Let's suppose the rumors are right and PS5/XSX will indeed sell for more than US$499... say, $599... or more

Inflation is a bitch, especially when you talk about the dollar.

I honestly think $499 will be the actual price. Which would be the equivalent of:

2013 $448 - PS4 price $399
2006 $388 - PS3 price $499/599
2000 $331 - PS2 price $299
1994 $285 - PS1 price $299

Oh wow... if the PS5 is $499, when adjusted to inflation it’s the same price the PS1 released on 1995 🤔

There is less than 0 chance either console sells for over $499, literally below zero. Quadrupally so for Sony who has no Series S and are (allegedly) going full PS5 exclusive with first parties.

Dusk Golem said today on Twitter that he’s been informed the PS5 would be more expensive than the XSX. Digital Foundry also heard of something similar, this is starting to add up to an interesting. Let’s see how this all plays out.

Many people have expected (even before it was unveiled) that Series X would undercut PS5 to $399. MS has to buy marketshare and mindshare given their aspirations for Gamepass. Sony's elaborate case, cooling system, haptic resistive HD rumble controller, and exotic SSD | I/O system obviously cost a fortune, likely far more than MS's straight forward design, last gen controller, and extra CU's.

599 is very cheap for how powerful both the ps5 and xbox series x are so I don't understand why anyone would moan.

Inflation exists.

I remember my mum paying the kind of prices mentioned for our neo geo and jaguar consoles when I was a kid and I'm 40 years old now.

Ya'll need to research the word inflation it will calm your skin down.

This is what we'd all like to think, but there's stirrings to the contrary right now. And these aren't "YouTube Guy23442" with these mentions, they're people who've generally held up pretty well in the past.

My take would be they're feeding these sources/developers misinformation to soften the blow of $499 ("Great price, it's not $699 like the rumors, preordered!") or they're trying to bait the other party. I'm pretty confident both companies would be happy with $499, but are scared the other has been planning on $399 this whole time. They may well both be planning on $399. If you'll recall within 2 weeks of launch Xbone X dropped to $449 with a game, then $399 within 1 or 2 months, so it clearly fell fall short of expectations at $499. I don't think MS has many delusions about successfully peddling a $500 box, but with Series S picking up the slack they may consider it a possibility.

Phones are setting a dangerous precedent for consoles. $1400 for a tiny piece of plastic...why not pay that much for a big piece of plastic? good thing is that the economy is in the shitter.
Yea phones need a gold coating to warrant the $1400. Its not like there is tech inside that costs the money. Its the plastic. There is no problem with consoles costing that much with the specs they have. For a equivalent CPU and GPU you would already pay that much ignoring all the other hardware components.

I don't get it. Early adopters usually are enthusiasts. The same enthusiasts that don't blink when they pay a few hundreds of dollars for a new graphics card or 1000 dollars for a new iPhone. Why then is it such a big deal to pay 500 or 600 bucks for a console that will last 5 or more years?
Because these are devices children are interested in as well as adults. The higher the price the harder to convince mom and dad.

I think both companies have products for people who think $599 is too expensive.

Some people don't have enough money for food, some people don't have money for bigger diamond ring.

If you don't have enough money to buy $599 console. It's... ok. Just wait for the price drop.

P.S. But for Sony to expect 1,5 more sales for PS5 than for PS4 with higher is a bit unbelievable. If the really expect to sell more, then they have a roadmap with cheaper revision in the nearest future.

My opinion.

In there were consoles like the Mega Drive that cost € 400 without inflation. Games that cost € 90 without inflation. And what people did was work and save. Or rent games. Those consoles would last you 4-5 years. And you bought another one. Or you bought a megacd or md32x type extension. The PlayStation was really the first "cheap" console. Although at the beginning of import it cost you more than € 600. Even so, it was cheaper than the import megadrive that could cost you € 700. I'm not talking about NeoGeo anymore.

Now the generations last between 5 and 7 years. Consoles are cheaper and games are cheaper. And people have more money than before.

The problem is that these people prefer to spend € 1200 on an iPhone every 2 years to talk on WhatsApp. That doesn't seem expensive to them.

Life is a matter of priorities, but it is clear that many are very badly used to it.

500 or 600 for a device that has to last you 6 or 7 years is an excellent price comparatively speaking.

as my grandmother used to say ... "To know how to value food you have to live a war".

1. Grow up
2. Get an education
3. Get a job
4. ?????
5. Easily pay for your console(s), not matter the price.
Implying everone lives in a developed country.
600 Euros is the minimum wage where I live, and the vast majority of people here get just that, 600 euros(more close to 550).

