Actually, I have been somewhat surprised that so many people have expressed doubts that HFW gameplay will look like its trailer. I guess that means that people will be blown away when they finally see it properly demonstrated.

I guess it's because it's getting to the point where games will finally break into cgi-esque looking gameplay and that seems impossible in the mind by many. I mean I get it, until we have the Controller in hand and playing it physically with our own two eyes, it will just be what it appears to be; CGI/pre-rendered footage.

I remember the days of when I played FFVIII for the first time, saw the CGI cutscenes and would be like, 'I hope I get to play something like that in real-time someday'. I feel like we got some of that this generation. I'm still in awe at some of the areas I move around with Aloy in HZD on my OLED, specifically the Desert like Canyon area on the map (can't remember the geographic location name atm). If you told me 13 years ago that's how we're playing PS4 games, I wouldn't believe it either. And I think that's the scenario we are now approaching for next-gen. If not now at launch, then eventually somewhere down the road.

I mean, Ratchet and Clank? Kena? Straight Disney / Pixar stuff imo.

Earlier in this thread I was talking about how the Lockheart could be positioned as next gen's Wii with a really cheap price and GamePass as its differentiator. I said I would pick it up as a secondary console (PS5 first) if it was cheap enough.

I want to take that back. They literally showed nothing interesting.

This sucks because I also wanted MS to put some pressure on PSNow and make Sony improve it.

So just to summarise some of the points he mentioned in the video

  • The God of War sequel will be revealed in under a month with jaw dropping visuals
  • There is another exclusive IP in a known franchise which hasn't been revealed yet and is being worked on by Mark Cerny and is a launch exclusive, Tom said he would get into trouble revealing it.
  • The new Horizon Forbidden West trailer was all in engine and gameplay will look exactly like that
  • PS5 GPU has been heavily customised, the Geometry Engine is also part of RDNA 3 (2 sources confirmed this)
  • PS5's ray-tracing also has some customisations
I might have missed a few things so feel free to add, how reliable is this information? Tom seems very confident in the information and stated towards the end he's willing to put his neck on the line and will admit it if he is wrong.

This sounds too good to be true.

Please be true!

They are recovering from the shock.. but eventually they will regroup and continue their mission :messenger_grinning_sweat:
You do know that upcoming 1st party games like Playgrounds new Fable, Hellblade2, The Initiatives new rumored Perfect Dark, etc are next gen only, and will probably be shown at the MS July event? Or how about the new Bloober horror game that is next gen only?

What will be your excuse if Halo Infinite(cross gen) looks better than any game shown at the Sony event?

We have come a long way in computing. The ENIAC supercomputer of 1945 was capable of thousands of computations per second, used 160 kW of power, and cost about $6 million in adjusted dollars (it also weighed 30 tons). Power cycling the machine tended to blow a vacuum tube from the heat stress. 75 years later, we are looking at perhaps $500 for a 10 teraflop machine consuming say 300 W; an improvement of about 12 quadrillion times!

Still, offline rendering allows us to throw orders of magnitude more computation at the most subtle problems, so there should still be a gulf under some circumstances, especially where a detailed simulation is needed.

But yeah, it is pretty cool to break directly from a cutscene into gameplay, and not even realize it. That happened to me a few times in TLOU2.

Horizon will look like EXACTLY like in the trailer?!
I would be impressed.
But in my experience, it's never the case for ANY game.
Sometimes it's improved.
Sometimes it's all bullshit.
Rarely the same.

You said a few days ago that the Xbox show would be more underwhelming than Sony's.

Just curious, did you know something ahead of time? I won't ask or bombard you with questions if you did but just curious if it was a lucky guess or you knew something.

I am not an insider. Just a passionate gamer that has been following the business for decades and can see through bullshit when I see it. I was almost 100% confident that Microsoft would have a fairly disastrous show because of a few factors:

1. Phil Spencer is a dishonest snake oil salesman. He has constantly been pounding on the idea of "world's most powerful console", and "greatest Xbox games lineup in history" for ages. He does this EVERY single E3 to hype it up to be the best thing ever. Yet every year he continues to massively disappoint. There's only so many times you can cry wolf. I feel like he does this out of a place of insecurity vs. the amazing content that Sony puts out. Sadly, I think he has conceded defeat with Sony and all of these studio acquisitions are more about trying to do something different in the GaaS area. He'd much rather take a risk and try and strike big with GaaS than try and continually fail to produce adequate, cinematic, AAA single player experiences. He's rumored to be doing the GaaS approach with both Halo and Fable

2. The event in May was a massive misread, and it told me that Microsoft really doesn't have compelling content to show.

3. Logically, you can just look at the studios Microsoft has, what they've released recently, and connect the dots to see that nothing they have could possibly be very far along. Most of their major studios have released games recently, including their new studio Acquisitions, and their teams will require a lot more time in order to build up internally than Sony whose teams are already far more mature and established. In other words, expect games with much longer dev times from Microsoft.

