LTTP: Doom Eternal

This game is fucking amazing. Why are people disappointed in it I don’t understand? Brilliant gameplay loop - takes me back to when games took themselves less seriously and focused on the gameplay. And the gameplay in this is imo practically flawless - it gives me the same feeling as the old platformers (demons souls does this too) just how you have to master the mechanics and the repetition. Like, Halo is my favorite franchise probably - they could learn a bit from this. Not in terms of the loop but just in terms of where to focus - playing a halo that feels as good as this couch co op through campaign would be incredible.

Yeah I’m just actually amazed by the game design. Imo the best games of the year in order are Half Life Alyx, and then cyberpunk and doom (for different reasons) - it’s apples to oranges but this might be even better than cyberpunk (which despite its flaws has some genuinely amazing moments I’ve never had in a video game). I feel like this game isn’t getting the respect it deserves. There’s nothing else like it that I’ve played. And I definitely don’t think I’d like the 2016 one more since apparently it doesn’t have some of the mechanics I really love in this.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Most of the criticism I've seen about the game is for not being a "real DOOM", because it has different or new gameplay mechanics like platforming and all the resource management stuff.

I didn't care and even enjoy those aspects, and thought the game was fucking incredible. Had to take breaks after some Slayer Gates because my heart was about to break.

Game has some problems tho, like the lore dumping and cringe story but hey, you can ignore all that and just blow demons up, like I did. The perk that reveal secrets locations is lame as fuck tho.

PS: play 2016 too. It's slower and easier but still a really good game.

I preferred Doom 2016 overall tbh, Eternal is great but personally I found there was just too much going on in most fights, especially the later ones. You've got every different enemy type with their weaknesses, ammo to think about, armour to think about, health to think about, platforming and constantly moving to think about. It just doesn't let up which is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Every fight you win you come out of it feeling like the fuckin' doomslayer, but you're also mentally exhausted too.

This was a great game but it took a while before you got all the tools to make the gameplay excel.

Eternal is better than 2016 in just about every way, but the main thing to know is it is genuinely more hardcore than 2016. People said they wanted it more hardcore than 2016... and then complained when that's exactly what they were given (Giant Bomb, this shade is going in your direction in particular). Eternal really is kind of like "combat chess" I think is what one of the devs called it. And it takes a little longer to "get into" because you have to learn the rules of the action.

If you liked the mindless fun of 2016 (and who doesn't), then Eternal will be a culture shock when you pick it up. Thoughts like "but, but, why can't I just melee them to death?" will make you aggravated at first. But once you learn the rules, or the language of the game, it is soooo much more satisfying to play through.

Others echoed my criticism already; there is too much shit going on, its more of a platform/DMC hybrid at times if that makes any sense. Also kinda heavy on story.

Personally, I was fine with 2016's approach. I just want to blast with the double barrel and rocket launcher and not worry about ammo too much. I also enjoyed 64 a fuck ton.

I’m looking forward to playing it. Have a few games to finish uo, some short palate cleansers to play and then plan on jumping into this on Gamepass.

In short, it just feels like they took a lot of what made Doom (2016) such a joy and then added more and more and more, until it was too top heavy.

We didn’t need yet another way to destroy foes that rewards us with more item drops. Adding an armor drop to the health and ammo drops just seems a bit much. Nobody walked away from Doom saying, “Know what this game could have used more of? Platforming!” And yet, they quadrupled down on that. More focus on better ways to kill specific enemies also detracted from the core run and gun fun... just felt like it got in the way.

The UI, in my opinion, is pretty bad. Everything is on there, alright, but nothing stands out and you have to basically ‘muscle memory’ your way into knowing where to look and when.

Doom Eternal really isn’t a bad game. It’s quite good in many respects. It just seems like a massive disappointment to me after having played the previous entry in the franchise.

I'm not that far into it, but I dislike how much you have to keep track of in the enemy encounters and running out of ammo is annoying.

The overall gameplay is good and unlike others I actually kind of like the platforming.

So far though I like Doom 2016 more.

As a life long Doom Fan who still weekly plays new levels packs I can say that Eternal is a better game than 2016. However, Doom 2016 follows the formula of the original games far closer. Doom Eternal is truly the evolution of the IP and takes the ideas that made it the iconic game it is today and evolves it.

There are some growing pains which is to be expected whenever you are taking something that is resounded as a perfect FPS and start adding things to it.

Its also one of the few games where a lot of the complaints can really come down to people "not playing it right." You can get through a lot of games by skipping mechanics or core pieces of design, even Doom 2016 you can get through it with DBS spamming, but to be truly good at Eternal you cant not use tools you are given. Its a game of chess that requires you to use every piece and if you dont you might find success but you are making it far more difficult on yourself. If you are running out of ammo or are dying constantly it 95 percent of the time on the player not using their pieces right.

