Unreal Engine 5 revealed! Real-Time Prototype Gameplay Demo Running On PS5

Is there a massive difference? Playstation's Dev Kit's have historically been quite similar / equal to production machines

Usually memory/cpu differences. Do you not remember Agnis Philosphy or whatever it was called. So called running in real time on a real PS4. We never got anything that looked as good as that.

It looks great. But until its running on a retail unit in front of someone im tempering my expectations.

Today was not a PS5 showcase, lol.

You guys are taking my wording there too literally. It's not a "showcase" as in an event, official 1st-party/3rd-party or whatever. It's a showcase more in terms of being something through a 3rd-party running on a platform holder's hardware, so while it's showing off the engine and software capabilities, it's ALSO, incidentally, showing off the PS5 hardware.

Hence, "a" PS5 showcase.

That PS3 demo from post #21 destroyed my hype.

If what dudes were saying about "just grab high resolution models and let engine do things for you" is close to truth, I could imagine indie games getting onto a new level.

Other than that, exclusive studios will surely beat it.

Epic explicitly said it will not be a game. It does look cool though, so I feel you.

Anyone downplaying this is fanboying, simple as that. Of course it doesnt mean we will get actual games that look like this, we have seen thess Unreal Engine tech demo's before. I hope we do get games like this though, although how expensive and time consuming making a game that looks like this, well there wont be many of them, thats for sure.

Keep in mind people this is Unreal 5, it will run the same tech on Xbox. Also note, that there aren't many first party studios that sony owns that are using unreal.

On the flip side most of MS first party are using unreal engine. Imagine gears of war with film quality assets.

HOOOOOLY!!! This is out of this world, I haven't been expecting anything close to this. I'm officially hyped! 10 TF redeemed! I just hope real games will look like this. This is CG movie level. Although I'm sure VFXVeteran VFXVeteran will join us and tell us that it is lightyears away from that and it looks bad and PCs from 10 years ago can do better :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Two different marketing strategies.

Option A - Talk, talk, talk, build hype, promise the world, talk, talk..... show real games from third parties

Option B - Sit patiently. Then, when no one is expecting it, SHOW the world, drop the mic and walk away....... show a game engine tech demo, which is not a good representation of actual games, and the game engine is also on PC and SeX.
Fixed.
Anyway it is running 1440p/30
I guess Series X will run 1600p/30
And a RTX3080Ti 4K/60
It was running at 1440p? Yikes. I tihnk even most PS4 Pro games run games at higher res.

Even in this thread people are console warring, apparantly clueless to the fact that both consoles will be running this demo at similar fidelity, give or take.

The best GPU will run this same demo looking the best. So like always PC>XBox Series X>PS5>XBox One X>PS4 Pro>PS4>Xbox One. yet some folks will never accept that reality.

Also I have no clue if Unreal 5 will be available on current gen consoles. I only listed them all to prove the overall point.

Some people are gonna eat a lot of SSD crow...

You need a lot of bandwidth to feed something like this on the fly.

Awesome awesome awesome. No doubt in a complete game, part of the performance is going into AI, more animations, physics, sounds, effects and all that, but this seems to show more like the extreme version of what is possible just in the geometry/lightning aspect of the engine/console.

No actual games will look like this, but it shows up to what can be done in real time. It was goddamn fantastic, especially:
-The part where they show just the triangles. Brutal stuff.
-The room with 500 statues.
-And the outside...When I saw that..."Are they gonna show it moving through the terrain reallly fast ???" And they did.

Some cons:
-the feet were not totally touching the floor.
-The scarf and the ponytail were floating as well.
-The cockroaches showed NO shadows.
-The birds had no shadows cast on the floor as well.
-That puddle of water dynamic wave thing was reeeaaaallly bad looking.
-The framerate or the animation rate for the birds and the bats seemed weird, kind jumpy or low framerate.

