Ghost of Tsushima - Review Thread

I still can't understand how Sony green lit this. It's nice to see it review well, and Sucker Punch are a great studio, but now what? 5 years of development for a Samurai open world game that won't make it to top 3 goty, and has no clear path forward as a franchise.
Pirate Movies were dead before Pirates of the Caribbean released.

Would love to buy this now but my PS4 Pro is too noisy. Will wait to buy/play week 1 of PS5 launch along with TLOU2.
get a decent thermal paste and replace it, it isn't difficult, I did that with mine and it went from jet engine to normal.

I heard that the camera makes the game frustrating at times so maybe that’ll make it harder for you
I am 1 hour into the game now. Rotating the camera during battle is a little annoying when enemies move out of view, and i havnt found any option to lock on.
As for the difficult, i play on normal at the moment, and taking on enemies 1:1 is easy if you dont act cocky and rash, but in groups they can be quite overwhelming.
Contray to what has been stated before, surrounding enemies do not wait for you to finish them off one at a time. I got hit in the back multiple times. Stonger enemies can kill you in two hits.
I’ll see how his develops.
Stealth is easy so far, but i guess that was more of a tutorial.

Some reviewers yes.

I mean, the core of the combat is the free flow system from batman, i never had any doubt that the game would become a cakewalk after a couple of upgrades but i still had a glimpse of hope...

He lost me at "this is the most beautiful game I have ever seen" followed by 5 mns of description of the beauty. Using so much hyperbole on the most subjective of criteria just doesn't do much for his credibility at a time when payola for youtube reviews is heavily suspected. 7:10 mns into the review and all I've heard so far is how beautiful the game is. He seems completely intent on making up my mind for me about that before I go in. And spending so much time on the optics without mentioning any metrics (framerate? resolution? rendering techniques?) is juvenile.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I agree with the reviewer. The game is incredible looking.

I will love this game on theme alone, but my goodness it's an artistic masterpiece. It's like a Kurosawa and Hokusai had a baby.

Waiting for a PS5 upgrade to play. Can't wait to see the upgrade.

Imo switch to hard and enjoy some challenge.

If it's easy on hard i can't even imagine how easy it will be on normal...

There is a path. Just like Uncharted 2 was the original Uncharted's path. Now; given the genre they've dug themselves into they'll need to grow by at least 100 more devs to make the jump into that club. Not to mention, have the magic happen and the stars align. Both Sucker Punch and Bend have no business making open world games the way they're staffed but here they're - delivering quality.

I do wonder as you do about what decisions will be taken.

But that’s exactly it. I think Sony was thinking Read Dead Redemption 1 with GoT.

RDR was very much like Pirates of the Caribbean in the sense that it was set in a dead genre. Cowboy games don’t make money and Pirate movies didn’t make money.

But both Pirates and RDR put an heavy emphasis on engaging characters set in a timeless period. GoT seems to have put more emphasis on a specific time period where and the character’s journey is deeply tied to what happened in that time period in history, an invasion. RDR? Wild West gangs, Pirates? Treasure hunt. These feel more prone to sequels.

It will be interesting to see how many units the game moves and if Sucker Punch will make a follow up.

Well based on history mongol win in Tsushima but they lose when try invade main Japan, I can see sequel takes place in Japan itself.

Also Sekiro also may never get sequel like Bloodborne but it doent mean FROM should have never made it, not every game meant to have sequel.

I honestly never experienced when I played Second Son, I have my issue with that game the controls were not one of them.

If this game does well, you can expect Sony to increase their team size and budget, which will help them create a much more realized game. But expecting Rockstar level anything from anyone else is crazy though lol those bois are something else

there is no lock on option. I hope your right thumb is fast enough, it will need to jump from face buttons to the right stick quite a bit.
I'm getting it on the Pro but when it's cheaper. I don't think i'll still care for it by the time the next gen patch arrives.

