Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

The “technology” behind Quixel Megascans is nothing at all to do with Nanite virtualised micro-polygon geometry.
Megascans are assets you can use in your game or other production. That they are included or recommended as part of the Unreal Engine developer kit doesn’t mean that’s all Nanite is, or it is at all the same thing.
“1440P” isn’t a texture size, either. Nor is a 4K texture the same as a 4K frame buffer.

Load of gibberish.

We have no idea how much IO latency/bandwidth was required to demonstrate the UE5 demo.

All we know is that it was a collaboration between Epic and Sony, the result of which seems to be Sony selecting the speed they did for PS5, and Sweeney saying what we saw was only possible thanks to the work Sony did on IO.

We also know and have been told that not only is UE5 designed to scale down to mobile devices, but that Nanite itself is also tuneable.

Lumen in the Land of Nanite may very well only be possible on PS5 in the manner it was presented, just as Ratchet & Clank is only possible on PS5 in the manner it was presented in the trailer.

That doesn’t mean UE5 or Nanite as a useful technology only works on PS5. We’ve been told that’s scalable across systems with NVMe drives. How many assets are being loaded at once and the quality of the source assets being potentially limiting factors, and how many pixels per triangle being a scalable parameter.

If Lumen in the Land of Nanite was designed to really stretch the IO capabilities of the PS5 at the level of quality demonstrated then it will only be possible on it. That’s not a contentious or controversial point.

If it was only using something like a quarter of its capability then maybe it’s possible to render as shown on almost anything with a decent NVMe drive. If this is the case then it’s a mystery as to why Sony would spend so much money and die space on what they have done if it’s all unnecessary. That implication I do find a bit nonsensical.

But this has already been discussed to death entire chapters ago.

Lord of the Rings Gollum Environments Aren’t Chopped Up Thanks to PS5 SSD

Lord of the Rings Gollum developer Deadalic has spoked in praise about the PS5 SSD, saying that Sony’s next-gen technology helps the studio keep the expansive environment intact. Designers of the open-world game won’t have to chop up their environments with loading corridors. PS5’s SSD will be put to work.

Something got chopped up, judging by what was released so far. Woof.
Also Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem thanks for the gold last month brother but MAN am I glad the auto scroll nightmare is over🤣

128*36*2.0Ghz = 9.2TF
128*36*2.17Ghz= 9.99TF
What are the chances it never goes below 2.18Ghz ??

And just remember to round down to 9TF on that 2.17GHz clock rate! Sheesh, some people (the guy who posted on twitter)!

I can see why some people are criticizing the whole TFLOP rating, and there is some truth in it, but it's really about work load, and work load varies greatly from scene to scene.

If you need the 10.28 TFLOP rating, then it's there to be reached. Of course, if the work load is not that great, like a selection screen for example, you down clock, as no point in running at maximum clocks if it's not needed. This save power which generates less heat and which also saves electricity.

The important thing is throttling, meaning that the chip has to be down clocked in order to deal with too high temperatures. This is a common occurrence on laptops, with their deficient heat sinks and fans.

Sony is in a position to do extensive testing of the max clock rate, with their current heat sink/fan setup, and of course it's a lot more substantial than what any laptop would have.

Mark Cerny clearly stated that they found a "sweet spot" for the PS5 chipset in order to maintain the maximum clocks.

Sony knows, that if a game suffers throttling, testers like Digital Foundry will be all over it, and will generate a ton of negative PR for the console.

We have to wait and see, but I have full confidence in what Mark Cerny said, that this will not be a problem.

Also the large size of the PS5, hints at a large cooling solution. If that was not the case, the console would be smaller.

Another important issue is fan noise. Mark Cerny mentioned this in his talk also, indicating the high fan noise of the PS4 Pro in certain circumstances that involved high vertex calculations. It seems they have resolved this, or he would not have mentioned it.

My scrolling is fixed, yay !

Better just to fill a couple of bottles and give it to a cop that pulls you over.

PS5’s clocks vary by temperature as much as XSX’s do. That is to say they do not at all.

They only vary based on power consumption, and intense gameplay moments aren’t as power hungry as a low triangle map screen with no frame rate limit.

A lot’s riding on this month’s Xbox games showing, and it can end up being an amazing show or a massive disappointment (hoping for the former). But personally, I think they’ll knock it out of the park, we’ll see what happens. I’m really interested in seeing what IP The Initiative has been working on, that and Obsidian’s unannounced AAA RPG have really peaked my interest.

I've seen people comment this guy about getting some dates right. He's claiming that PS5 pre-orders will begin 7/13. I'm ready whenever it happens.

Although it is possible for Sony to drop the price first (after all, someone has to go first), I find it very difficult for they to do so knowing that there will be a Microsoft event this month and another one the following month to reveal Lockheart, unless that they are very confident with the price (450 ~ 400, which is the minimum in my view).

Sony playing Chess game ?

