Cancelled Games That Were Ahead of its Time / Possible Today

Clear

CliffyB's Cock Holster
Pretty sure authentic Dirty Harry game wouldn't be possible today.

I remember pitching for that back in the day, I wonder if the project got sunk the same way that Constantine was due to WB being basically new to game-dev as a publisher and only offering bonded-financing.

In the case of Constantine we actually had a deal, a team ready in place to start work, and it got pulled at the last minute because the boss got nervous about the funding, bonded being understandably super-risky due to game dev being far less predictable than making movies.

This kind of qualifies, as the game was released to the public, but the peripheral needed to utilize a certain mode was not.

Missile Command 3D was released for the Atari Jaguar, but it was originally intended to work with this unreleased device:

Yes, that is Jaguar VR, the virtual reality headset that was planned for the Jaguar back in 1995. The VR headset was canceled, but there are 2 or 3 working prototypes out in the wild.

Missile Command 3D was released on cartridge for the Jaguar, and can be played on an ordinary TV. However, the code for the VR mode still exists within the released game. It's a separate mode, similar to the way that many PlayStation 4 games have an optional VR mode that can be accessed while using the PlayStation VR headset.

If you happen to be lucky enough to own one of the Jaguar VR prototypes, then you can use the ordinary retail cartridge of Missile Command 3D to play Missile Command VR. My understanding is it works similarly to the "Virtual Missile Command" mode that is playable on a standard Jaguar system (without VR), but with head tracking and 3D effects.

It would be cool to see this concept revived and updated to work with modern VR systems.

The Getaway 3 comes to mind. I actually believed the PS3 could do those graphics real time. I think only the Pro could pull it off, not even the OG PS4.

I backed this game the day it was announced. I have the golden ticket, and lifetime insurance whatever any of that does. All I wanted was Squadron 42. A new Wing Commander like experience. Then I saw the success of the campaign and I thought this is bad because this is scope creep to the infinite. All I want is the single player game. The persistent universe stuff sounds cool, but I don't really care about it. I just want to play a story driven space shooter. I gave Chris Roberts a $100, so eventually maybe I will get the game. Who knows.

I would still like to see the studio and get some actual gameplay form SQ42.

Resident Evil Outbreak File 3 was never released, but even the ones that were released were ahead of their time. Online co-op Resident Evil just was too early when it came to PS2, which had online as an optional module in a time before WiFi gave the masses access.

Same here with the golden ticket. I don't expect to ever actually play this though.

It looked sooo cool at the reveal. I wish Sony would go back to it, I imagine that was going to be a mix of GTA (or Need for Speed) + Uncharted....

Everquest Next was a failure from the get-go, but I always thought the design & assets would have been a perfect foundation for an EQ reboot/reimagining. The Disney'sque art direction was flawless and would have given it a unique identity. Fingers crossed they're actually working on something like that.

Advent Rising
Too Human 2 (fight me)
Demonik (360 launch title akin to Psi-ops)
Totally agree with Advent Rising. The first was pretty fun, but they maybe bit off more than they could chew. I can't even imagine them trying to release that now with society's tendency to try and go "cancel culture" on everything. Hell they were giving that game guff because of it's writer even back then.

Too Human, looks like you can be one of the few to stand and be counted right next to Dyack himself. Game was trash in my opinion. But to each their own.

Demonik never looked good to me. It looked far enough along though that I'm surprised it didn't get released.

I'll take 'Aliens Crucible' please.

RPG made by Obsidian in the Aliens universe. You have to build skills (accuracy), customize character, manage team (anxiety, fear).

Looked pretty awesome.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Each and every time I see these threads I truly think of Goldeneye HD remake on the 360, I remember it being close to being released. I remember the hype and than I remember it being Perfect Dark instead... Probably the most important game of the 90s and yet it’s ignored but should be in the public eye huge respect to Rare on that gem.

Yeah the game mechanics were mental to say it launched on the OG xbox. It put Mass Effect to shame in that area, and, if i was going tinfoil hat, i would say Advent Rising became Mass Effect, or at least ME took a lot of cues from AR.