From the videos it looks better than second son, still a bit floaty (i heard a review talking about this)

But you don't have near the same amount of climbing or jumps in this game so it's mitigated.

It's exactly like batman except no exagerate sliding towards enemies...so like mad max game but with swords.
If you played and liked that you will probably like this one.

I dont quite know what “floaty controls” means, but the character has weight. Tunring arround mid motion requires time and isn’t instant. You also can’t simply jump arround like Mario, since landing and reading yourself again requires time.

If anything, it seems like the game might be too easy. I've seen several reviews complain about it how it's nearly impossible to die, especially later in the game.

Depends on the kind of reviewer tbh. Your Youtubers I expect to be pretty decent because they're doing what they do because they enjoy it. Your magazine or site reviewers on the other hard are generally wordsmiths first and foremost and often times utter tourists.

It's more complicated than that, you need to change stances for different enemies...similar to Nioh. There are 4 stances altogether.
It's nowhere near to nioh deepness.

In here you just have stances that works better for specific enemies, 4 stances for 4 type of enemies (sword, spear, shield and brute if i remember well), in nioh there is a big difference with the stances and there is not one stance that is better for a certain type of enemy, you just choose what you find more comfortable between high with more damage and less defense, low with the opposite and mid with balanced offense\defense for various weapons, not only a katana.
In tsushima you only need to switch stance everytime you are slicing a particular type of enemy and that is the only deepness in the system, i heard enough combat "specialist" on yt who liked the game to know that this is the gist with this game.

I don't know why people think that tsushima is similar to nioh, they are completely different except using a samurai and having a stance system that work in a completely different way.

The combat is literally free flow batman + insta kill counter like old ac games.

Niho is a more fast paced and deep souls type of combat with lock on, stamina etc, they are far far away.

From the reviews the core looks strong but could do with polish. Overall just more polish. What is lacking is outside the core. More animators, more designers for side-activities, side-quests etc. It's the other areas outside the core they need that extra staff to make it deeper, more engaging and more meaningful. People forget how big the teams at Rockstar/CDPR are. That's the genre they've chosen and the peers they need to catch up to. You need a big team.

This why I tell people don't judge too soon based on a trailer, at first I got the same impression in God of War 2018 when I saw the first gameplay footage but playing the actual game was whole different story.

They did not play this on Hard.
Unfortunately i watched reviews from people who played on hard and they say that the game become pretty easy when you have a couple of big upgrade.

Maybe not a cakewalk for your average joe, but a cakewalk for skilled players or at least people who enjoy the challenge of a souls game.

This is not a Souls game though.

Maybe they will add a super duper hard one hit kill Bushido Blade mode with a NG+ patch.

Were you expecting this game to be as hard as Sekiro or Nioh? GoT is not like those games and is not trying to be, people make shallow comparison because all three have "samurai" in the game.

I hate this shitty politics, the majority of players are not gonna make a second run on a 50-60 hours game and usually the first run is always the best (because you know, it's the first time you experienced the game knowing almost nothing).

Why don't you put a super hard mode on launch instead of later?? You know like gow who had hard and very hard that were REALLY hard and very hard...

Spiderman, days gone, tlou2, horizon, zelda botw etc., all games who shine at highest difficulty but they only had cakewalk mode at launch.

Again, i hate this shit.

I wasn't saying that it was as deep as Nioh but I was saying 'it has different stances, like in Nioh' , the combat also has a crisp and precise feeling which is very important and puts it above Assassins Creed by a long shot from what many have said. But I will have to see for myself....

I'm just going off what people like SkillUp and others have said.

Stances in Nioh serve different purposes. Both games having stances is where similarities end.
It still adds depth, why do people react like I am attacking Nioh? I love Nioh too but it's a game about fighting demons... LOL

Bloodborne was relatively easy once you got the hang of it. Only the bosses posed any great threat, unless you get complacent, which I did sometimes in all honesty. The reviews I've seen sound very much like the set up I've just described.
