Where is "80€ games LMFAO, GTFO SONY" in the poll? :/ PS5DE looked like a brilliant offer but only for like an hour or so, then the game prices were revealed and currently it's undeniably the worst offer of the 4, by far. By investing additional 100$ into the regular PS5/XBX you basically saving yourself a shitton of money, just in the first year alone. It looks better than the disc-based SKU, but that's the only advantage I can see in DE.

So, if games were still $60 like this gen then the $100 is a pretty significant savings. Those games would go on sale and be down to $20 fairly regularly and so that $100 is a pretty big gain ....

Two things though: 1.) prices are up by $10 so you can most likely scale down the sale prices for games to only get down to $30 or so (that $100 isn’t stretching you as far now), 2.) (this the big one) if you have more digital consoles out there less incentive to make good prices. Those are consoles that can’t operate a game from a disc have no competition. Sony has no second hand market to compete against. No retailers to undercut them. Their pressure to lower prices are eroding.

DE is value for specific use cases. If I wasn't using the game sharing across primary/secondary accounts then the disc edition becomes the more sustainable for me. Even at £70 release, because I split the costs brand new games are effectively £35 for me anyway 🤷‍♂️

It's the best console for some who hates dealing with discs. ;)

By the way we don't even know if Sony will allow for game sharing to work the same way as on the PS4. It's likely they may change the user agreement to prevent 2 people from playing 1 copy.

Haven't had a disc drive on my PC since 2010, so why should a console be any different.
Physical copies on PC sadly became irrelevant, because you now usually get a Steam key in the box. On the console you still are the owner of the game and you can resell it without issues.

I think a lot of people complaining here about "OMG 70$ PRICING HELL NO" dont know that game sharing exists or haven't tried it themselves.

Guys, just check the PSN Store and halve all the prices. Thats what you really pay if you game share with a friend!

I dont pay more than 35€ for a brand new game DIGITALLY! And my friend and I usually wait for PS Store sales so we pay even less. Usually 10-15€ each.

PS. We are even sharing PS+ Membership.

I will buy one with Disc Drive.
But the truth is that PS5 DE made buying a XSS have no point.
For 100 $ more you get a true next gen machine, bigger and faster SSD and imo a better collection of games with PS plus Collection (which also costs 60$ a year compared to gamepass’ 150$)

So what you're saying is that...
- you need a friend
- you need a good friend who won't try to steal your account
- you need a friend with identical taste to yours

Was game sharing even confirmed for PS5 yet? What happens if you don’t have any gaming friends or they have different tastes from you? Sure, sales do happen in the PSN store, but rarely as cheap or often or as low as online shops or retailers. We are going to just just start the new generation, so I’m not expecting decent sales on digital for quite some time.

It will be, a few years down the line, when launch titles are one quarter the price at launch.

Not really, game pass is constantly adding new aaa games, this collection of old pps4 games that were selling for $10 on the digital store has almost no value.

Sales and game sharing exist in the store too. But dont let me spoil your hyperbole

Was game sharing even confirmed by Sony yet? Also, sales do exist in the digital store of course, but you will literally always find better prices with physical games and will have more purchasing options instead of being tied down to one vendor basically.

With 22 more EUR per game (40% increase) for next gen, the 100 price difference makes no sense to me.

I'm going for DE.

My last disc-based game on PS4 was Uncharted 4 in 2016. As for higher prices I've got no problem to be late to the party. I only get 1-2 AAA titles per year max, in fact the last "recent" big title I got day one was RDR2 in 2018. ;)

"most gamers" are in for a nasty shock when they realise that initial saving is significantly offset by higher game prices and the inability to reclaim any value from a game they've played and won't replay.

To all PS5 digital haters:
Have you ever shared a PS4 digital game with a friend?????Meaning: Splitting the costs for a game. You know you can have 1 PSN account on 2 systems, which means: Every brand new game you buy together on PS Store costs only 30$ each? E.g. You share the costs for 1 game, you buy and download the game, he then logs into your account, downloads the game on his PS4 as well and can play it with his own account.

When days gone (10$) or SOTC (10$) was on sale in the PS Store, I only paid 5$ each, because they were on sale on PS Store and we shared the costs.

You can do all this with the disc version too if that's what you want to do. But you also get the option of taking advantage of sales from every other store.

I don’t hate digital, I just want options including trade-in value.... but....

No. I have no one I trust enough to share an account with... and... I don’t want to need to agree on games to buy them. That’s me though.. anyone that can and wants to, that’s great!!

According to your logic, if you buy a can of Coke, you are a Pepsi hater. I think you take it too personal. It's about spending my money the way I see it best.

Also remember, that with a disc version of the console, I can still buy digital games if I want but now I have a lot more ways to get games than just one. Used games are generally cheap here, which gives me a lot of ways to enjoy them.

