I agree that perfection is not achieved without some suffering. While I’m fortunate enough to hold a position with a lot of flexibility working hours, I too have worked overtime to finish projects in time out of sheer dedication for my work. As much as I like my job, I can’t deny however that I would never crunch that much, as the job conditions at cdpr do not look healthy at all. Productivity also is severely reduced by poor work life balance so it’s not just a matter of job quality but also poor management in general.

Also cyberpunk 2077 is still a commercial process which will inevitably make a much larger relative margin of profits that Herzog’s masterpiece has made. Games might be art but they are not just art for art’s sake, and I’d bet that not all developers see their profession as an art.

What annoys me is if you did work the extra hours and are well paid for them then use that money to get nice stuff or get yourself a promotion these are the first people moaning about "privilege" and spouting shit like "eat the rich".

Doing 14 to 16 hours a day is fine maybe once in a while. If it's every day for years then that's seriously unhealthy BUT that's also a lot of extra money. You could rack up some serious cash if you are on a decent wage.

At some point though responsibility does have to lie at the feet of the employee. At what stage do we say "OK if this job is that bad then you need to take personal responsibility for your own well being and leave".

Even if it means refusing to work more than your contracted hours and looking for a new job.

I dunno why we have to act like these devs don't have control of their own lives and just can't do anything other than work and work and work some more.

I don't think that the problem is circumscribed to cdpr, as this looks like a much wider industry problem. It's not just a matter of leaving for a new job with better conditions if everyone is crunching the same. As said earlier, I agree that at least the developers getting paid for overtime at cdpr kinda mitigates the issue. The problem that emerged from that dev post however is that people who want to work their working hours are also pressured into crunching.

I mean I would definitely say its a problem but it's a problem that realistically needs to be fixed by people just saying "nah I will just be working my 40 hours this week and enjoying my weekend, see ya".

Employees need to understand their contracts and stand up for themselves.

I would be a lot more sympathetic if this was some run down town in a developing nation where the only choices are work at the local factory for 12 hours a day or die in a ditch.

I am going to assume though that if someone is skilled enough to get a job at CDPR, resourceful and competent enough to get the qualifications for that field and navigate the recruitment process then that person is well placed to find other work in other sectors.

Now, if working on projects like this was their dream job then I have sympathy but again at some point personal responsibility needs to be taken.

The outside factor here is that we already know the kind of people Jason Schrier and Jim Sterling are and how they feel about "capitalism" and what the prevailing worldview is on ResetEra so they become a bit untrustworthy here also since they have a clear agenda and see this as an opportunity to push it.

I think in video game terms its kind of shocking for us to be all excited about new consoles that are manufactured in who knows what kind of conditions but we're up in arms over a developer paying their employees to work more.

I know it's possible to care about multiple things at once but in the video game industry I feel like crunch at CDPR is not a major injustice.