Eternal has some weaknesses in the story telling and some of the level design. I think 2016 has the overall better level design but Eternal has the location variety that keep it feeling fresh. It also does takes a bit to really get the game going. It takes a bit too long to give you all the tools it wants you to have. However, once it does, there is no looking back. The final 3 levels of that game are a fucking thrill ride.

Ancient Gods is so far close to a masterpiece. I am looking forward to Part 2.

Started the game last Thursday (Purchased the ultimate edition on steam sale), it so great, pure adrenalin rush, it takes me a while to fall asleep after a session.
I am disappointed with the Multiplayer aspect, wish there were Team death match & Free for all, a coop survival mode would be cool as well.

Fantastic game, finished it a few times. Was on my way to platinum it before i realized at the end that there are shitty online only based trophies tied to the platinum. Devs, please knock that shit off.....not everyone likes playing online

story is ridiculous. Luckily it can be easily ignored.

The core of the game is killing demons that that was awesome. I really liked the dash and other abilities you got. The resource management wasnt my favorite but I eventually got used to it.

The story is an issue for me too. The last game masterfully gave you -just- enough exposition before Doom Guy would just destroy a monitor or something. It was a way to fill you in enough, but while making the protagonist put forward a cheeky ‘don’t give a crap’ attitude towards it all.

Doom Eternal pulls away from that a bit to deliver a story that leads up to its big moments.

Doom had some self awareness and played off of that terrifically. This game takes itself a tad too seriously.

Platforming is nice enough as it adds to the exploration element, but it’s pretty fickle at times.

I really, really didn’t like:
1) the humongous levels. Even the first level just goes on and on and on. Doom 2016’s levels had perfect length.
2) way, way too many upgrades and gadgets. Kudos to those people who can think “oh yeah, I could use the slow drop here and switch to ice grenades in mid-air and then change my main weapon” in a pinch. I can’t. Too much stuff, really.
3) basically, once a new enemy is introduced you’re gonna get it in every subsequent wave. And when one of those fucking turret spiders enters the fray and one or two of those floor-smashing hulks spawn behind you and are upon you before you can even realize the spider is there, you’re already toast. Also, you get hit from fucking everywhere. Punchers, turret spiders, Revenants, pinkies - from every side, from any distance. No respite, not a second to breathe. The game’s pacing just feels off.

”Up to eleven” doesn’t even begin to describe Doom Eternal. This goes up to 20 in no time at all.

Was great for me. Story didn't deliver exactly as I was expecting in the build up promo but the gameplay did. Boss fights could have been a little better.
Yeah have to agree on the boss department. The first 2 minibosses and the first boss (the gladiator) where great. The two at the end (kahn maykr and icon of sin) where kinda lame imo.

I just picked up Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. While I’m playing through 2016 first, I was curious what the graphics looked like in Doom Eternal and good GOD are they gorgeous. Like night and day. I just wanted enough to satisfy my curiosity....back to Doom 2016.

Edit: Playing on PS4

I went in expecting Doom 2016 v 2.0.

This was not that and at first I was annoyed that the game tried so hard toward "forcing" me to use certain weapons on certain enemies.

After about 3 more hours I liked Eternal more than 2016 and after 100% completing the game it's probably my GOTY for 2020 and pretty high on my list of all time.

Low point was probably Kahn Mayker but that was only because my grapple shot was cutting out randomly making the fight impossible to win, and I had to restart the game to fix it. The Icon of Sin was also pretty underwhelming. Cool big boss, but I found after the relentless pounding the rest of the game throws at you constantly it was a pretty easy fight.

absolutely love it. i was a OG DOOM fan back in the day and 2016 was a great return to form. Eternal was like the DOOM II that i always wanted and never got.

Yeah I mean I’m really not paying attention to the story or lore - haven’t read any of it. But the glimpses of the story are more just funny to me than cringey, it’s so stupid and simple but it feels like they’re going for that

Agreed, this is better than the actual doom 2. It at least evolves the gameplay - it’s like a mix of quake and doom (which we’re always pretty much interchangeable imo) and maybe unreal tournament but done to the highest level.

Okay now I’m seeing the criticism - having not played 2016 - I assumed it would also be a version of this type of “combat chess” (very good way of putting it) - but that’s honestly what makes the game great. Just like any souls game - mastering the mechanics you feel like a total badass and it literally teaches you level by level how to be better at the game. Like I’m sure 2016 is great but this is something really special they captured here imo.

. It just doesn't let up which is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness.
Basically this

i tried my ass off to get though it, but I just wasn’t having that much fun. It was just fucking annoying lol. They need to slow waaaaay the fuck down, get rid of glory kills and chainsaws and add a whole bunch more ammo. Just go back to what made the OG Doom’s such timeless classics. All ammo are pick ups, maze like level structure with keys and light puzzles, lots of demons to shoot up... they really need to go back to the drawing board. Doom 2016 was much better IMO. I also think this was made for twitch arena shooter people in mind, which isn’t what doom is for me. It honestly feels more like Quake to me, and I didn’t care for Quake so...