On top of that, I don't own a 4k BD player, this will be a nice bonus.

No it isn’t, when I waited outside of GameStop, some people legit passed on the pre-order because only the digital was left. Digital is only good if you don’t share games with anyone, and you don’t go into any store to buy games at all.

Not really, the sweet spot for most gamers is where they can spend the least amount of money. The PS5 digital edition is $100 more than XSS without any games. Games will cost $70, €80 in Europe (ask a casual European gamer if they’re willing to spend that on a single game).

The XSS on the other hand will most likely come with at least a month free Gamepass trial which gives you access to hundreds of games. Not only that but any future first party titles and some launch window titles will be added to the subscription. For someone coming from a PlayStation they will have accss to most first party titles from previous gens too.

Then there’s the question of the performance difference between the two which a casual gamer couldn’t care less about. Especially when it means that for them to take full advantage of the PS5 they have to spend hundreds if not more on a TV that is 4K at least. The XSS is aimed at gamers that haven’t decided to upgrade their TV just yet.

Has anyone justified why the disc drive costs $100 nowdays ? It's like paying 500$ for 1TB SSD back in the day.

Because I will be able to more often buy discs at better discounted prices from stores than digital on the PS Store and I will also be able to sell my games when I'm finished with them. What is it that some of you do not seem to comprehend about this?

I have a question. I have many games in my catalog that I didnt have played because of time constrain, all of them being PS4 games mainly given each month from PS Plus.

Can I download and play those games in the PS5?

I do believe so. I'm in the same situation and after Demons Souls I might finally slide in that Witcher disk.

And I have about 8 more lol.

I mostly buy digital games because it’s more convenient but I got the disc PS5 because I like to have the option to play games on discs or 4K Blu-ray’s on the console.

I don’t believe in reselling games because I think it’s stupid to buy a game at $65 then sell it for like $20-$25, you lose so much money doing that over the span of a consoles life cycle. But I was once a broke high schooler/college student so I understand why some people do it.

It's another funny discussion.

Internet : "Choice is good. Games should be released on every platform, more options are better"

Also the internet: "Disc is bad. Digital better for no disc swapping, sharing games" (forgetting that the disk version can do both)

We're seeing another narrative push from industry-hired shills, to try and proclaim digital as the wave of the future, while wilfully ignoring that a disc-based console does both.

Yeah. But it looks like shit.
Agreed I wish I could go digital but I ain’t paying 200 bucks for a mediocre 4k player that doesn’t work for certain movies which apparently seems to be the case for most on the market now. But fuck the digital is pretty.

So you're renting then, not buying. What is it about that which you don't comprehend?

I'm fully digital when it comes to games, I have been since the tail end days of the PS3. The only reason I'm buying the disc version is for films.

Digital is only good if you don’t share games with anyone, and you don’t go into any store to buy games at all.

I think thats actually a large majority now... the trends of a niche gaming forum doesnt represent the overall market very well.

Cmon, its 399$.
Compared to XSX:
- Almost same performance (18%-25% delta)
- 2x faster SSD
- 100$ cheaper
- better 1st party games (2021 looks packed already)

compared to XSS:
- Almost 2.5x the performance for only 100$ more
- 4k vs. 1440p/1080p
- bigger and faster SSD (512gb vs 825gb)
- better 1st party games IMO

What do you think? IMO the PS5 DE is the sweet spot for most gamers. In the 7 yrs of PS4, I only had 1 game on disk (CoD Ghosts) which was a gift. So I will gladly go digital only. I shared all my games with a friend, so every brand new game is 30$ max. each and theres almost always some kind of sale going on. I hope Sony doesn't change account sharing with the PS5 lel.
Lol

It has tremendous value for those not having a PS4.

Well if you believe this board, those people don't exist. Plus it's not a tremendous value, they coukd pick up the 3 or 4 games they want from that list for $30-40 permanently.

Compare that to new games.....its not even in the same league.

I went ALL DIGITAL 3 years into the generation.

I loved it. I love buying games digitally. Its such an efficient way of playing games. I was all in for a digital version if the PS5

But the new prices for games are atrocious for someone living in South East Asia.

A single game already costs 200++ where I live, that extra ten dollars brings it up to 300+.

I'm not even poor, just simple economics and comparing the options given by getting disc version and digital version to me.

Imagine buying a console where you only have one store to buy your games XD. In 2-3 years were gonna get the inevitable threads "Why is this old game still $70?!" Don't complain about prices later when you bought a console with no competing storefronts.

Wtf is this.

Tim Sweeney, is that you?

Are you trying to get Sony to have an Epic games store on Playstation now?

Please stop before Apple yanks your chain again :|
