Jim Ryan: PS4 will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years more

Quote: from the Washington Post article

"Ryan said he expects up to four years for the PlayStation 4′s expected life span, which makes sense considering the console’s large install base. The PlayStation 2 had a life span of about 13 years, and developers continued to support it several years after the PlayStation 3 approached its middle age.

“The PS4 community will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years,” Ryan said. “Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4.”

When people slowly begin to realize that this whole gen is cross-gen, there will be no real jump until 2024/2025 and these current consoles are just a cash grab before streaming services take over everything

Not with PC Gamers extending a defiant middle finger!

I actually thought this gen (PS4/XB1) was going to be the stop gap gen, but the mid gen refreshes greatly helped to extend it.

They also hurt how big of a leap next gen looks to be, ironically enough, but I called that 2 years ago.

How dare Sony continue to support the old machine and not cut all new games off 2 years before the reveal of a new generation then try to sell us a game pass to play those same old games like Xbox does.
How bloody dare they! You can't call it a new generation until you stop making 1st party games 2 years before you release your next machine!
What sort of company still makes exclusives for your current customer base? That's so UnAmerican.

You buncha Goddamn melts!

Duh... Sony consoles always last for 10+ years. They shooting for 140M.

Yeah, that doesn't mean they will provide cross-gen games for another 4 years. LOL. Same crap they did with PS1, 2, 3 and now 4. IIRC PS3 didn't received 1st party PS4 games after launch. Maybe i'm mistaken. But anyway, Sony doesn't ditch their fanbase to early. But many people will interpret Jim's words very differently. Just like i've mentioned in firts sentence

Guys guys guys, stop it.

The Sonybros have eaten way too much crow today. Stop it. Come on. Have some consideration for them already.

Nah, sorry, We've had to listen for months on end to their drivel about Xbox cross gen games and how Sony believes in generations, all PS5 1st party is next gen exclusive etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam. They have more than earned their gigantic banquet of crow.

Everyone seems to be reading this as a whiplash 180, but the previous PS is always supported for a few years after, isn't it? What he didn't say was that EVERY AAA title will be cross gen, which is the other platforms position, so they still reserve the right to make PS5 exclusives where they don't want to be held back.

If a game can run on both it should. It would've been very anti-consumer to exclude a game from PS4 'for reasons'.

The problem really arises in Sony's dishonest 'we believe in generations' PR fluff and the torrent of gloating fanboys that took that message and injected it straight into their bloodstream.

It's been used as a cudgel against Xbox for months and very few of those true believers will have the good grace to admit they were deliberately mislead by their deity. Or, in fact, learn a single thing from it.

We all know who they are though. :)

Edit: Phil Spencer has been described as 'Lie dispenser' by some on Gaf, Does Sony now have Jim Lyin'? :)

haha, I've already started to read some "but sony knows how to make cross gen titles". New narrative is coming lol
In reality, this is good news. That whole "holding back" argument was stupid, non sense. It was obvious that Sony was not going to abandon a 120 million user base, as well as that userbase will take some considerable time to move to the new platform.
Aye, no need to be upset. For real.

They said this while showing off a ton of games labeled as PS5 games which implied to everyone they were only on PS5.

Don't give them a pass on a technicality and playing with words. It was a PR move to say it when they said it.

Why are xbox fanboys so happy at this news? PS5 still has miles, ratchet, and demon souls which looks miles more next gen than the 0 games that xbox and PC currently have. The games will definitely be held back by 2013 hardware but still miles better looking than anything out at the moment.

So with all that Jim Ryan had said will all Playstation first party games be Cross-Gen for 3-4 more years?

Not what he said at all. He said that Sony and developers will continue to support the PS4 for at least a few more years. In other words, it's business as usual for Sony. They typically support their consoles for a long time after the successors arrive.

There was one Sony PS3 exclusive that came out a month after the PS4 launched. It was a very, very big title as well. Everyone expected a remaster.

Gran Turismo 6.

Times have changed, though. The fact that Horizon 2 comes out next year and will be on PS4 as well is proof of a much different strategy this time.

It will forever be hilarious when people try to troll something they don't understand only making them look more and more like idiots.
Very embarrassing replies far in this thread.

Yup. Pretty much. But the trolls may continue. Its great entertainment.

I'm not trying to and it's unfortunate that "we believe in generations" became such a fanboy cudgel, but there's still a notable difference in their stances is what I'm saying.

You call this standard practice for this industry taking L's ? LOL How long have you been gaming for?
There were still PS3 games released well after PS4 was on market.
Please do tell me what AAA first party games were released on PS3 after PS4 was released. And let's not ignore the context here, the fact that Sony was talking about believing in generations and current gen holding back next gen and their loyal base eating it up and talking about it nonstop every chance they could get. Let's also not ignore how Sony played their loyal fans by hiding the fact that almost all their next gen games they revealed so far were cross gen. It's shambles, Xbox level shambles.

Which other platforms position is this? There are already confirmed XSX exclusives. So, yeah, this is absolutely a 180 and the exact stance Microsoft has been getting raked over the coals on for months.

Seriously, Google "we believe in generations". Sony was quite clear in their message until they completely shit on it today. It was absolutely a 180 and it's crazy people are trying to spin it any differently.

I don't disagree but they didn't present it that way and honestly still haven't. Everything "negative" has been done via a blog post.
