[DF] The Last of Us Part 2: PS4 vs PS4 Pro Comparison + Performance Testing + Initial Thoughts

The Last of Us Part 2 is less than a week away from launch. While embargo restrictions severely limit us and make our usual tech deep dives impossible, we can at least tell you how the PS4 and Pro versions compare, run some performance tests and offer up some initial thoughts about the whole game. NOTE: This video conforms to Sony's review guidelines with regards spoilers and we do not discuss story points.

■Native 1440p / 30fps on PS4 Pro + TAA.
■Native 1080p / 30fps locked.
■A few rare drops to 27fps on PS4 Pro only (swim passages).
■In general the famerate is more solid on PS4 than on PS4 Pro.
■Good IQ on both versions.

They can’t talk about much for this one, next week will be the full tech showcase. John really likes the game, 1080/1440 so the usual ps4/pro setup, PS4 preformance seems very very solid, and pro is also really good but a touch worse, particularly when there’s water involved, but still worlds ahead of the first game.

and they said on pro it doesnt affect like gamplay or movements or whatever, its just numbers that i dont care about for at all. and when game will be released i will be playing it day one , not watching some video about it . it was nice to watch as i didint saw some scenes yet .
on PS5 expect simple patch nothing more at launch, maybe later. i didint had any problems to play original TLOU on PS3, those drops wasnt bothering me at all.

but as they said maybe more important would be new ray tracing stuff or textures , even better textures could be too,. i would go for that option still on 30fps .

Almost rock solid 1440p30 on PS4Pro means a native 4k60 is happening on PS5. Wicked.

The dips on PS4Pro imply that the game is GPU limited. Good thing the PS5's GPU is like 3x faster than the PS4Pro's.
I guess you are right. The new Ratchet Game has all the graphical bells and whistles of next gen and runs at 4k30.

With that in mind, 4k60 should be achievable for Naughty Dog if they choose to.

im missing those options that TR gave us for PS4 Pro. why its not popular anymore ? Pro version on 1080p 30fps but with upgraded visuals , would it be so hard and will we get that on PS5 .

When I first started watching DF I always felt like Richard was the most experienced of the bunch, a sort of leader. But this gen John has came forward much more and often showed signs of leadership.
And while I think John has been showing great leadership. I still think Richard Leadbetter

Remember in UC4 how they implemented a dialogue mechanic that paused the dialogue if you broke off to search and then resumed when you rejoined your ally? I wonder if that's in TLOU2?

Naughty Dog released ps3 remasters of their catalogue on PS4 to get practice on the new gen hardware. It’s possible they will upgrade this game with quite a lot to garner experience for their next title exclusive to PS5.

Damn man the game looks incredible for a 7 year old machine. NG are wizards.
What about it being 7 years old makes it impressive? RDR2 looks every bit as good and came out almost 2 years ago. Infamous SS, Ryse, Quantum Break, KZF, Crysis 3 or AC:Unity all look top-tier to this day.

I feel the graphics haven’t moved much since the start of the gen. We had top-looking games out of the gate.

TLOU2 isn’t any more impressive than all those amazing games. It’s up there with them.

For me the message is loud and clear here -> They ain't gonna sacrifice the 1440p (and all the bells and whistles) of the PS4Pro version just to ameliorate a couple of frame dips here and there.
They're insignificant and scarce after all. And when compared to the Last of Us Part 1 of PS3, the PS4Pro version of LoU2 is by a large margin better in terms of frame-rate.

Therefore, I do hope that they'll do a Last of Us Part Us Part II Remastered for PS5, with 60fps, native 4K, maybe some ambitious ray-tracing here and there, Global Illumination and whatnot.
They have to do it. It's the GOTY we're talking about here. It needs next-gen cherishing and premium treatment.

Nah we must not be seeing the same game. This is going to take the graphical crown. In motion in high rez videos this shit looks better than all of those. Naughty Dog animations are king.

Don’t think so. RDR2 is still unbeaten.

Nah thts your opinion and it's cool. Given RDR 2 shortcomings in movement in gameplay it Doesnt even hold the benchmark for me, Horizon does and Uncharted but to each their own.

TLOU 2 on another level though.

It’s all opinions. I don’t think any of those games is head and shoulders above the rest hence my comment of not being impressed by it being on 7 year old hardware. The trashcan known has the X1 has lookers such as Quantum Break on it that still looks amazing to this day especially on PC.

ND never did this in any of their actual PS4 games for some reason, this is just plain annoying, I'd take the option of an unstable unlocked framerate like in God of War over locked 30fps any day of the week.

I’m shook a 1.8 TF machine can do all that natively at 1080p.
I cannot imagine what a 10 TF machine w a better memory option and way better graphics card is going to do.

Maybe the higher quality/rez SSR water on the PRO is causing the framedrops. Still about 98% locked on PRO it would seem. Hopefully the day 1 patch addresses that...I'm pretty sure Naughty is aware.....

I only have my PS4 with me. I left my PS4 Pros in NY. So im happy the PS4 is kicking this game great. Impressive.

Naughty Dog on PS5.. oh boy.

I've pre-ordered the game via the PlayStation Store and am really looking forward to it. However, after playing The Last of Us Remastered on the PS4 Pro at 60 frames per second, I think that I'm going to be bothered by the slower frame rate of the sequel. Will the Pro at least be able to run the game at 60 frames per second in 1080p?

Well no. Devs didint made that option, all hope for ps5 patch only.

I wonder if the ps5 is powerful enough to run this at 4k60. That’s a lot of extra pixels to push.

Difficult to say. 2x tflops, and an RDNA 2 package which amplifies the tflops per watt...

If I had to guess, I'd say PS5 will do 60fps, but remain at 2K res because ultimately it's a port. I think if they take the "easy option" and go 4k res it'll be at 30fps... (bumping res doesn't change gameplay timing - that's why I say res is the "easy option").

But it will be interesting to see - if they pull off 4k/60 then I guess for the first time in history we'd have a game of 2 gens!

I love the fact that Base PS4 still performs so excellently.
1080p@30fps - stable!

Sony really did hold their promise.