I won't pay 600$ for a console, and I am pretty sure a lot will skip the first months until a price drop if that happens.
I have the money but even though I really like PS5 I can't justify that amount of money.

While I could see this happening, and still be relatively good deal relative to it's power, if they price at $599 or higher I think they will not see the volume of sales they want. Either or both could falter out of the gate. Early adopters will still buy it, maybe a million of each, but after that all bets are off.......

you are right, pc parts are more representatives for consoles cost than cellphones.

Inflation is a thing, I've always been surprised that consoles and their games have managed to avoid aggressive price hikes in recent years. $500 today is not what it was 15 years ago or 25 years ago.

That said, I think the real story here is that price point during the middle of this pandemic. People are likely pinching pennies and will be ill able to splurge on items like this. Couple that with a very tepid launch line up for either machine and yeah, I can imagine that sales will not be spectacular.

If you haven't been saving for the last year then tough tittie really. Like impatient kids, you need to save up to buy things if you're not well off enough to drop $500 - $600 as though it's nothing.

$500 (with tax) is like something I expect, but given the lineups it's not worth it
$600 is something i think the boxes are worth

Beyond that, wait for price drop or until I am left with no option to buy because the lineup and experience is so good.

price will only be a problem for one of them if the difference is big enough (and i don't see it happen)
otherwise it will be not even they are both around 700 (imo)

Inflation no? PS3 was $599 in 2006. That was 14 fucking years ago. Both consoles would be a bargain if they released for anything under $599 now.

It comes down to games. If the new Black Ops looks more in line with MW, or if GT7 comes in Dec, I'd buy a $600 console for that. I'm not expecting $700 and I don't think console manufacturers are in this business to sell machines like that either.

I'm expecting this to land on the cheaper side because last gen surprised me on price.

Let's compare to a similarly specced PC

Ryzen 3700X costs 280 bucks (it's the only 8 core Ryzen that is comparable, they all boost much higher than 3.5GHz)
RX5700 costs around 350 bucks (has 9.7TF, so it's comparable to the 10TF PS5 GPU)
1TB NVMe SSD (5GB/s) costs 200.
16GB Ram 60-70 bucks

Now you still need PSU, Mainboard, Case which is about another 250-300.

So, just in terms of PC hardware prices right now, you're getting a decent mid-range PC that would cost you around 1000 bucks. If Sony and MS manage to sell this for 599-699, then I'm more than fine with it, but I don't expect them to cost more than 599. Microsoft will most likely price match Sony.

What if they mimicked phones with a 24 month payment plan.
Sony could bundle PSNOW and PS+ with a $600 machine. Have people pay $40/month and lock people in for 2 years to their service. Throw in some movie rentals per month and the heavy price tag could feel more palatable.

Microsoft could do the same thing.

In a world where people will drop a grand or more on a smartphone that will last them 2 years, it's for some reason unthinkable that a console should cost more than $499 and will last you 6-8 years.
Smart phone is a bad comparison. They're basically jewelry. Your console on the other hand isn't a status symbol that is going to convince a potential mate of your earning power and success.

It's also a bad comparison because the $1000 smartphone is the top of a product line with price points for practically every consumer. You can spend $1000 on a smartphone. I spent $20 on mine. Consoles on the other hand are typically one price point or a couple price points with relatively small price variation. Every one of those people who can't/won't spend $1000 on a smartphone but will buy a cheaper one aren't going to buy your expensive console.

How the fuck do these companies expect consumers to accept that price? I mean, seriously: PS3 at $499 and $599 back in the day had the 'revolutionary' Blu-ray medium as storage and playback function, but even then, it had a really hard time selling and many changes had to be made hardware wise to make it cheaper as soon as possible and get back the market they lost.

Honestly, these consoles will have SSDs, nice, and 10.2 and 12TFs, and quite honestly, that's not as huge a jump as we were to expect from a generational leap. I think it would be quite acceptable to get them as $499 AT MOST, but more than that, how can they justify it to the greater audience?
Do you really think, basic customer cares about SSD and this shit?
Maybe GAF care, maybe reeee cares, maybe 10% of all console owners care. Majority of them cares only about price. That's why it's so important and why Microsoft and Sony are playing game of "who blinks first" for 3 months because they don't want to be first to announce to the world that "....ehhh, consoles won't be as cheap as in PS4 days, guys"

Microsoft is already doing it.
It's called Xbox All Access.