All in all, veeeeery impressed. I think they are going the right way with breaking with unreal engine 4 and do something from the ground up just for next gen.

are in a big trouble
Fuck I'm at work I'm not watching this on my crappy small phone screen. Can't wait to see it when I get back

And people tend to forget that this is a Tech Demo, games won't look like this at launch... it would be surprising if they'll look like this at all. Nothing looked like the UE4 tech demo from back then and that demo still does things we've not seen in games to this day (like liquid physics for example)

I told you guys again and again.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF PLAYSTATION.

Now we wait for Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule and Sony Santa Montica to get their hands on this tech.

Dude. Sony did not create the technical demo. Epic did. Today had nothing to do with Sony outside of the obvious marketing agreement. This same level of graphics is possible on next gen Xbox and next gen PC GPU's.

Of course it will. PCs will also need the SSD speeds and I/O setups similar to the next-gen consoles. He clearly said the Nanite Tech will only run on next-gen consoles and high end PCs. Mid-rage, etc., will have downscaled assets from their portfolio.
PC gaming will get there. Remember that this Tech isnt out until 2021.

platform: xbox 360 and ps3

and now compare this demo to real gameplay from PS3/xbox 360 unreal engine games lol

That demo was originally running on 3 x GTX 580s, and then they replaced it with a GTX 680. For comparison, that's about as fast as the GPU in a PS4 Pro. So far in advance of Xbox 360/PS3 level hardware.

And this generation I think we arguably matched or exceeded this level of graphical fidelity eg:

No,
Exactly.

The problem with game engine videos is that they always look awesome in canned videos with nothing going on. Just like the Unreal 3 2011 Samaritan, there's a possibility there's no games using Unreal 5 having great looking rocks like this video for 10 years.

Just remember gamers..... ND showed a Twitter clip of UC 4 at 1080p/60 fps (that vid of Drake stumbling and falling on his face from I think 2014 or 2015). The real game not only didn't look as good (textures/lighting), but also the fps was reduced to 30.

Easy to do great looking short in-game engine scenes.

Not easy to make a whole game looking like a short demo.
No, those rocks will be there. Xbox Game Studios are rumored to be making heavy use of Unreal Engine and photogrammetry. Which this is.

i think its reasonable to expect this. this isnt THAT far from something like Battlefront 2 single player and its a narrow corridor environment like a ND game

Gameplay demos / trailers for TLoU2 and Ghost of Tsushima seem better than that

And Dev machines are not substantially different. You often have more ram, for example, to run debugging, but you need a similar to retail machine. You can't program for a high end PC and then expect the same performance on a middle grade one.

the main question people should ask themselves: why it was not shown on PC?
But the answer is pretty simple, a new console generation is coming up and having the engine tied to the generational shift is beneficial to marketing the engine; also console vendors might be interested in having their system tied to early demonstrations of tech demos. This could absolutely run on a PC (and naturally XSX, because it is basically a slightly stronger PS5), but PC does not carry the "next gen" flair.

The texture detail, geometry, draw distance, and zero terrain LOD or pop-in is by far ahead of current Frostbite. But Frostbite will most definitely benefit from those shortcomings with these SSDs and I feel in the right hands, we will see games that look like this. Your God of War's, Uncharted's, Tomb Raider's, Gears of War, etc..

Daaaamn, that looks great! It's still not in game footage of an actual game, since demos like this don't need to worry about AI and can be optimized for presentation, but it's still closer to what I want to see than what was in the Xbox presentation.

Both consoles will be able to benefit from UE5, though, so that's good. The talk about the ease of development sounded awesome. Get this in Squeenix's hands ASAP lol.

I got serious Final Fantasy 7 Remake vibes when she squeezed through that narrow passage. "I thought we didn't have loading screens anymore?"

Marketing Agreement. It was a marketing agreement. Sony did not even create the tech demo so far as anyone is aware.
tbh after the demo ended it was only about how amazing the ps5 was for a good 10 minutes.
seemed weird for a third party engine demo. then they started to slowly crawl back

Uh. I didn't need evidence to know that Microsoft did not mention PS5 in their 3rd party games to know there was a marketing agreement there either. C'mon. You're trying to start an absolutely ridiculous debate here.

You're the one with the conspiracy theories buddy not me I asked for proof of your claims and you gave me nothing , better to stick to the topic of the thread instead of throwing baseless claims around .
