I would probably have liked RDR more if I had had a 360.. likewise, Skyrim, BioShock, and Orange Box all suffered for being on the PS3 for me.

Ironic, considering there are no 360-exclusives on this list.

GTA4 I guess? Though I don't like any of the open world games: GTA, Batman, Red Dead. Just not my cup of tea. And I'm seriously shocked that Twilight Princess is up there. I had no clue it reviewed so well (not really sure why either).

Solidly the GTA's for essentially being dicking around simulators that Saint's Row does better. Third place goes to Skyrim for having abysmal writing.

Lots of these games are overrated in my eyes.

Batman: Arkham City - I got bored pretty quickly. Never finished.
Bioshock - Was super pumped about this game and it did not disappoint!
Grand Theft Auto 4 - Hated it almost from the get go.
Grand Theft Auto 5 - Better than IV, but still got bored. I've just never "got" this series.
The Last of Us - Enjoyed what I played, but never finished. Will buy again on PS4 and finish it then.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Played the crap out of it for about a week and then just stopped. Plan on playing it again SOMEDAY.
LittleBigPlanet - Very charming, but couldn't hold my attention. Part 2 was a little more robust, but still couldn't get into it.
Mass Effect 2 - Never finished the first one, but really enjoyed part 2 even though I didn't have a save file to carry over. Still have Part 3 sitting unopened on the shelf.
The Orange Box - Played through Portal and HATED it. It's still on my shelf to come back to for Half Life 2 someday.
Portal 2 - Only game on the list I haven't played. Never will. See "The Orange Box" entry.
Red Dead Redemption - Same as GTA. Just can't get into it.
Skyrim - Put about 50 hours into it, but just got burnt out. The only Elder Scrolls game that's held my attention past the first couple of hours.
Super Mario Galaxy - Loved it!
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Haven't finished. Waiting for the right time. I tried playing it right after the first one. Too much Mario.
Uncharted 2 - The only one in the series I've played and I loved it! Someday I'll get around to playing 3.

I don't know why I felt the need to type all of that out. Looking over it, I guess I just don't like the Rockstar style.

Thought it would be interesting to see how these games fared in their respective GAF game of the year threads (ordered highest to lowest):

1 - The Last of Us (2013)
1 - Portal 2 (2011)
1 - Mass Effect 2 (2010)
1 - Uncharted 2 (2009)
1 - Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
1 - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)
2 - Skyrim (2011)
2 - Red Dead Redemption (2010)
2 - LittleBigPlanet (2008)
2 - The Orange Box (2007)
3 - Grand Theft Auto 5 (2013)
3 - Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)
3 - Bioshock (2007)
6 - Grand Theft Auto 4 (2008)
7 - Batman: Arkham City (2011)

The clear outliers are GTA4 and Arkham City

Mass Effect 2 is a game? I sat through 30+ minutes of shitty cutscenes and turned it off. Figured it was an interactive movie.

I'd put LBP and Bioshock up there. I think they were well made, just not my cup of tea.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Portal 2
The Orange Box
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mass Effect 2
Skyrim
Uncharted 2
Bioshock
Super Mario Galaxy
Batman: Arkham City
The Last of Us
Red Dead Redemption
LittleBigPlanet
Tie - Grand Theft Auto 4 - Grand Theft Auto 5

I never got into SMG, even though I loved the second. GTA isn't my thing. RDR and TLoU are good but a little more serious than I prefer. The Portal games always kept me mostly happy. LittleBigPlanet is interesting, but needed better feeling physics/mechanics for the player. UC2 and Bioshock were solid. Most of the others I really liked, but found disappointing in some ways compared to previous games in those series.

Edit: to clarify, that's ranked from favorite to least favorite.

Worst on that list of what I have played is GTA IV and it isn't even close. Second most disappointed game of the generation for me (Resistance 2 is the first). Best game on that list is Orange Box.

Definitely Bioshock, super cool world and atmosphere and some awesome set pieces but the combat gameplay and AI were just clunky and un-fun.

Fighting enemies in that game reminded me of playing vs bots in unreal tournament, it felt like work.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Batman: Arkham City - ★★★ - A good action game that captures the Batman-essence. Not as impressive as Asylum.
Bioshock - ★★★★½ - One of the best games last gen. Suffers from an overly long and badly paced third act.
Grand Theft Auto 4 - ★★★½ - I love the city. Don't care too much about the characters and story. The multiplayer is awesome with friends.
Grand Theft Auto 5 - ★★★★½ - The best GTA-game to date. Does just about everything right. Looking forward to the PS4/PC-version.
The Last of Us - ★★★★ - Really good action game that gets the pacing right. Great character development and a sign of great things to come, both from Naughty Dog and the market as a whole.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - ★★★ - A good but utterly boring Zelda-game.
LittleBigPlanet - ★★★★ - The cutest and brightest game in a long while when it was released. The building tools are great and the community it created is great too.
Mass Effect 2 - ★★★½ - A more focused but ultimatly a more shallow experience than the genius first game.
The Orange Box - ★★★★★ - Portal and Team Fortress 2? And some Half-Life?
Portal 2 - ★★★★ - A really good sequel. The story is great. The production values are excellent but the experiences is not as good as the genius first game.
Red Dead Redemption - ★★★★½ - Awesome game. Completly 100%:ed it twice. One of the few games I hope get a re-master for next gen.
Skyrim - ★★★★½ - I'm a recovering addict. I'd rather not return because I'll just spend another 200 hours on it.
Super Mario Galaxy - Haven't played.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Haven't played.
Uncharted 2 - ★★★½ - Really solid action game. Forgets some parts of what made the first game such fun to play and its steps lead right up to The Last of Us.