You can get XOneX, with 2 years of GPU and you can upgrade for next-gen in 18 months for 24,99$ per month.
And of course, Microsoft will have same plans for XsX and XsS

Most people don't buy a 1200$ phone, they buy a 24 month 16$ monthly mobile plan. Most people who buy a Iphone won't spend more than 20$ in the App Store for its entire lifetime. They won't pay another subscription on top either.

Consoles? Completely different story isn't it? Gaming is a content business first and foremost.

People should have been saving up monthly for a new console for at least a year if they can't afford to just walk out and buy one on the spot. People are not good with their finances anymore it seems.

Also, i'm sure both Sony and Microsoft will have a financing option like the Xbox All Access Program to help soften the blow.

PS5 has games and we all heard the rumors of them getting loads of 3rd party exclusives, they also have a great track record for delivering on exclusives.... so I do not have one doubt in my mind about my invesment in these devices.

In my work 75% have an iPhone. They change it every time a new one comes out or every other version. And they buy it because it is "cool" in their own words.
And make sure others know about it. Many
are department directors or company presidents (to whom it is more useful, without going into details). On the other hand, there are others, such as ordinary workers or even interns (who charge less than € 1200 or even € 1000) and they are all the time talking about Apple and buying iPhones and wireless headphones. Don't underestimate the power of fashion and wanting to belong to the "cool" elite. Obviously there will be everything in the world, but speaking of what I have seen, those same scholars have complained about the price of PS4 video games.

I do not see that coherent. And it has nothing to do with the fact that I currently use android. I have been an apple user in the past, with ipod, ipad and imac. But I have never thought that current video games or consoles are expensive.

And by this I do not mean that iphone users are inconsistent. Each one does with their money what they want. But if you agree to pay € 1200 for a phone then don't go crying saying you don't make ends meet (I've seen it) or that the consoles seem expensive to you (I've seen it too). And it is sad to see when they also have children.

I'm surprised people are still holding out for £399. It would be PS3 levels of losses on each system sold given the specs, ain't nobody gonna take that on the chin this time.

I expect Microsoft to undercut Sony on price here because they can. Sony will have a much harder time taking the losses that Microsoft can. Sony is a hardware-first business and they lack the services to make up for taking any big losses in the onset.

TBH I kinda wish they had a 1200 version for adults with the same performance but liquid cooling, more memory and a glass and metal finish. I'd buy that in a second.

true. it's been obvious for a long time now MS don't really care about how shipping consoles. sure if it does sell a shit load then they'd be happy but they just want you buying games from their stores (xbox + pc), subscribing to gamepass, or making money off gamers through Windows

you can't really go buy Sony exclusive games on PC unless we're counting Horizon/Death Stranding. they don't have a store on PC. and their subscription services don't have half the value as MS.

It’s common sense that the PS5 and XSX will be $499 AT MOST, but people like to fuel stupid rumors, and spread FUD.

Just like those rumors that are spreading FUD about the PS5 because the Xbox is having a hard time getting good word of mouth, so they spread all that BS to try to make people doubt about the PS5.

Next gen consoles will not be more than $499, period.

Sony is doing pretty well now, this isn't broke Sony from 2013 that you're dealing with..... the situation with 3rd party exclusives should already be an indication.

They could easily take a 100 euro / dollar loss on every console for the first year or two.... they would still be making money. PlayStation as a division is highly profitable.

I feel I'm going to be linking this page until I die but here it is again: https://electronics360.globalspec.c...l-release-hardware-analysis-60gb20gb-teardown

Key quote about pricing and especially how Europe subsidised the US/Japan launch price.

IHS said:
Upon initial release, the PS3 20GB model analyzed (now obsolete) retailed for $499, while the 60GB version retailed for $599. This still, at the time of writing (June 07) appears valid for the US market. Also at launch time in Europe (March 2007), the same product was going on sale in Europe for 599 Euros (or approximately 33% more than the US version, and 425 pounds Sterling in the UK (>40% more than the US). To some extent these differences may be explained by high local VATs throughout Europe, but may also be part of a Sony pricing strategy to minimize hardware losses over time as well.

I don't mind it if they bring the power since it might be cheaper in the long run if I don't have to buy a "Pro" version in a couple of years. Plus I have that $1 Game Pass sub for 2 years after launch so I won't need to spend much on games.

I mean...I'm pretty sure Sony's SSD is pretty expensive. That thing is a monster. However until I see how it will translate into their 1st party games I can't justify spending more than $500 on either console really. I'm aiming for a 30 series mid spec GPU more than likely. If it's right at $500, then I'll bite.