4. People have gone to great lengths to try and spread FUD against the Playstation 5 hardware. Xbox Era discorders have spread tons of nasty rumors about 9 TF RDNA 1, console running hot and noisy. They are absolutely desperate for Sony to have another PS3 moment and have tried to turn an 18% TF "advantage" into some kind of game-changing difference that will be tangible in the games we have seen. I knew this was 100% bullshit. When even a 50% different in TF doesn't produce a big difference, you know that at the end of the day what REALLY matters is the talent that is able to put that hardware to work. Sony has it, Microsoft does not. Halo Infinite could pass as an Xbox 360 game, meanwhile TLOU2 could pass off as a PS5 title and looks better than any real time game MS has revealed on XSX. The reality is that these consoles are close, and the main driver will be STUDIOS AND TALENT, NOT TERAFLOPS. Therefore, Microsoft was bound to disappoint MASSIVELY.

Microsoft hasn't had a compelling E3 since the Final Fantasy XIII megaton announcement. They continue to disappoint every single E3 and always promise the world. Everyone, including myself, wants to believe that they will bring back the era of gaming they once had when J allard and Peter Moore were at the head of the studio. That was a time when Microsoft was hungry and wanted to take on Sony directly. You saw the expansion of Halo in a positive direction. You saw the development of new groundbreaking IP like Gears. They were eager to invest in new games from Japanese studios such as Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, something that Phil Spencer has failed to deliver on despite running his mouth this week about all the Japanese games he was proud of.

These are simple hard truths for people to accept, but I have seen through Microsoft's nonsense for far too long to be easily convinced that they actually had a showcase that could come anywhere near competing with Sony, a platform holder currently at the top of their game with a massive first party stable of matuere developers.

SunhiLegend works for Guerrilla Games now? What

First I've heard of it. What is he doing there?
Nah, they liked his horizon vids so much they invited him to visit their studios. then right before Frozen Wilds came out, they asked him to make footage for a frozen wilds gameplay trailer. that was pretty much the end of their collaboration.

its this one.

I would just add he said they really dont want to make another PRO model but thinks MS will.

Ive heard talk of the RDNA3 thing from somewhere else. If it turns out true it would kind of line up with some things. Everyone questioning VRS and PS5 not having it, the whole geometry engine, Cerny talking about seeing features in future GPU (or something like that)

Either way just tell me hiw much and let me buy one.

I love this Guy, but I have one question..
Is all about money or true love by Phill ❤
GFU0mzV.jpg
Yes in case of the pop of the fog could be more a thing of the GPU (the limit of draw distance) but I mean we saw the same problem in other things not only
the fog so now everything is for the GPU.

Also the engine of watch dogs 2 was created thinking in be used in a HDD so they follow the normal approach, saving a big quantity of assets in the
ram/vram, that is why he didn't see any impact in your IO in his test.

Looks like 343 cannot use a more aggressive approach with more extreme culling solutions, REYES or similar, heavier assets, transitions between LOD less
notorious because the same engine needs to run in a Xbox one, a weaker hardware even in 2013.

Note: yes I know Horizon runs 30 fps but at least doesn't looks as a current gen game and the Witcher 3 can run 60 fps in PC 4k with a good GPU.

So Tom is saying that he's heard from a reliable source that Sony will show off the next God of War game sometime on August and that it will have some jaw dropping graphics!? God I hope this is true! HYPE!!!!!!!!

I don't see in any way a new God of War this year, could be the enhanced version for PS5.

Let’s not forget the UE5 demo unless that’s not a proper example (if so I apologize).

It's been 12 hours since the showcase was released and the english version hasn't even reached the 1 million mark, so far it has 820K views. In contrast, the PS5 event was around the 10 million mark 12 hours later. I expected a lot more interest from the people in what MS had to offer.

Sony had ads running on ESPN at primetime and Twitch to alert people about the streaming, I don't understand MS sometimes, bad naming, bad marketing, this idea of a leader of the XBX team talking with fanboys on Twitter, they just seem to feed their echo chamber...

Just finished everything in GOT, every collectible, every color and armor etc. I feel so empty now, but got to watch what MS did yesterday and I might have fun by doing so, heard lots of praise for Halo :lollipop_tears_of_joy: .

For people asking where I've been. :messenger_winking:

EDIT: I'm in page 2467 :lollipop_downcast_sweat:
Damn dude! That was FAST!

Welcome back though. As you can see...you missed one helluva day today. People are finally realizing the truth of what Microsoft has been SAYING they are going to do. Ton of funny memes from it all though. Hope alls well with you and your family!

