The European Union should really be presented as one block in charts like this, given its market integration and borderless economy.
Still things like VAT and laws do differ to some extent, so it is interesting to see individual countries listed as some people may wish to infer if these have an effect on sales.

Possibly, but not representing single markets as they actually are skews any data, and renders it pretty inaccurate in terms of analysing the importance of different markets.

I'm surprised Canada is that low.
Also surprised that Germany is above the UK. I know Germany is a larger nation but I thought the UK was more into gaming.
 
Yeah EU is not a country it is a trade block (with dysfunctional political aspects), it also does not have a unified digital economy, so it cannot be counted in such a chart.

China & Korea are major PC F2P domains.

Russia was 99,99% pirate country in the beginning of 2000s, but then they did the industry did the right thing - they did a lot of budget releases of big games with Russian translation, so thy became available and little by little created a habit in customers to buy licensed games.

It was quality product that was convenient to buy and was not much more expensive than pirate games (broadband internet was far from widespread).

It's what many industries missed - to make the service more convenient and/or more affordable for the customers so that they would prefer to buy licensed product to pirating.

Music and video industries spent a lot of money fighting pirates and technology. But then came Apple with iPods and then Spotify came with streaming. They made the service convenient and affordable and people are paying.

I agree.
It is a market and it would be 3rd, before Japan and after the US.
This things are relevant because companies will try to please the larger audiences, that is why we will see more China "culturally censored" games (to add on top of USA "cultural censorship")

Thailand in the top 20, with a relatively poor population is pretty impressive. That's 90% mobile gaming. It makes sense now that Gameloft is partnering with AIS to bring Blacknut cloud gaming here. It's weird, because I'm pretty sure it's all mobile games being offered through the cloud.

China and Indonesia are probably heavy on mobile gaming too. However, China banking that hard with such a large population is crazy. That's why Tencent is so damn big. They're pretty much printing money with games and Wechat.

Indonesia looks like a good place to make money too, given their population is sneaky huge. That's also a relatively poor nation, at least the average citizen.

I'm surprised Singapore isn't on there. Maybe the pricing is so ridiculously high for mobile games, that most of the gamers there stay f2p. We've compared pricing with some guys I play with some Singapore, and they're usually getting stiffed for like 20% higher prices than we get in Thailand. Brutal.

EDIT: Oh yeah, no Korea is a bit of an eye-opener. Anyone that plays freemium mobile games knows that Korean whales are monsters. I wonder if the piracy scene there balances the scales. You have crazy whales, but a bunch of freeloaders who never pay for anything.

i have this curiosity, i dont live in the US but i bought all my games/consoles at Amazon USso that mean those revenues are counted to US right?

Not a single language. Verry different economies. Very different companies who are bin in one or the other.

The EU is still nothing like the US

But this way we get more data. What good would adding them all into one stat be? If a company wants to invest in the EU market they are usually smart enough to know that they can add those values up.

I think that while Russians aren't willing to pay high prices for games, they're very willing to waste money on microtransactions. IIRC Crytek's F2P online shooter was basically a failure in all markets except Russia, but its success there kept it alive because Russian gamers were willing to put up with almost anything as long as the base game was free.

That's quite a large chunk for only 3 countries.

True, but that difference isn't that much, and the actual market is larger, given that there are more consumers in the EU than in the US. My point here is that when you break things down into individual countries in the EU it does not give an accurate representation of how video games companies see the video games market. Hell, the same applies to any business.

Yes, this needs to be spread more.

The EU as a market (leaving aside all the other stuff about politics, language etc) is THE LARGEST market on the planet. Yes, larger than China and the US (not combined though lol).

Video games are booming in China’s smaller cities, with citizens there accounting for more than half of revenue nationally, according to a recent report by Niko Partners.

“76% of gamers in China live in Tier 3-5 cities, accounting for 70% of game revenue,” Niko Partners said in a synopsis of its China Gamers Report.

Cities in China are classified by tiers based loosely on population and economic size. For example, places such as capital Beijing and Shenzhen are generally considered tier-one cities, while lower-tier cities are smaller.

“What we think is happening with the smaller tiers is ... there are more and more gamers adapting to uses of mobile devices,” Lisa Cosmas Hanson, founder and president of Niko Partners, told CNBC in a follow-up interview.

With “fewer things to do for entertainment” in smaller cities as compared with their cosmopolitan peers in Beijing and Shanghai, “gamers spend their time with little cost entertainment which can be social.”

The spending habits of those in China’s lower-tier cities differ from that of their peers in larger cities, Hanson said.

For example, she said many gamers in the China’s smaller cities tend to “keep the ads on” in their games because they don’t mind it as much. They also tend to spend less money on in-app purchases, though the aggregate spending level remains quite high as “there’re so many people” in the cities.

Citing a study examining the differences between gamers in Tier 1 and 4 cities, Hanson said those in the smaller cities were “convinced” that free-to-play games — which tend to make money through advertisements or in-app purchases — were cheaper as compared with their premium counterparts where a higher price is charged upfront.

“They feel like they’re getting a better deal because they feel like they’re in control of the spending, but actually they wind up spending just as much or more,” Hanson said.

Asked about the potential sources of external competition for gamer attention in China, Hanson said: “It’s a shared interest among almost all the internet users in China.”

“There aren’t 720 million people spending a whole lot of money on most other types of entertainment,” she said. “It’s like the one thing that everybody does more than anything else.”

Theres no surprise there. If you look at past years, germany is pretty much a bigger market than uk for a long time. Makes those uk sale threads all the more weird. Such a tiny, tiny market compared to the big three and its even lower than another european country, but for some reason we take uk sales as more than it is. Game X sold 50 thousand copies in the uk thread. Yeah, so what ?

Saudi Arabia should be much higher because most gamers here prefer the US & UK region of the PSN/Xbox store

Canada is only 37 millions people

Spain is 47 millions
Italy is 60 millions
UK almost 67 millions
France 67 millions
Germany 83 millions

it’s more or less about population.
