I’m not happy about Japan being out on the back burner either. REALLY not happy about it as a matter of fact, but didn’t Japanese gamers kind of turn on Sony first with their strong Nintendo and mobile support and with consoles losing popularity? Again, I don’t like the much weaker Japanese presence on PlayStation, but financially I guess I do understand why they are going in the direction they chose.

How is TLOU2 inferior to the first game? One thing liking the story or characters better, but I feel that the sequel improves in literally all categories. Unless you know, Joel’s.....

1. It is way too early to know what kind of a leader Jim Ryan is going to be over this generation, it hasn't even been two years since he took the head role
2. SIE has been on an amazing streak of almost nonstop good to great games since 2017, but we won't really start to see games that were developed from start to finish under Jim Ryan until late 2021 or sometime in 2022
3. Console gaming in Japan is dying. PS3 sold way less than PS2, PS4 sold still less than PS3, and I have to imagine PS5 will sell less than PS4. It doesn't make sense to invest as much in Japan only type studios or games unless you are big in mobile gaming

I love Japanese games but the OP is horse shit. Japanese gamers are the ones that abandoned Sony and are sticking mostly to Nintendo and mobile. Japan has been becoming more and more irrelevant as the years go by due to their abandonment of the console market. Sony is a console manufacturer and is doing what any company would do in their place. The console market has drifted to the West, we are no longer in the 90s where Japan is the center of the world when it comes to console gaming.

OP needs to get a grip and realize the world is a lot different from where it was 20-30 years ago. Companies need to adapt to an ever changing world especially when it comes to the tech industry, you either adapt or you get left behind. Sony has read the Tea leaves and realized that Japan is no longer in love with gaming consoles like they used to be. They also did gravity rush2 and Concrete Genie (both worthy of being in that list) and now coproduced Demons Souls.
PS3 was, in my opinion at least, a better gen in numbers and variety of exclusives, (in its all, not only Japan Studios) but ps4 wasn't only action/adventure AAAs... it had a lot of variety too and PS5 that it's just starting already gave us Sack Boy and Astro Bot, the DS remake, and has already announced GT7, Ratchet and God of War... Not bad.

Japan shifted long ago, if anything Ps4 generation was way better for Japanese games than PS3, but I guess that you are in your late teens, taking into account your examples of good Japanese games released on PS3 and Vita. Most were not really good and many launches almost at the end of life of both consoles. You should have been there on 2007, no first or third party Japanese games at all. It is a bit sad as we keep hearing people say that graphics are getting diminishing returns (which should make low end/low budget games closer to the AAA productions) and that it is easier and easier to get games up and running and we seem to be taking less and less risks like those games. I hope this changes with PS5, PS4 did not really follow PS3 and PSVita as much as one would expect.

And for record, PS2 sold 24 million consoles in Japan, PS3 10 million and PS4 8 million. It’s extremely clear the market changed for consoles in Japan with the PS360 generation and there was a reason for the focus shift. It’s clear the market in Japan for consoles is gone for all but the hardcore.

I disagree with your reasoning.

First of all, Japan is Playstation 4's second biggest single country market after the United States, in terms of units sold. So, Sony consoles aren't dead in Japan, let alone consoles in general.

Secondly, you're saying the huge drop between PS2 (around 23 million) and PS3 (around 10.5 million) is an indication of a shift in the Japanese market during the PS360 era. However, PS3 have sold about half what PS2 sold globally, so the drop is mostly a global trend rather than something specific to the country.

I think the difference in numbers between PS2, PS3 and PS4 are more a reflection of Sony's market share and level of dominance in the country, rather than the size of the market itself. PS2 was heavily dominating, PS3 and PS4 were/are dominated. Although the market have shrunk to a degree, it's not by anywhere near enough to even begin to call it dead.

Its more frustrating how little faith they seemed to have showed in these titles.

Sure, they produced and funded them, but they barely had any marketing exposure as far as I recall. Not to mention, they spread themselves way too thin by releasing those games across multiple platforms (PS3,PSV,PS4). instead of focusing on one, singular, centralised platform, like they did with the PS1 for instance, to distribute, attract, and establish a sizeable audience/following imo. It seriously seemed like an unfocused, confusing effort and possibly a factor into their underperformance. They generally didn't communicate their Japanese output that well either. It really seemed like a sink-or-swim release each time.

Another thing, to this day, I still honestly can't fathom why Sony didn't take a chance on the Boku no natsuyasumi (my summer vacation) series, or blocked it, overseas. Sure, it seems like a very unique and odd series, it may even seem kind of bizarre in a way, but at the least it deserved a shot in terms of finding a western audience. If the west could find appreciation for something like Ghibli movies then it wouldn't surprise me if Natsuyasumi could've managed to accomplish something equivalent.

Japanese games are my favorite, but they are far from the ONLY thing to play. That's why I love PlayStation - it has the best games from Japan and the rest of the world.

Silly to blame any one person, Jimbo wasn't even in charge when the decision was made to launch PS4 in its home country months later for instance. I also think your paragraphs about launching PS5 are nonsense. So, I'll ignore that.

Personally, one major reason that made Playstation appealing over the years is that it had a good east/west balance, where Xbox is mostly west and Nintendo leans more east. It enjoyed the widest global support from developers big and small in the console space, resulting in diverse libraries that included some of my all time favorites. So I think ignoring Japan and its developers could have significat repercussions outside of Japan.

I have a general preference for game design principles that are more typical of the Japanese, so even when I think about Sony 1st party, my all time favorites would be mostly games made by or collaborated on by their Japanese studios.

I understand being annoyed by them possibly going even heavier in that direction, Playstation have already become a bit too western leaning and the more western Playstation becomes both as a platform and as a game development studio, the less appealing it becomes to me (let alone western with that type of ideology). Hopefully things aren't as bad as they seem or some things revert. However, if not, then sometimes you just wake up one day and realize that thing you like is no longer something you like and you dump it and look somewhere else.

Sorry OP but the critics against Jim Ryan are pure nonsense. Jim Ryan has again proved he is a great executive, he handled the best launch ever for Playstation and that's during a pandemic, he made sure they could ship more PS5s than PS4s, he made sure that the launch was great with big software ready (Miles Morales, Demons Souls, Astrobot, Sackboy) while others are either delaying games or shipping them broken and 2021 will be incredible. All this cannot be stated about their main competitor and it's not like they're amateurs, Jim executed greatly.
If a few people in Japan who got all the chances they wanted over 10-15 years at Sony and wasted them all with commercial bombas have now decided to leave it's not Jim's fault.