Why are some people so adamantly doubting a 2020 GoW2 reveal? I'm not saying it'll happen, but it's definitely not out of the question.

Even those suggesting a 2022 release, GoW1 and Spiderman were first revealed 2 years before they came out and just 2 years after they started development in 2014.

It's possible that they can show an in engine trailer then show gameplay next year and lead into a release date later on. Even in extreme cases like TLOU2, the game was revealed 4 years before it released.

Man....something's WRONG... That older version looks way better! Maybe it's just that the newer version gun is "new" while the other is weathered? The older one just looks sharper as well in that comparison. I must need new eyes or something...there's just NO WAY the new Halo would look just as good or worse than the older ones. No way. I guess I need to go to sleep.

on the youtube video, they say its representative of Xbox Series X gameplay so they themselves confirmed it was the PC version.

The real problem is that there will be no Halo Infinite sequel. this is a game as a platform. They will have the xbox one 1.3 tflops gpu and jaguar CPU hold back every new piece of Halo software going forward.

What a horrendous idea.
So ... maybe this is Halo's Fallout 76, a cheap spin-off game (which is also why it's not called Halo 6), and the real, Series X -only Halo, the TRUE sequel which will honor the legacy of the IP, will come out in 3-4 years.

What was that, Microsoft? Gotta say, yesterday I was so disappointed that I didn't feel like coming here to read the comments, but I'm so glad I have right now, all those memes have healing power.

I'm actually looking forward to stuff like Everwild or Avowed, but it's hard to say how those will actually turn out as of now. And, was actually anything in the show captured on a Series X?

I totally get that they are hellbent on selling the idea of Gamepass, but having one good service is no excuse to half-ass everything else. I'm quite disappointed, I expected better.

Well... they could tease the game with a GCI trailer, but a 2020 release... GoW was released in 2018. Its really not happening my dude... Maybe late 2021 if were lucky...

Also its generally a good idea, to somewhat temper expectations. Better to be surprised, than to be disappointed imo

Thank you brother! Just watched the event twice, once in 4K@60 and the second with Angry Joe. What a cringy event, I don't know which one is worse this one or the previous one. They tried so hard to look professional like Sony but body language gives it all.

- Halo looks like a remastered Xbox 360 game, it's below average compared to current gen before even mid gen refreshes.
- Everwild looked interesting but no gameplay.
- Forza is CGI trailer running at 24fps.
- State of Decay 3 is CGI trailer running at 24fps.
- Tetris? Really?
- Warhammer looks meh to me.
- The medium looks like current gen, but it's probably the best between all of them.

I expected a mediocre event, but not as low as this! Man, current PS4 exclusives look more next gen in comparison, and rightfully so.

This is an excellent post. I am so glad people are starting to see through Phil's bullshit. On old gaf, I got banned for questioning this guy's sincerity for months, it was infuriating. He is a hypocrite and lies profusely. Every decision he's made has been flawed and led to this embarrassing moment.

You are right about him being insecure. I figured him doing all those interviews and bigging himself up was confidence but it was insecurity. And you know what? That's ok. He didnt have the games, and that's not a crime. The issue I have with him is that he misled not just us, but his fans. He riled them up with statements like 'just being honest', 'feeling good about our showcase' and straight up misled his fans when he claimed that current gen wouldnt hold back Halo. That's a bald face lie that his fans accepted because well why wouldnt they. He's the CEO. He's THE top source.

Quite frankly, he wouldn't be in this position if he didnt cancel every good thing Don Matrick did. Don before he left, did the following:
  • inked a deal with Platinum Games
  • created a new studio Coalition Games and showed off a great looking AAA title at E3 2013
  • He had Fable in the works back in 2013.
  • He had insomniac making him an AAA game for year 1.
  • He had crytek making him an AAA game for launch window
  • He had Remedy making him an AAA game
  • He literally went in and saved Titanfall after EA was about to kill it without additional funding. secured a launch window game.
  • He was the one who entrusted Playground with a new twist on Forza
What did Phil do?
  • Canceled Coalition new IP
  • Canceled Fable
  • Canceled Scalebound and completely destroyed his relationship with Japanese studios.
  • Allowed Nier 2, Nioh, Yakuza, Shenmue, FF7, Persona 5 and so many other Japanese games to go exclusive to PS4. In some cases, Sony didnt even have to moneyhat. MS simply wasnt interested. Imagine Peter Moore doing all that work to get FF13 and watching this in horror as Sony literally gets these exclusives for free.
  • Canceled Obsidian's new IP Don had commissioned years ago. Obsidian said they wasted two years passing notes and couldnt agree on an idea. 2 years!
  • Wasted/Spent $100 million on a dead IP like Gears and forced Coalition to make another sequel no one wanted
  • Wasted/Bought Minecraft for $3 billion instead of spending $200 million buying insomniac
  • Wasted/Bought Tomb Raider timed exclusivity and Titanfall perma exclusivity AFTER they had already been confirmed to come to PS4
  • Sat around until 2018 before buying studios. Way too late as we see now.
Don might have been a jackass, but he still knew that you needed AAA games. He knew you needed single player games. I can dig up a thread from 2017 where Phil literally said that single player games no longer have the impact they used to have so he's gonna invest in GaaS instead. This was a month after RE7, Horizon, Nier and Zelda BOTW came out.