So, in general a few I agree with and a few I really don't. But on the whole they're all good games and it's up to personal preference in the end.

I haven't played GTA5, so that might be up there, but GTA4.

I get the appeal of open world games, but I don't see the appeal in the interactions with them that GTA (or other games like Saints Row) allow.

Probably an unpopular opinion but The Orange Box, in current times it's hot garbage and I tried to get into those games two distinct times since purchasing it. Like a decade ago those games were enjoyable but now I just hated them and it was a chore to even boot them and try to play.

Apparently I missed all the gems of last gen, except for Bioshock and Mass Effect 2. FWIW, I thought Bioshock deserved a 95+. Mass Effect 2; not so much, but it was still a very good game.

As for the rest of the listed, I bought and sold GTA4 without ever playing it, so I suppose I'd have to go for that (why? because of all the review controversy; that crap was enough for me to hate on it).

I really want to try Skyrim some day, but I really hated Morrowind and its scaling difficulty bullshit so.. I don't know.

LBP is the easy choice but IMO The Last of Us didn't really get a lot of scrutiny for what in my eyes are quite a few shortcomings:

It's the classic naughty dog gameplay loop: Combat set piece followed by mild environment puzzling all with a side companion. Repeat.

This doesn't mean it's inherently bad, but in the case of the Last of Us the entire package doesn't stand out. The combat is okay not good and the encounters become repetitive quickly. The world building is very derivative of pretty much any other zombie ridden post apocalyptia you've ever seen. The environmental puzzles consist of moving ladders, boxes, dumpsters etc...so what's her face can get over something and then unlock a door. I didn't like the characters very much although it is remarkably well voiced throughout and the dialogue felt genuine. The sum of my time with it wasn't enjoyable and it never really blew my hair back. It has this "oh look how brutal this is, how daring" attitude and I never fully appreciated why others found that to be so new and fresh. Needless to say I find the GOAT opinions towards it puzzling.

Is 'That Pure Potato'
Batman: Arkham City and Uncharted 2 both got 95+?

Wow, I disliked both of them. Then again I was pretty young and didn't play games much at the time. Maybe I should check them out again to see if I was just being a whiny kid.

I only played the following. I know enough about most of the others to know I wouldn't like them, with the exception of Mario Galaxy 2.

Batman: Arkham City
Bioshock
The Last of Us
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
LittleBigPlanet
Mass Effect 2
Portal 2
Red Dead Redemption
Skyrim
Super Mario Galaxy
Uncharted 2

Out of those, my least favorite is probably Skyrim. I think Bethesda games are incredibly overrated. I don't find their janky characters, endless bugs and copy/pasted environments charming as others claim to.

I enjoyed Fallout 3 and Skyrim well enough, but they aren't on the level as most of those other games.

Edit: I didn't notice this was a necro bump. Oh well.

I’ve just started playing through GTA4 having never completed it when it released. It’s not aged well and I’m struggling to get into it tbh. May have to drop it considering how big my backlog is.

Least favorite: easy pick, Zelda Wii by miles (i hated everything, my eyes kept rolling non stop at any new situation, but they manage to do even worse in the sequel.). The HD remaster on WiiU at 30FPS was laughable. BOTW, despite all its flaws, is what the Zelda franchise needed.

Somehow Galaxy 2 (just played it after finishing the 1st one again and it was a bad idea). Yeah, the game is great.

GTA4 was okey. GTA3 was not great too. People should take them as the fondation for better games. GTA4 DLC were really good. It needs a proper remaster.

Loved LBP, but it clearly is a flawed game. The Last of Us is 7/10 at best. Actually, it would be easier to name the games that deserve the score - RDR and Skyrim, two games that I spent way too much time on because they were so freaking good experiences. Bioshock and ME2 come close.

Probably galaxy 1 and 2 for me. The "2nd player" feature got my hopes up and shattered thinking I'd have a friend running around with. The controls kind of sucked when running around on the opposite side of a planet trying to get up somewhere and flipping the opposite direction or missing the platform cause it's hard to gauge how far to jump or just accidentally sliding off. Trying to get a coin by climbing a try and jumping off as far as you can was a pro gamer move as you would constantly be missing it by a degree left or right. Using the Wii mote and motion controls wasn't great either.

LittleBigPlanet is super boring. I tried and tried with the series but it just never clicked for me

Red Dead Redemption

I played it for 5 hours and was bored to tears. I hated the forced accents and eye-rolling dialogue and returned it to Blockbuster. I'm just not a fan of westerns and easily passed on RDR2. I know sites like WhatCulture never shut up about it, but I'll prob never play it. I'm cool with that.

Batman: Arkham City
Grand Theft Auto 4
Grand Theft Auto 5
LittleBigPlanet
Skyrim

some because I have not played them, some because while they're good games they're just not for me.

GTA 4. Bailed on it after 20 some hours. Did the same with 3. Series just isn’t my cup of tea. Haven’t played 5 and liked most of the others in the poll.

I just recently finished up Uncharted 1 (thought it was average) and went on to start 2, excited since what I had read suggested it's the best one.

It's trash. I got to chapter 7 and deleted it. I've no idea what people see in the Uncharted series. It's a corridor runner with poor shooting mechanics and an enemy wave generator. Really boring to me.
