CDPR institutes mandatory six-day work weeks for Cyberpunk 2077

Agreed. I’m a little worried about the game now, after the delays and now this crunch after they previously said they would not do crunch. Gives me some concerns this close to release date.

I know that crunch is normal heading towards release, but with the stance they previously took towards the practice, I don’t know. Hopefully it still turns out great.

This really needs to be highlighted.

CDPR promises its employees they won’t have to crunch... and even publicly boasts about it, using it to fuel their pr.... and then they go back on it.

They’re either a) completely corrupt (and seriously audacious), or b) are having a fuck ton of problems with this game.

How many years have they been working on this? How many delays have there already been? I mean... don’t paint yourself as a nice guy if you’re not a nice guy!!!

id rather work 6 days a week with set hours then be expected to work like 20 hour days. It will be interesting to find out what the situation is and or hopefully reward for this "crunch"

Feature creep maybe?
I imagine that's an absolute bastard in these open world style games.
No idea if that's the case here but game designers can be a law unto themselves unless you reign them in quickly.

Considering most if not all of those employees will be getting a pretty lax work schedule for the rest of November and December post launch, I don't doubt this is a trade off they are totally fine with.

Well and people work 80 hours per Week and Others Work 4 hours per Week. I guess you can Always Quit your Job If you Like to have a Change..

I think we all should have jobs that give us free time. I would not see this as too big an ask from a company once every 4 years.

I have done much worse for work that is much less energizing. Thankful that is not now, but it is not a crazy ask from an employer. At some point we have to work more to meet a deadline, and usually it is the result of some wasted down time during the project. Not exactly unfair.

If they are already stealing time from these people after hours or at home, I dont think this is appropriate. Push the it back or put out crap. Doesnt bug me if it is playable.

Not acceptable. No human should have to work more than 35 hours a week

Really? Perhaps there are "humans" who enjoy what they do, take ownership of what they are given and do the very best they possibly can even if that means working an extra day on a hugely ambitious game that the world can't wait to play.

If you don't like it, fuck off and find something else. Pretty simple logic from where I'm standing.

Difficult tradeoff, especially when being a publicly traded company. Force crunch and finish an already delayed and highly anticipated title during the launch window of the next gen machines in time for holiday season or delay again, avoid crunch and face furious gamerbacklash (because lets be honest, it would come with much more force than news about crunch will ever be) and not so happy shareholders. In the end it is a boring question of adequate compensation and the legal situation in the given country. I would assume with poland being a part of the eu thus having to fulfill certain legal frameworks (and i am very well aware how ironic this sounds given current events regarding exaclty that in other fields) that everybody whi is not happy with this situation can quit the job wihtout problems or sue the employer

“I eat shit so they shouldn’t complain about having to eat shit” is a hell of a take, but I’m probably going to buy it day 1 anyway so I can’t really tut tut too much

I expect bugs
Good policy with literally any big open world rpg.

Although I think in this case, console cert in the cause for crunch. I expect the PC version to be in better shape.

Crunch sucks, and I feel bad, but 5-6 weeks of crunch is not that bad by industry standards, let alone at a studio in Poland where workers tend to get a lot less in general.

I can already predict I'm going to be very active in this thread.

CDPR, more like CCCP.

Yes, because CDPR is holding staff at point blank range.
It's not like they can quit or go on strike.
No.
They're chained to their desktops.

Let's paint a caricature that can fit in a single catchy phrase.
Anything deeper would hamper the memes.
Please think about the memes.

Absolutely fuck that. I'd be out.

Finally, someone who gets it.
Don't like it? Talk to management and try to have them hear your point of view.
Didn't work?
Go on strike.
Still failed?
Quit.

OK everyone, let's crunch it up! Illegalize and criminalize crunch!

We could criminalize stupidity and that would certainly wipe out a number of post around here.

You don't get to decide, you don't get to interfere in voluntary relations between employer and employee. What if employers do want to crunch? I've crunched many times in my life. I knew what I was getting into. I was paid appropriately. I'd do it all over again, thank you.

I don't require your permission or your approval to take decisions that don't concern you and don't affect you in the least and neither should CDPR employees. They do not require the blessing of any gamer before making a professional call that concerns no one but themselves. This applies to both a decision to crunch and a decision to refuse to crunch.

