LTTP: Uncharted 4

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
The story is good, Henry Avery is a big pirate name, Libertailia, and Madagascar were the right choices in terms of picking a location and I believe it offers the best opportunities for platforming (Jungle, grappling hook etc.) this is maybe my favorite Uncharted game. We hear all the time how great Uncharted 2 is and yes that game is unbelievable but Uncharted 4 is a masterpiece.

Friendly reminder this was one of the best games of 2016
Uncharted-4-metacritic.jpg

The ending was bittersweet and was a HUGE risk for Naughty Dog, there's a little bit of anxiety of where the series is going. Introducing Drake's daughter has been a huge success in some crowds and could change the trajectory of the franchise for years to come.

What did GAF think of the game?

I have to replay it, the first time I played UC 3 I wasn't too sure about it... but my copy is at my nephew's place... far away, I'm not evey allowed to go and retrieve it :-/

Loved it. I need to get back to my crushing play through. I got up to ch 10 than stopped after hitting a wall.

Amazing game. Saw some YouTube videos of it recently. The graphics and destructible items in some levels looks like it could be a next gen PS5 game. It’s actually quite staggering. Look at the shootout in the market scene. So much going on. This is what I expect all games next gen to strive for.

IMO its the best in series.
Too many "close call" scripts tough. Aspecially in final chapters nearly every so gle jump has one xD

I'm replaying all of them right now. Uncharted 4 is the worst. People "love" it because it clings in nostalgia of the other 3 and it looks beautiful.

The series was about action. It was like being in an Indiana Jones movie. However, the 4th one became just like a museum showcase. It doesn't have huge set pieces like Uncharted 2 or 3. The biggest one was the Jeep chase, and that was like Uncharted 1 level of set piece.

The retcon of Drake's brother was a huge mistake. Parts of the game seems like you are playing the sims.

The game should have been the biggest action game ever. It should have gone with huge bang! Although the ending made sense and was satisfying, the entire game felt like a slug compared to the other three.

Like I said, people like if because it looks pretty. They compare the mechanics and like it, but that's obvious because the mechanics evolve. It's like playing GOW 1 after GOW 3. The entire story and characters suck.

Elena became a jealous bitch. Drake would never abandon Elena or lie to her for his just-met-brother.

Is it an enjoyable game? Yes! but it''s the worst in the franchise, including the one from PS Vita.

U2 > U1 > U3 > UPSV > U4

I fucking hated Uncharted 4.
Story that has 5 1st acts.
Trailers that spoiled the entire game
Dialog is boring n humorless.
Characters are tired n Nate & Elena became just the worst couple
OST was God awful
Gameplay... There seem to be one... Can't say for sure.
THE only cool part of the game was spoiled in it's entirety on E3.

Visuals were the only upside
Also it was decently lengthy n that bout it

IMHO of course

I actually wouldn't count it as a positive. Something tells me if the game was a few hours shorter, I would probably call it a decent time waster, but its length is partially the reason why it is so badly structured and paced.

Narratively it’s bloated and some of the levels are under designed gameplay wise but I am softening a bit about it over time. For me the ideal narrative is more like the first game but it is good for what it is.

I used to be in the camp of UC2>>>>Everything but having recently played back through it via the collection I have to say UC4 is better in every way.

You seem too grumpy about it... but you have a point.

I am playing through the first game at the moment and the controls are awful. There isn’t much exploring either. I prefer the tomb raider reboot to this to be honest. I am going to play through them all and at the moment I am on chapter 12 on the first one

After replaying Uncharted 2 over the last days I have to say it's not my favourite Uncharted game anymore.
My memories and nostalgia clouded the truth. The game was awesome when it released, but today it feels pretty clunky and off somehow.
Also i didnt quiet remember the story and felt like wtf while replaying - and not the good wtf. It's just wierd.

So my my updated list from fun game to feels like work game

Uncharted Lost Legacy
Uncharted 4 (although i didn't like it at first, restarted it 2 years later again, had to push myself to finish it and somehow, it still has an impact on me.)
Uncharted Golden Abyss
Uncharted 3
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 1

Uncharted 2 and LL > Every other Uncharted game.

Uncharted 4 has too few shooting sections and only one real set piece, with too much obnoxious climbing/slow walking/talking sections. Fuck Druckmann, put the Lost Legacy guys incharge.

I was less so... But unlike in previous post
My replay of U2 last year was just a blast.
Tibet village section is just phenomenal
And that turned my grumpiness towards U4 to 11.
And it seem like things ll get worse with TlOU2, although I am still open minded bout it

One set piece?? 😂 You didn't play it then

I enjoyed my first playthrough and it still looks really nice but to me it wasn't nearly as good as U2.
I think the pacing was overall worse and it could have used some more action and less walking and talking or slow scripted sequences. The large areas in particular felt wasted, you get to Madagastcar and at first the large size of the map seems amazing, but then you quickly realize there's pretty much nothing to do or find in there besides some useless collectables.

