Apple removes Fortnite from app store after Epic launches new payment system (Update: removed from Google Play store too)

What the hell is Epic thinking here? You don't have to buy or use Apple's bullshit. It's a putrid company with horrible products which rarely follow industry standards, but who cares. Just get a different device.

If Apple only took a 10% cut from the beginning instead of 30%, then they would still have charged the same price for the microtransactions. They don't give a shit about the consumers. Honestly I hope Epic loses.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
By the looks of it, Epic knew what the outcome would be with their payment system. They moved pretty fast with those papers that were filed.

As of right now, you can still play Fortnite on iOS. What are the odds that people who already have the game installed can be blocked from playing on iOS?
From the above blog post:

Because Apple has BLOCKED your ability to update, when Fortnite Chapter 2 - Season 4 releases you will NOT be able to play the new Season on iOS. Make your voice heard with #FreeFortnite

Basically - no new installs, and when the game updates you'll not be able to play with the current client.

I wonder if Epic can even do anything. Is there any legal argument they could use?.
I don't particularly like Apple, and the closed "we know best" nature of iOS is one of the reasons I prefer Android. But I imagine the terms are clear, and no one forced them to release on iOS.

The only thing I could imagine is them maybe arguing there's an unfair treatment compared to other types of businesses like Amazon, Uber, McDonalds, etc which as far as I know don't have to pay 30% for purchases made through their iOS app.

That "putrid company" is still the most valuable company in the world.

Damn. There's going to be a lot of pissed off people. I'm not a Fortnite person but I know there are people who have sunk a lot of money into this game.

always chasing the next thrill
Tencent Tim getting big mad. The guy built his company and career on ripping off more successful games and genres. I don't want 3rd party stores on my mobile devices.
Enjoy your appstore when there is fuck all to download on it because other stores offer the same app at 50% off

This shit is going to break apples walled garden so hard hahahaha 🤣

Their legal argument for all of this is shaky at best. Their legal documents even kinda read like fan-fiction choice cuts such as

Fast forward to 2020, and Apple has become what it once railed against: the behemoth seeking to control markets, block competition, and stifle innovation. Apple is bigger, more powerful, more entrenched, and more pernicious than the monopolists of yesteryear. At a market cap of nearly $2 trillion, Apple’s size and reach far exceeds that of any technology monopolist in history.

So it's basically just carefully worded propaganda. The crux of the whole thing revolves around "a series of anti-competitive restraints and monopolistic practices in markets" which are very well defined legal terms and will be difficult for Epic to get any of this to stick.

Instead, they're hoping that their customers will be the ones to help them change Apple's minds, not the courts.

Some how apple the bad guy. epic is charging you for fake shit in a game...

Why would a platform allow an app on there store if they don't get a cut? Even more for a F2P game since they don't even get a piece of the initial sale.

Why do you even need an app store to install on a computer?

And by your sentiment, why not 40% for Apple? 50%?

It's not even about allowing it on their app store, it's the fact that their app store is the ONLY method for loading software on your device.

On Android, Epic Games already has their own "app store alternative" where Epic gets 100% of the profit. Because Android is open and that kind of stuff is allowed.

Yeah that pretty much says it all right there.

I don't understand your point? The "app store" you install fortnite on your computer is the Epic store, they own it. Xbox PlayStation Nintendo, Google and Apple all get cuts of sales on there platform.

Now the why not 40 or 50% I guess its because the industry standard is 30%. Epic wants to push that lower, doesnt mean every one else does.

Assuming that a good portion of those transactions are on iOS, and Apple gets 30% of those, yeah it's safe to assume Apple is going to lose a shit load of money by delisting Fortnite. Whether it's enough money for Apple to care or not...

Not enough to care, I’d imagine no.

Exactly. And the fact that this was possible on Android is what finally led them to being able to play nice on the Play Store.

No such alternative exists for iOS devices.

Holy shit, I've never seen a big company go completely for the throat of another big company before. Lawyers are going to make a fortune out of this cat fight.

Apple have always been dicks with their app store policy, so I'm rooting for Epic , and hope it results in a more open Google-style store policy where you can sideload apps, and apps can incorporate their own payment features if they want to.

The gamepass app situation last week really helped Epics case here too, I can see a bunch of companies joining forces for a common cause. Apple having the last word hasn't been doing a good job of protecting users, and in many cases resulted in anti-consumer behaviour. Glad someone with money is challenging it.

I'm sorry but Apple and Google are in the wrong here. When I buy a game from Best Buy I'm not continually paying them a fee because I initially purchased through them. If I purchase additional content elsewhere that's none of their concern. Netflix and Spoitfy fall in the same category. After the initial purchase there should be no more recurring payments to apple.

EPIC agreed to Apple/Google's terms....and now is breaking them. So no, EPIC is wrong.

As for the bigger argument you are making...EPIC never needed to go on Google Play, Android can sideload and that is 80% of the phones in the world have a way for EPIC to not pay Google a dime. As for the 20% of world wide phones that are iOS...if you want access to Apple's customers (who all agreed to be in a walled garden)...there is a cost to that access in both cash and in how your software conducts business.

Epic is 40% owned by Tencent...the 8th largest company in the world and just as predatory as the rest of them.

I mean...
They...don't really have the greatest track record with consumer or competitive relations
They've been getting whacked over the head the past couple of years

Google "Apple right to repair," and "Apple anti-competition,"; they're in hot water with a LOT of shit right now >.>
Fined $1.2 billion in France and shit <.<

Investment money probably had a lot to do with wording on that

This I totally believe, but I think rather than the customers changing Apple's minds, I think they're leaning on the current shit going on with Apple in a global sense and going to apply pressure to the courts that way

IIUC current related law suits can be admissable in courts under certain circumstances, but I'm by far not an actual laywer lol, so don't quote me on that

On the contrary, altstore does exist. But is a little involved with setting up.