The potential for that game was huge. It was the first co-op hack and slash for consoles and played like a twin stick shooter. It was a numbers game where armour, weapons and skills had to be carefully picked for the right class, otherwise you were going have a very difficult time. It was still ahead of its time though, as we haven't seen anything like it since. It was panned in the reviews for laughable things (Your character keeps its' armour on during cut scenes, a reviewer knocked it 2 points for that)

I liked Demonik because it looked like an evil version of Psi-Ops, which was a fantastic game. Totally agree, it looked like it was going to be a launch game, then nothing.

Project Offset! Great shout. That game looked amazing 10 years ago, while doable now.

It got to a point where you felt like a god in Advent Rising(which I guess was the point kind of) and yeah it definitely had STRONG Mass Effect vibes before ME was even a thing. I forgot about that Twin-Stick flicking thing you'd have to do with the controls, but I remember it working super well and dual wielding powers and weapons was a blast. I can say too, that I'm guilty of trying to find ways to clip through walls and shit to win that 1 million dollar prize at the time. I remember being excited for a sequel. Which with how the story went, you would have thought they already had in the works. Only other Advent thing I can remember even being announced was something for the PSP.

Psi-Ops was such a great game, you could get to the point where you felt like Magneto hovering on shit and blasting people away with your gun. So fun. I can see the parallels too now that you mention it. But Demonik looked rough. I recently watched Grandma's Boy and can't believe how much footage of that game they used in that movie. My wife asked me how come it never came out too, which is funny in regards to this thread.

Advent Rising had levelling up skills and abilities based on usage. Wanted to be a bad arse pugilist? Use fists only. Want to be a crack shot? Just use machine guns. I loved that aspect. The bit that stood out for me the most was being in space, on an alien space ship and being able to 'force' pick-up enemies and throw them in to space. Like, no fighting needed, just pick em up using telepathy and throw them in to space. I was amazed. It's a real shame we didn't get to see more and i would love for it to be BC. It's an easy win for MS to finish off the trilogy.

Yeah Psi-ops was awesome. I miss games that made you feel like a freaking God or monstrously powerful. Being able to hack minds and have them explode vs using weapons was so refreshing.

I didn't know that about Demonik being used in a movie. Maybe that's why it was cancelled? MS shit their pants about their new console (360) being seen as a satan worshippers console?

Another vote for "Too Human"...
Anyone remember True Fantasy Live Online? I am unsure if it was in any way playable but the idea of what it could of been
Prey 2
I remember seeing it when Xbox Live was first being advertised and thinking the art directions looked fantastic. I was actually excited to play MMOJRPG for once. Then that got cancelled.

There's an Happy Madison productions stoner movie called Grandma's Boy and the game Demonik is a HUGE centerpiece to the whole movie. It's not a great movie, but not the worst by any means and has some pretty good actors in it before they hit it big.

True Fantasy Live Online

Thrill Kill

If I'm not mistaken Thrill Kill was released. Just not officially on store shelves. My uncle was a 3DO/PSX developer at the time and he had a copy.

edit: looking back. Well No, Thrill Kill wasn't released. Just less than scrupulous, shady individuals like my uncle got his hands on it because he was in those developer circles at the time.

That Zelda teaser for Wii U >_<

Actually not canceled, just never existed at all...

Still looks pretty good to me, I know using the new engine twice in rapid-ish succession is pretty common but I'd still be interested in a look and feel like this. I learned to like BoTW in the end, but this would still interest me.

And NOTHING on the Wii U ended up having that kind of output. "1080p, check that box".

I think they showed off in-engine gameplay at an E3.

They released one, or two, I can't remember, on the OG Xbox and carried the saga on from Sega. Microsoft were rumoured to be making another one but it never materialised.
I just know of Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future. Future was released on the Xbox. It was the better game too IMO. Bigger world and better graphics. I don't think a 3rd one ever materialized. I think they had it down in concept art but it never went much further than that.

Basically every Peter Molineux's games.
Remember Project Milo or the original Fable where if you cut a plant when you're young, it will be a severed tree?

Daredevil on PS2. Stings me the most. I still remember seeing the ad in a game magazine as a child and going to multiple stores on the day of release but finding nothing but disappointment. Wish the internet was as accessible in those days, I wouldn't have had to waste my time searching if I had Google.