If that's happen it's because, Sony is confident at the price, but I don't belive it will surpass $500 for the Disc Version, but it will be a big surprise if they go with $400 on DE, and this will overshadow the xbox event a little I think , but I still belive in $450 for DE.

With the studios MS now has, they should be able to make many major announcements.

The problem is time - about 6 of MS's 15 studios have only been there for less than 2 years. But AAA games take around 5 years and more.

So if July is a list of games not coming until the gen is half over - 3 years away, MS are done. If they've rushed the games to get them out in 2021/early 22 and the games suffer as a result, they're done.

But I'm optimistic - I'm expecting that MS has done the improbable and produced AAA quality games that will be available within the 1st year to 18 months of Xsex launch - 2021. It should be megaton after megaton announcement - both 1st and 3rd party. I vaguely remember MS said they'd offer a AAA game every month.

Assuming they're announcing over the 21st to 27th, that is a ton of content to look forward to.

I can't see how MS can fail with what they've purchased these last year or two - it should just be 5 days or so of megatons... From the rumors and the statements from MS I'm fully expecting the greatest set of game reveals ever.

EDIT : Actually out of 15 studios, 9 were purchased or formed within the last 2 years...

Could be Sony are going to try and lock in preorders before MS get a chance to show anything.

Then again hardware preorders don't really lock anyone in these days.

It has been a bit irritating though.

As it stands my group of game buddies are all just going PS5 without even considering xbox. When I raised the possibility of going that way, no one knew enough about what xbox was doing so it was just waved off. That's the downside of not revealing stuff in a reasonable timescale.

But let's see what MS put out in July. They can still turn it around...

Roberto Serranò? He's as fake as they get I'm afraid :messenger_grinning_squinting: All he's been doing is talking vague nonsense that is so wrong he still can't link it to anything real after the fact.

Yep, but I belive would have a big impact if they announced a $400 console, and the focus would be take the MS media for a time.

Microsoft is falling in their own game, they were the first to announce a NextGen console, the first to announce hardware specs. And now Sony is showing things that they are confident about (games), and MS postpone events or Lockhart reveal. And that is what matters and made your friends only consider PlayStation.

Let's see and wait, I want to see the game made by Obsidian, how the next Forza stands against Gran Turismo 7 and if they will show a Perfect Dark game or Fable.

So 20 CUs or 18 CUs (2 deactivated)?

If 18, then it's maybe clocked to 1750MHz (1,75GHz), to get to the 4TF.

If 20, then it's maybe clocked to 1600MHz (1,6GHz).
I am assuming(speculating) that if it is real then as much of the system design will be shared with XsX as they can get.

Same CPU as XsX, the same 1825Mhz GPU clock, so ROPS & Compute will be higher than X1X, and still have 4.6TF RDNA2. The same 10 memory lanes/controllers, so 10GB (2.5GB OS, 7.5GB games ) unified at 560GB/s, so significantly faster memory than the X1X. Then the same features like Bcpack and the velocity Architecture, and a hybrid SSD using 100GB of ssd cache and 1TB mechanical hdd, along with support for XsX external SSD cards, so significantly faster IO, storage and acceleration features than the X1X.

If you say so....

Actually thinking about it, It's hard to Sony show the PS5 like that.
If they show the PS5 price will probably be in a event like The Future of Gaming, and they said "We have more to share about", and SpiderMan Miles Morales is a PS5 launch title (and big I think) and we don't have a gameplay, only Trailer/teaser.

God of War is a title lauched in 2018, so It's not hard to think in a teaser for the sequel even for a 2022/23 game. And would be a good market if they show something like or even better (because of Art Direction) than UE5.

I don't think Sony will take the Microsoft event media in this month with their another event, and they have Ghost Of Tsushima to make market.

Let's wait and see.

Wasnt it not that long ago that we were hearing the consoles would have severely cut down cpu cache?

Edit: I looked a bit more. I believe it came from the flute benchmark leak. I don’t pretend to understand it but people were saying it showed an 8 mb cpu cache.
I did a search. That flute test was a year old and there was nothing conclusive it was PS5 or XSX CPU , neither are 3.2ghz

18 or 20 CU dont need 560 GB/s is a waste of money. You must get the same GB/s Tflops /CU.

560GB/s / 52 CU = 10.77 GB/s/CU

XXX GB/s/20 CU = 10.77 GB/s/CU ; XXX = Bandwidth 217.6 GB/s.

XXX GB/s/18 CU = 10,77 GB/s/CU ; XXX = Bancwidth 193 GB/s.

With this more or less in mind we could try to think of ram configurations.

20 CU ------ 10 RDNA CU ------- 2 Shaders engines, 2 Memory controller but 10 gb o memory ....... maybe divided memory? 8 chip, 6 chips 1 GB + 2 chips 2 GB? With 8 chips the can use GDDR5 more cheap. 256 bits memory is enought for 20 CU maybe 192 bits?

There is a lot configuration.

Let the bets begin