Now he HAS delivered on two consoles in a row now. So he does have a good track record there. But consoles are only as good as their games, and he simply cant produce them fast enough. A better approach would be to shut up and be honest. We are not going to have first party games ready for the first couple of years. Simple. Be a man, take the hit. Dont say it's anti-consumer. Dont rile up your consumer base. Dont make next gen games a bad thing. The arguments i have had with xbox fans recently have given me literal headaches. I cannot imagine a reality where next gen games on next gen consoles were considered a bad thing especially when MS themselves were going to make them.

Lastly, and this is very important. he simply shouldn't be tweeting guys like Timdog. He's toxic. His feed is toxic. I dont know about him, but greenberg follows timdog. Their twitter feed should be full of toxic comments aimed at gaf, gaf mods, gaf users and sony fans. How can you be ok with that?

I'm not expecting GoW until 2022 or 2023, but I can see it being announced 2020 - 2021.

Agreed on the second point.

excellent post and 100% agreed.

Don Mattrick gets a lot of hate, some of it rightfully so - he was way too early on the digital only requirements, and placed far too much emphasis on Kinect.

That being said, he still managed to at least have an exciting start to X1. Crytek delivered a true next gen showcase with Ryse In 2013 that shockingly still looks better than Halo in 2020. Titanfall was a huge exclusive for them. He got insomniac as you said.

He was going after big studios to try and deliver AAA content. Phil has been a disaster in comparison. Afraid of new IP, hyper focused on engagement metrics and bean counting rather than focusing on worthwhile content.

Xbox Series X is good hardware, but unless you looked at a spec sheet you wouldn’t know it. It doesn’t even feel like a next gen console. Same UI. Same controller. Same last gen games. Who the fuck is he selling this to? As bad as the Xbox One was, at least it felt like the launch of a new gen. There’s zero reason to get an XSX unless you are mesmerized by teraflop numbers. Halo infinite is going to look like garbage at 1080p or 4k.

Worst of all, Microsoft still has more bad news to announce when they reveal Lockhart. Their messaging and marketing is completely batshit crazy. Phil only says the crazy shit that he does to hide the failures of his strategy. It’s indefensible

who the hell launches not one but TWO new consoles with only games that are indistinguishable from last gen?

Earlier in this thread I was talking about how the Lockheart could be positioned as next gen's Wii with a really cheap price and GamePass as its differentiator. I said I would pick it up as a secondary console (PS5 first) if it was cheap enough.

I want to take that back. They literally showed nothing interesting.

This sucks because I also wanted MS to put some pressure on PSNow and make Sony improve it.
Wonder what games you play if there was nothing interesting.

I found the lack of gameplay yesterday severely underwhelming. Now, I have to admit, I have to muster up all my enthousiasm for Xbox titles as they are mainly just not my cup of tea, but I found out I just need gameplay to be able to work out if a game is for me. I enjoyed the event for what it was, but it hasn't persuaded me to buy an xbox along with the PS5 I'm definitely going to get.

Just want to convey this message to the developers: I know it's hard to get a piece of gameplay running in early stages of development, but I think a lot of players need to see what they are ultimately going to play. A small portion of gameplay as was shown in Kena is fine, but please do include it.

The main problem with the 343 Halo games seems to be stale art direction. As an outsider, if someone had told me the Halo Infinite gameplay was from the Halo Master Chief Collection, I’d believe them. Artistically, the older worn down gun model shows intentional art design. It gives it character.

All games have graphical flaws, but the art direction makes a huge difference. Control, Ghost of Tsushima, Breath of the Wild, God of War, The Last of Us, etc. It’s not just about resolution, it’s the artists and the style. Even Doom and Doom Eternal have a clear style to them, unlike say Halo 5. I don’t get what the art direction for Halo is now. It seems roughly the same for 20 years now and feels stale.

That’s what God of War was beginning to feel like after GoW3 and Ascension, but the 2018 reboot brought a brand new art direction to the IP and revitalized the series and Kratos himself.

Sony’s big AAA games all have solid art direction, it’s not just about graphics. Like Ghost. Good looking, but the style is the coolest part. Call of Duty Modern Warfare has good graphics, but it’s the generic modern military ascetic that can be boring.

Halo needs good graphics of course, but it also feels in need of a revamp artistically.
