Digital Foundry: Developers Having Difficult Time Scaling games back to PS4/Xbox One specs

According to Digital Foundry's John Linneman he has talked to multiple developers who have said no one wants to work on the under powered Jaguar CPU's any longer. Says it's a painful process. That was followed up by a post from Liza Shulyayeva who is a programmer and formally worked ad DICE who confirmed it is hard to scale to these older systems.

This also follows reports that Microsoft had cancelled the Xbox Series S or Lockhart early on because this was causing a lot of issues for developers. Source: https://www.thurrott.com/games/208837/microsoft-shifts-xbox-focus-to-anaconda-next-gen-console#

Could this be why we still haven't seen any games running on Xbox Series X?

Seems like I remember other rumors where devs were saying the S SDK was having a lot of problems.

Digital Foundry: Halo will ALWAYS be held back so long as Xbox One is tied to Xbox Series X.

This could explain why some upcoming Microsoft games have removed support for current gen consoles, although that can also be due to those games being further away than 2 year support window. John is right though, let these technological abominations stay in the past where they belong. Still can't believe what some devs were able to pull off on these machines.

This is Phil pitching and presenting ideas .....

The end result might look enticing, but it takes several steps to get there.

Just add this to the pile of news potential buyers love to hear in being convinced to upgrade to a potentially 5,6, or 700$ machine.

I never thought in a million years Microsoft would have a poor launch after the Xbox One debacle. Boy was I wrong.

There is zero reason to upgrade. What an embarrassment.

Isn't this cross gen support period actually a bit of a myth?

The only first party game I can think of that's cross gen is Halo Infinite. All the rest are next gen only.

And third parties have always supported previous generations for a while anyway, because of the huge instal bases. They're free not to if they don't want.

It seems to be a lot of fuss about nothing.

Same with the PS4 to PS5. It's one of the points of "we believe in generations" talk from Sony. Alot of what Sony showed won't be available on PS5.

In this particular sittuation Xbox One is really far behind because of all current consoles (PS4, PRO and X) he had the most differential video memory architecture. As much they want to shit PS4 for his Jaguar CPU they can't deny the GDDR5 and what most of Sony first party can archieve.

RE8 900p on Series X confirmed

But yeah, in the situation, Xbox One is the worst for holding new consoles.

Not only low TF, or jaguar CPU. But also a DDR3 VRAM. It's very OLD at 2013, it's worst today. (And this is the main reason why so many games run very bad on One despite PS4)

Me today

The real reason that big 3rd party publishers are happy to make deals with Sony over making the deals with MS.

Then add to this the fact that MS want devs to work harder making the games work on Xbox One , Xbox One X , Xbox Series X & Series S without getting extra money for doing more work.

Also this

Why are devs trying to scale down to the previous generation though?

No one is forcing them or even asking them to. Of course scaling a game made for 10-12TF is going to struggle running on a shitty 10 year old netbook cpu and 1.4/1.8TF of power.

What is even the point of this? Is it an attempt to say that the *other way* is hard too? Scaling up is infinitely easier than scaling down. Scaling down basically means you have to make a whole new version of the game.

Also I hope the irony of now saying DF know what they’re talking about isn’t lost on the non fanboys on here.

You do realise that none of what Ms showed apart from Halo will be on the XB1 either though, don’t you? Halo Infinite is literally the only “cross gen” first party game from Ms, and that’s because it is an XB1 game that will be patched with a Series X patch. There is no Series X version of Infinite, just a patched XB1 version.

Fable, Forza, Everwild, Hellblade 2, and whatever else they showed are all Series X exclusives.

Because if you scale up you're just going to get games that look like the games we already have but with higher settings on the Xbox SX but if they start with the SX they can make the game next gen then Xbox One will get whatever they can get to run on it that will most likely look better than the other Xbox One games but might not run so well or have a low resolution.

Makes their talk about supporting current gen even more bizarre, they barely have any games coming out for these systems. Xbox's marketing is so messed up.

I was just talking about the PS5 with oldergamer oldergamer .

Thanks for the input though.

As a whole, this has been the generation with the smallest jump forward over the previous in my opinion. It definitely has been the least most exciting in terms of creativity. I really hope this isn't a continuing trend.

Fascinating.

Makes you begin to wonder; if the rumors of Sony prodding with a checkbook are true, it becomes more clear why these publishers and developers are (possibly) willing to sign their bigger titles temporarily to a next-gen system.

One that seems focused on the future, by Sony's own admittance, rather than struggle to incorporate the past generations well beyond their expiration date for titles that just can't perform well on it or are held back creatively.

Grounded is already out lol
Early access (Xbox Game Preview), yes. And it's cross-gen, like Halo.

Game details
This game is a work in progress. It may or may not change over time or release as a final product. Purchase only if you are comfortable with the current state of the unfinished game. Full details on the latest status of the game, how you can give feedback and report issues can be found at support.obsidian.net.

Halo Infinite is literally the only “cross gen” first party game from Ms

I understand that people applaud how transparent Xbox is. But when they don't make any sense what good is that information?

Their marketing started off so strong earlier int he year. And then they just started to mess up badly starting with that 3rd party event.

No idea what's going on with Xbox to be honest.
