I don't think I ever realized you could do this

It can be done, but it's still not snappy or good enough; especially when dropping out of a game, with the PS4 button on the controller, it's moving like it's through molasses. I don't even want to start talking about PSN parties.... it's a pain.

They have no excuse for NOT having a responsive UI this time around, and I want also all those things kyliethicc kyliethicc mentioned - switching in between games, the resume function, cold boot up of the console.

I understand, don't show me half finished games which are "not representative of the final product" but hell, show me at least the UI. You can do that Sony, without breaking NDA's with AMD or someone else.

My only problem is the PS Store, it's sluggish AF. But for everything else I just use the menu. Checking trophies of the current game I'm playing, who's online, turn off PS4, it's all there. I'm curious about the UI on PS5 but as long as they keep this feature, it's all that matters to me.

Yeah if I open the store or PSNow it slows right the fuck down. I'm not sure what the deal is there. Hopefully the additional power will make it all snappy.

its really weird that the ps5 price still not leaked
and no one knew about ps5DE till sony revealed the console
sony ninja are doing great work keeping everything in secret

Only two ways this can go. Either the secrets will be fantastic news when they come out or bad news when they release. If there's one thing I'm certain of is that it will he huge once it's revealed. For better or for worse.

Agreed! My PS4 HDD is showing it's age and I'm about to switch to a SSD one. I'll see how much difference does it make on the UI. I'm hoping for it to be a bit faster.

I'm surprised at the replies about this.
It's a Sep 2016 feature guys. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

How only 512GB is the S weakness. For Fortnite, annual FIFA/Madden players, it should be plenty.
Its only gonna be about 350 GB or so usable. That sucks if you're coming from a 1 TB Xbox One S currently. Its enough, but they should offer a 1 TB model for a bit more.

It will depend on the price of the expansion card. If thats only say $100, then it's fine.

I'm not buying into "Sony were blindsided by the Series X/S prices". It sounds like nonsense.

Heck we had fellow gaffers predict the price very accurately and we had leaks. But Sony didn't know? LOL

I think they had a good idea of what Microsoft's pricing was going to be. Curious to see wether Sony plan on undercutting them or wether they'll price match. I think the former is more likely.

IKR, like 90% of gaf had MS targeting the One S and One X price points, but Sony had no idea. Most of us have thought $399 for PS5 DE, we'll see if that holds up as well.

lol it’s beyond ridiculous people think Sony was blindsided when half the internet got it right to the cent.

If Sony’s plan was to sell the disc edition for $599 it will be $599... if it was $499 it will be $499.

So it won't hold back games but will cost more (money is almost alway a factor when considering scope) but then goes on to say you'll have to de-scope a little bit. I'd argue de-scoping is hold back a game, no?
Yes in a way, when you delta is not so big like for example PS4/Xbox one and PS5/XSX is probably
you only need to change the resolution and optimize some of the jobs in each console because
yes not everything scale with resolution 1:1 .

The thing with XSS is since the beginning of the gen we have a machine with a big delta in GPU and
memory so they need to invest more time in the moment to optimize.

Probably some say was the same with Pro versions of this gen but not exactly most of the games have
has a target or even the minor requirement the base versions at least in Sony and third party side looks
works in that way, the reason is simple usually is easier to scale above the target than down of that.

Of course is possible to do it but you has studio need to considered the extra effort to do it, because even
if you see the games in PC in many of them AA and AAA has a minimum requisite something similar to a
console so they ignore many features which exists in the high end of PC.

Because remember guys the console in a just a couple of year will become a budget PC in performance
now imagine the extra work to optimize in XSS, another option they start to dev in that console like many
studios does with the base Xbox one with many problems in framerate or resolution even in some first party.

For those who think the delta in PS5/XSX will make some games look noticeable better than they should also
think the XSS will probably just looks horrible.

The truth is probably in the middle is not so good as Xbox say where many games will be running to 1440p with
the same quality as XSX without affect the scope in some way the dev of the game of its big brother but neither that
means the games will looks awful compare XSX or make look the XSX looks much worst, XSS is much more superior
than Xbox One X not only for the CPU also for the features of its GPU, new audio chip and the SSD.

It baffles me as to why Sony haven't.

Xbox want to guarantee a sustained minimum of 2.4GB/sec for developers. If you could put in any SSD, you run the risk of it overheating and speed being lowered. Plus having an external solution means you can unplug the cart, take it round a mate's house and whap it in his Xbox Series console. (Yes you could also do that with a HDD but come on, this is 2020!)

It's going to be extremely interesting to see how Sony have rigged the PS5 so that it not only cools the APU but the user-installed SSD as well.
The expansion cards are cool, but it will depend on price. The flexibility it offers to remove, use it with another system, or even someday buy 2 and swap them in and out is all great.

All tech has fail points. Even the Xbox cards only have a 3 year warrenty. HDDs fail. If Sony say the M.2 drive works, should be fine.

For the PS5, Sony probably wants to give users more buying options. Same as PS4.

Sony can and probably will just partner with Samsung or whoever and throw a "PS5 approved" sticker on some M.2 drives.
Both Sony and Microsoft did that with external HDDs for current gen.

Like this:

But it will certainly be installed internally into the PS5 and not easily removed, unlike the Xbox card.

Thats's my main interest in a teardown. I want to see the PS5 expansion bay.

Not sure where or who is saying this but it is common sense they have a very good idea what each other is doing.

E.g. take the example of PS5's variable frequency tech. Microsoft emphasised to DF multiple times during their XSX visit their clocks would be fixed and wouldn't vary. They obviously already knew PS5 had some sort of variable clocks (via the dev community?).

I'm sure both MS/Sony have designed the consoles to a certain retail price with a bit of wiggle room either way for various force majeure.

And adapter for M.2 drives? Have you seen the size of those things?
I am sure there will be some clever guy in china who will find a solution, for example L form?
The adapter will be cheap and with time the slower SSDs will be extremly cheap too, or you can use one from the old PC. Will work, and for a good price it will sell :messenger_grinning:

The Xbox will not support them.
