It was a given, the 7nm node is incredibly expensive, EUV even more so. The size of the die doesn't help the cost either. MS had to cut down on RAM, and go with asymmetrical setup, largely due to cost.

PS5 on the other hand, has saved cost to the extreme by going for a small SoC. But, I've no doubt they are spending a lot more building that 12 channel DMA controller and obviously flash.

Interesting how they chose the I/O over having a stronger GPU. That's a pretty big gamble for them.

Edit: Only managed to play 3 hours of Halo 5 Guardians though. That's how much I didn't like it.

Edit 2: The only part that I didn't like about the Bungie Halos was the Flood and the library.

Interesting how they chose the I/O over having a stronger GPU. That's a pretty big gamble for them.

They think I/O and SSD will drive more new and immersive gameplay experiences than just more GPU power. Cernys' keynote is centered around that. MS went in a different direction, whereby a bigger priority for them was GPU.

Thing is, the advantage on GPU can be perceived a lot easier because there are raw numbers for pixel and framerates for performance. Whereas to display this cutting-edge I/O and SSD, you have to show some gameplay which has never been done before. I'm talking about the stuff Cerny mentioned, like streaming in assets on the fly as camera is being panned.

I don't think we're gonna see that in first batch of games, the engines and tools would have to be re-designed to tap into that power.

Halo 5 is not on pc though.

Anyway, on an xbox x ALL previous halo titles can be played at a high rez locked 60 (MCC)
But all the people I know (halo players) prefer halo 5 arena to ANY other previous halo arenas.
For very good reasons too, as everyone finds the gameplay simply better on 5.
The only place I see people saying halo 5 plays bad or worse than previous games, is on internet forums.

To cool the jets a little bit, this hardware is not akin to tensor cores in nVIDIA GPUs or else the die would be a lot larger. It's a basic feature offered by AMD in RDNA architecture. A quote from tomshardware:

The slides do mention Machine Learning Acceleration, and note an "ML inference acceleration" of 3-10x for a small die area cost, but that could be via FP16 or INT8 calculations run on the CU clusters.

The 12 channels for the PS5 SSD is the internal interface, that connects the flash to controller. The external interface is PCIe Gen 4 that connects the controller to the main chip. The x4 indicates 4 lanes.
