I have to admit that Falcom are kinda spamming out Kiseki games now. At least this does have their new engine from what I understand.

Well they've also said that if this game isn't a financial success then there will be no sequal.
Well, I know that the Kiseki series is making bank for them and they're not the biggest company, so I can understand why they want to milk that series as much as they can. And I understand the games are good to excellent. It's just that there are so many characters and so much lore and stuff and that you need to basically play the series from the very first Trails in the Sky up to the latest Hajimari no Kiseki to understand what's up. And I kinda wish they'd close that stuff up and continue with a new subseries in the Legend of Heroes franchise. It just got too convoluted for me, so to speak. But I get that's exactly what most fans like about it.

I’m optimistic, but cautious considering they still haven’t localized Ao no Kiseki nor Zero no Kiseki. Both are releasing on Steam in Asia, but aren’t available worldwide :messenger_loudly_crying:

Come on Falcom, don’t forget about us!!!

I just got Cold Steel III and I’m watching a summary of the first two games on YouTube. No way I’m gonna play four long games in a row for a single storyline. It helps that I played Trails in the Sky and Zero no Kiseki before so I’m familiar with the returning characters and overall lore.

Edit: it seems the cast for this new game is mostly new and there will be few returning characters, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Hopefully players can jump into this new arc without needing prior knowledge of the series.

It was the same with ToCS 1-2, but in third game all 3 arcs starting to merge, i think it would be similar in the new arc, this is interconnected world and story in the end of the day.

We finally in Calvard? I beat Cold Steel 4 and want more. What's the English name for the next one that features 3 and 9 as protagonists? Hopefully that gets an English release next year.

Yeah I just read that as well. This is actually the most exciting thing about kuro no kiseki (for me, anyway). I am also interested in seeing more of this new battle system and the new engine. I don't anticipate a jump like if they were using UE4 or something but mainly I hope for a big step forward in animations and maybe some nice shader effects here and there.

I think it doesn't have official English title yet. It's something like Trails of the Beginning in translation. Yeah i also hope for 2021 western release for Hajimari and Crosbell duology ps4 port.

I hope they keep a turn-based battle system, as it's one of the best in the genre.

Nice. Some of the bigger companies from Square, CDPR to Bethesda can really take note on how Falcon does the NPC’s and world interaction. Legend of heroes trails in the Sky was amazing

Sadly no, Hajimari was last game with turn-based system, and this is my main concern about new games, because they describe new battle system like some ATB shit, and i fucking hate ATB.

That sucks. They had a nice balance with Ys having action RPG combat and Trails with turn-based combat. Why change that now?

I am still about halfway through the first TiTS, I really need to go back and play through these games. They sound like something I would enjoy, but these days it's more about having the time to sit down and devote that much time to a JRPG, especially one with like 6+ games in the series.

ATB was great in old FFs, but in a current-gen 3D RPG? I'm not sure it can work. It might devolve into action-like combat where characters are acting the same time and you can't focus on anyone's particular attack animation. That could make the battles more messy and less impressive visually. In Xenoblade this works because it fully embraces real time action combat, with free movement and cooldown for skills, but that's an entirely different system.

If the Kiseki brand of turn-based combat is over, that would be the unfortunate and untimely end of an era for the genre. While I sort of came to terms with FF going full action with mainline titles, I don't want every RPG series to go the same direction to make itself more accessible to new players. I just don't agree with the assumption that the battle system makes or breaks sales when there are other factors involved.

Looks like they are finally using the new "engine" they've developed for this game. (The new engine look has that excessive bloom - hope they'd turn it down a bit, but supposedly it's more robust in animating characters and their expressions)

It will probably take me a long time (I mean really really long time) to get to this game - as I am to play anything from Sky TC... which I am planning to play starting next year.

So it is turn based, just like a lot of FF entries.
1x

Well, we don't know for sure. ATB is what another commenter had brought up, but Kondo never mentioned the word ATB. He just said there will be action elements added to battles. We don't know what that looks like or how it will be implemented.

Anyone played this game? I'm curious how it is. Probably since favorite series since the old school Squaresoft Final Fantasy games.

They hinted on there won't be any sequel if this is not selling well, seems like hajimari is not doing as well as they hoped and they are giving players a warning that this could be the last.

3D models from Falcom that seem to come from a time past the PS2 era.
I call it progress.

Watch it being their worst title so far.

Still interested in these but the interconnected nature is a bit of a turnoff.
Almost bough Trails of Cold steel 1 during black friday but then I saw a lot of comments saying you miss a lot in the third one if you haven played the other 3000 Trails games.

Some more images

Those 3D models actually look like they could be from the Ps3 era.

I wouldn't say you miss a lot. If you start with Trails of Cold Steel III, just watch the backstory in the main menu and it will catch you up on everything up to Cold Steel III. Cold Steel III is also a good entry point because it adds so many quality of life improvements to the game. It's far more approachable and less cumbersome to play than the first two games which were originally PS3-era games.

Guess I should give it a chance at some point.

I was scared away because I found several threads on various sites with people saying stuff like "Cold Steel 1 and 2 are fine as standalone but you'll really want to play these 6 games before 3"

Play Trails in the Sky FC it's not a long game, if you like it chances are you'll like the rest by varying degree, and there's only 9 games of the Trails sub series.

Look, I've played all the Trails games since Trails in the Sky. I recently went back and played the PS4 versions of CS I and II after finishing CS IV. As much as I loved those games back when I originally played them On PS3, there is no question that they're very dated in 2020. It's not an easy entry point for someone wanting to get into the Trails series right now. That's why I would suggest starting with CS III and watch the backstory. It'll at least give you some context to characters and where the story is at. CS III and IV play very well on modern consoles with a ton of quality of life improvements. If you enjoy what you play, you can always go back to the older games.

I tried the first Trails in the Sky several years ago and didn't really like it.
Played for something like 10-15 hours and even though the combat was pretty fun the story just wasn't very interesting. I've seen people say it gets better later on, but I've never liked this sort of "it gets good after 20 hours!!!" sort of thing. It felt like it missed more of a hook, and the main character (the girl) was annoying.

I bought Cold Steel 1 from a sale last spring, and have now played through four (ToCS 1&2, TiTS FC&SC) and finishing the fifth (TiTS the 3rd). Decided to go from the beginning after it was suggested that ToCS 3 will connect with the previous games more.

And it was a great decision. FC was ok, but SC is my favorite of the whole series so far. 3rd has been good as well, although very different.

Gonna go with the Geofront fan-localizations of the Crosbell arc next before continuing Cold Steel. It’s very time consuming but I’m enjoying the big picture revealing bit by bit.

Trails stories always comes in 2 games, 1st is the setup where you learn about the world, characters and political situation, the 2nd game is where shit goes down, TiTS FC is the setup SC is the payoff, Zero no Kiseki is the setup for the payoff in Ao no Kiseki, Cold Steel 1 and 3 are both setting up the payoff in both CS 2 and 4, TiTS the 3rd and Hajimari both set up the next arc/s.

Even then I'd say Tits is the slowest in the sub series since it had to establish so much about the world and the events that later games will follow.

You need to be in the mood for TiTS FC to really enjoy it and stick with it since SC is Sooooo good.
