I've seen this mentioned a couple of times, and it makes no sense. Buying Insomniac made sense. They're a workhorse, and their output is consistently solid. They had a close working relationship with Sony for years, and have had solid sales. From Software? I'm not even sure they're in the same stratosphere. That would seem like a waste of money, IMO. That would be analogous to MS buying Rare years ago. You expect it to pay great dividends, and then realize that the developer was always kinda flakey.
From Soft won game of the year 2019, have passionate fans, use small budgets, influence the industry with their Souls game design, and have been making PlayStation games since they began. Their first game ever was a PS1 game. They're a big name Japanese developer, close but not quite the level of Kojima.

Insomniac (who are great) have no where near the critical love for any of their games that Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Sekiro do. If it wasn't for From Soft, Demon's Souls wouldn't exist and the PS5's big launch game (remake) wouldn't exist either.

Sony should continue to lock up Kojima games and start buying From Software games to PS5. Makes perfect sense to me. Quality games.

Xbox just bought all of Bethesda. Why not go buy Elden Ring?

Bo Microsoft have a market cap of over 1.5 Trillion dollars. I love PlayStation. But I can do basic math and I know 1.5 trillion is fucking huge lol. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, these corporations are on a different level.
Market Cap is the sum total of the value of their shares.

Share prices are a product of how "the market" values a company.
Microsoft don't actually have $1.5 Trillion. They are simply determined to be worth $1.5 Trillion by some bullshit economic mechanisms.

Heck the sum total of Microsofts total assets probably doesn't even add up to half of that.

sony buys spider-man for avengers = anti-consumer
xbox buys all of bethesda = pro-consumer?

nah, same shit. I don't mind the exclusiv stuff tho. Its "anti-consumer" but who cares.

Good job Xbox, ya bought yourself a lot of exclusive games now.
They are fighting back Sony. Thats all. This may force Sony release games on Xbox also.

Yeah I understand how market cap is calculated. They idea is that all current shareholders could sell off all stock and suddenly they'd have 1.5 trillion in cash. Obviously such a scenario is theoretical. Any firesale in reality would drive the price down rapidly, etc.

But it is a very accurate measure to compare corporations' values. Price+volume.

Now imagine if PlayStation tweets out "Time to reflect" Ghost of tsushima butt pic/hot spring pic. Followed by a megaton 10 days later -> Activision, Capcom. From Software or Ubisoft are now acquired by Sony :D

Ubisoft is too big, Activision as well. Capcom/from software/Konami/SEGA/Square Enix are possible, but let's not talk about something isn't happening or rumored yet.

Well, this is a big one. I'm not the biggest fan of most of the franchises affected by the acquisition, but they certainly are huge. The value proposition of Gamepass skyrockets. Nicely done, Microsoft.

I'm very curious to see if Sony has been planning to acquire any studios, and if they weren't, would this force their hand to do so... Personally, Kojima and From Software would be my first choice of studios out there to acquire, but, I simply say that from a deep love for their game output.

Man, this shit got really interesting really quick.

From a Microsoft standpoint this is a big move by them, credit where credit is due they had the cash and went for it.

In terms of a games standpoint and me as a gamer, oh gosh, i seriously hope this will not be the death of most of those ips. I have said it once, i have said it a hundred times, quality is going to take a tumble when gamepass gets involved.

the pressure to release content on to it, well i hope those games are not going to get worse and worse in terms of production value and quality.

I hope i am seriously wrong but i fear this is another nail in the coffin of good gaming. Time will tell.

For the moment nothing shows that game pass creates lower quality games

Wasn't there a rumor that Microsoft was going to announce today a $50 price cut for both Series S and X to drop the mic before the preorders? If so, that would be a historic mic drop coupled with the Bethesda acquisition.

I‘m hoping that this will increase the level of competition, which will in turn force both Sony and Microsoft into working harder for our money. To look on the positive side, this may end up benefitting us as gamers, and give us more choice.