Again, if they don't like it, they can try to negotiate, to persuade, they can go on strike, they can quit, start their own indie studio, go work for the competition, etc.

Their life, their decision.
Not your life and therefore not your decision.

(...)

Jason can go start his studio, where he'll risk his money and run it according to his work ethic.

Not acceptable. No human should have to work more than 35 hours a week

Ah, yes, Comrade twistedmetal has decided for the whole of mankind what's acceptable and what's not and now the whole of Poland must comply. Even if employees voluntary want to crunch - because, for instance, they'll be compensated, or because they take pride in their work - our Dear Leader twistedmetal in his infinite wisdom and boundless empathy for the whole of Mankind has decreed that his imperial will is law.

If I were an ambitious young CDPR staffer with a career to propel I'd be laughing my ass off at any onscreen attempts to limit my own working schedule against my own will, all done, as usual, in the name of teh most pious empathy for others.

Yes, empathy for me translates into denying me the right to govern my life as I see fit.

Keep that kind of empathy to yourself.

if they got paid, why not?

i want to play this game this year. period.

I hope it's delayed until 2021 just so I can do this:

I have no problem with crunch personally. I am OFTEN in crunch mode on various projects, sometimes working 7 days a week (and 10 hour days). It’s just part of certain industries (I work in information security consulting). I could choose to do something else if my QoL got too bad.

My concern is that they publicly said that they would not do crunch, and now surprise - crunch. Makes me think the game has issues. If they hadn’t been so vocal about no crunch, this coming out wouldn’t even have gotten my attention, as crunch is normal.

The way I see it, as long as they're getting paid for the extra time, then I think it's worth it in the end.

I don't like crunch and I would hate to do it, but if you really want to be in this industry, you can either roll with the punches, strike, or try to make difference in your own studio.

If they actually get a day off, it seems like it would be better than traditional crunch, where you're at work every day all the time and are expected to be, but not one ever explicitly states it.

It's the reality of every massive and complex RPG.

I'm not even worried about it. The odd bug every here and there never bothered me much.
Dull or unambitious core design is much more of a concern.

It's weird how everyone on the internet is always screaming bloody murder about "bugs". Like when I'm playing a Bethesda game I might occasionally experience some bit of jank and then I just shrug and move on. I know it isn't easy to catch every little imperfection in something this complex.

But then you go to the forums and every angry fat gamer is just fuming with rage like they can't even launch the game or something. And I've found that a lot of the "bugs" people complain about would be more accurately described as user errors.

You would think by now all devs should be able to figure out how to manage development without the need to crunch. It is especially bad in this instance having promised publicly not to.

Thing is many or even most launch games this November will see devs crunching right now and not only that but the supply of what will be millions of consoles and games. Imagine how many Amazon and similar employees throughout distribution alone are "crunching" 6/7 days a week to ensure these consoles and games end up in us gamers hands!

Also this news seems to be coming well late. If this game isn't to be delayed I imagine it already has, or will in the next week or two, gone gold if it releases in November?

2-3 times a week is the right amount of crunches, more than that is just over-stressing.

And the rule is basically the same to obtain a 6 pack at the gym.

I work 7 days a week as a 911 operator most weeks with everyone getting quarantined. 12 hours a day for the next week as well. I still get my 1.5 hours in the gym on top of that. They'll be ok.
Yeah but you sit on your ass answering phone calls all day. It’s different from coding or graphic design.

There are plenty of industries where people work 6 or 7 days a week. This is nothing new. My brother is a union carpenter and works 6 days a week 12hrs a day when they're in crunch mode. Union is ok with it

Funny as I was about to write that we're looking at another delay here folks.

They're gonna cancel "crunch" after all the criticism and announce the game has been delayed until Spring/Summer 2021 because of the challenges of Covid and not wanting to "crunch" their employees.

No doubt in my mind whatsoever.

I'm actually ok with that as long as there are no forced crunches till the game (I've already pre-ordered it) comes out.

"I do x+2 easy, therefore everyone else will be perfectly fine doing the same amount of hours in a different job because all humans are totally the same"

No, don't be stupid, stop that.