The setpiece moments also felt scaled back. The jeep chase was pretty much the only good one, there's some other moments that look great but they are so scripted that they feel like a step back compared to what Uncharted 2 was doing 2009. Escaping from the chopper on the rooftops, the whole truck chase sequence or the train sequence were all great because they looked amazing and had the right amount of scripted events, but you as a player still felt like an active part in all of them. Aside from the Jeep chase, every other set piece in Uc4 just felt like "the player hardly does anything but we'll make everything around him look really cool"

I liked visuals and the way characters interacted.
I was mildly annoyed by Nadine and how Drake was "guilty" of helping his brother.

For me UC series is mostly about Drake. N. Duckman can fuck off if UC goes full Sarkisijan the way TLOU2 went.

I tried it when it was free on ps+. Tried liking it but couldnt. The controls were really sluggish and it felt like stearing a mudman through jello the entire time.
I wanted to like it cuz I like adventure games, the Tomb Raider games have much better controls so I'll stick to them because of that.

Can't really understand how people like the second one better, i always thought the PS3 trilogy were very mediocre cover shooter games, but the 4th one (probably because of Druckmann's more creative control) really achieved something different, every aspect of the game was on a whole other level compared to its predecessors, but the biggest jump in quality aside from tech was the writing, it was closer to TLoU than Uncharted 1-3.

Uncharted 2 is like a 4/10 game while Uncharted 4 is one of the best games of all time.

Stop tempting me into rebuying UC4 on digital. It’s like 3 weeks till TLOU2. I can make it!

I can't stand it to be honest. It's one of the most deliberately boring games I've ever played. At least they redeemed themselves with Lost Legacy.

from what people are saying here I look forward to playing U2
Pretty much the only "cinematic" game that gives you more control, choice n gameplay as it goes on despite also increasing the amount of scripted "cinematic" moments.
THE section where u need to destroy a tank in Tibet is Naughty Dog on Top of their game.

are the controls better than the first? I am finding the controls really bad tbh compared with tomb raider. sections were it changes to a fixed camera angle just really off putting to

People argue what's its place within UC franchise, whether it's the best or worst entry, or something in the middle, but looking from a different perspective, UC4 is Sony's best shooter for this generation. Hopefully more shooters will come to PS5 instead of melee-based titles over and over again.

I thought it was okay overall. Like a 7/10. The tech and attention to detail was impressive, cutscenes were mostly nice, and a couple of the more open levels were cool to explore. Otherwise nothing really special. I had some fun with the multiplayer too.

Still though, it shits all over tomb raider and the like, those are really mediocre.

I did not played PS4 version of U1 so I can't tell.
Originally there was huge jump in quality between U1 n U2. Pretty much every aspect was dramatically improved.
U1 was a product of a very troubled production. There are rumors that they had to put much of it together in the last 6 month of development.
U2 is definitely more wooden then U4 though

I've recently replayed all these (except Drake's fortune). Thoughts on ranking:

Lost Legacy: The linear sections and more open sections were balanced at a much more pleasing pace, intriguing and solid puzzles, benefit of all the previous combat designs. The perfect blend of all the other title highs, and a better note to go out on rather than 4 I felt.
Uncharted 2: Second best paced (the part with Shambala just kept going and going. Really weighed down the last 4 or so chapters). Aside from that, it was nigh on perfect. Nepal (judged alone) is the series high point I think. The enemy wave design was egregious, beyond where you pick the story up again at the trainwreck.
Uncharted 4: Most technically engaging combat. Dragged out a story that wasn't worth the investment. Most grand and beautiful landscapes/environments. Fell back into Uncharted 2 'waves' at times. It tried to make too many scenes thought provoking and contemplative. When the most thought provoking points were fake memories and using Sam as a kind of deus ex machina. Best puzzles in the series. One of the few ND games where the storytelling intruded on the story progression.
Uncharted 3: Best paced, changes to encounter design and shooting were awful. Some good ideas that felt wrapped round the technical showcases (e.g. pirates/shipyard/cruise liner).
Uncharted 1: Where it all began. Looks very dated. Small focus/scope, so the pacing and the limited scope of the adventure worked well together. I always felt this was B/A-Tier when I first played it. And while I remember it fondly as the starting point, it's a product of its time and doesn't endure as well as the others. It's very linear in its focus and formula whereas what came afterwards was a little more creative.

Worst of the series for mine. Still love the story of the original game best. This game was just too long and boring. The brother being introduced was just crap. The 3 originals on PS3 were fantastic games. This one looks stunning yet is a hollow retread of the first 3 games.
In my opinion Amy Hennig was a massive loss. I would’ve loved to have seen her version of Uncharted 4.

If they cut 60% of the climbing out, it would be a much better game.
One of the great things in U2 is how well designers understood limitations of their climbing system.
They never make u climb for more then couple minutes at a time and more often then not it directed in a way that camera exposing u to a new elements of the map, puzzle mechanism or some background action

I feel like the Tomb Raider reboots have overtaken Uncharted in the Uncharted genre
from what I payed so far in the first one I would say the same, there seems a bit to much gun play rather than exploring. from what people are saying is the second is way better so I look forward to seeing if there is more exploring. I honestly thought it would be more exploring and open world segments like tomb raider but so far what I play its very corridor like where you can't stray much from the path intended. I think the game is ok so far but not as good as was made out at the time