I fucking love Doom Eternal.
I've been waiting for somekind of nextgen update and then I'll buy the DLC.

Also I would like to get Playstation Elite controller or back button attachment for Dualsense. I could play it with Dualshock 4 and it's back button attachment but after Dualsense it feels so cheap.

Doom Eternal needs back buttons.

Yeah I’m seeing a lot of “platforming”, “too much going on/too intense” and the story. The story is dumb as hell but I really don’t feel like they’re taking it seriously like it seems purposefully cheesy. The platforming - I mean the platforming itself isn’t bad but if you don’t like that then I guess okay. The resource management and too much going on? Nah I’m not with anyone on that - the game definitely forces you to play a certain way but I actually think that’s what makes it great - I really don’t know any other games that play like this or require the level of concentration and keeping track of multiple things. The only downside to this game for me is that I wish there were better multiplayer options.

EDIT: side note - the AI for some enemies is actually surprisingly good - they tend to always vary their path slightly so I don’t get too comfortable with them behaving the exact same way each time.

Yeah I enjoyed it for what it was. It felt like some saturday morning cartoon, one that kids would not be allowed to watch. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

There is a little bit of cringe (imo) later on, one particular sequence. But I won't spoil that for you. :]

For me is because he turning Doom less Doom with that ammo departament, monsters weak point and agressive plataform aspect.
But you getting out of ammo is the real annoying part.
2016 Doom still fun for me.
In both new Doom games you get infinite ammo from using the chainsaw...

Just to echo some people here, I like 2016 much better. I couldn't wait to

beat the game once they introduce marauders. Serious fuck that enemy. It wasn't even about being hard, it just ruined the whole flow of combat. Having to wait for him to attach just to get a punch in, fuck that guy.

To each their own. 🤷‍♂️

In no particular order, I didn't like:
  • N64-era platforming
  • uber bright colors
  • general cartoony'ness (like enemies making an 'oh noes' face right before they get glory killed)
  • ammo pinatas
  • limited ammo
  • emphasis on GOTTA GO FAST
  • bad story
I mean yes, to each their own. But I really don’t find any of those things to be actual negatives. N64 had probably the best platformers out of any system - the unreality cartoony look fits the cheesy storyline - total b-movie vibe which is perfect for a game like doom imo. And yeah as I said the resource management and the need to be constantly moving and on your toes is kinda what makes it great for me. Constantly introducing new enemies to make you rethink strategies each subsequent encounter. To me it’s really impressive just in terms of designing a game like this. I can see now how coming from 2016 it may not be as expected - and it took me a minute to get into being good at the game - but I mean I really feel like it deserves some credit even if you just separate it from the doom franchise and look at it as just another FPS.

Depends on what you want from a DOOM. Eternal was basically the Diablo 3 of the series (to me), which I also hated more than I liked. We all have lines we'll draw in the sand when it comes to changes to a beloved series - many may like those changes, but many won't.

Anyone who thinks Doom Eternal was bad because it's too fast, or didn't have enough ammo is THE BIGGEST TLOU FAN THAT HAS EVER LIVED

lmao jokes aside the game is unreal, I haven't finished it yet, but it's so much fun so far. All the complaints about ammo and difficulty, I hate to say it but git gud. The speed is unreal, you have so many options, and having all your enemy strats come together feels amazing, using the shotgun to fire a sticky grenade into a cacodemons mouth to stagger it for a glory kill, using the rocket's triple lock on to kill a mancubus super quickly, using the heavy cannon to disable a revenants cannons before meat hooking him to death with the super shotgun, it all feels unreal. The dash adds so much to this game, being able to fly though the air to glory kill an airborne demon, dashing away from a huge mob of enemies to recover and figure out your next move, or even just a fun way to get around the map. I found myself using the equipments way more too, with grenades and napalm and shit. Unreal fucking game. So much fun, and I won't have to grind those fucking rune upgrades for the Platinum like I did in 2016, which is also a fucking kickass game. Doom Eternal is a fucking video game.

I've seen some people mention that having enemy weak points is overkill and shooting them is basically required, but that's not the case at all. I just beat the game on Ultra-Violence without ever once trying to shoot a weak point. So if they are required to shoot, then it would have to be on the highest difficulty I've yet to play (Nightmare). People mention the need to sticky grenade the Cacodemon or shoot the Arachnotron's turret, but I always just kill them normally.

I tend to focus more on rotating between the flamethrower, chainsaw, and grenades. If you're managing that loop well and making sure to stay on the move via the dash, you're golden. But again, I still need to play Nightmare...

I'll be dead honest, I never played them apart from MW3 multiplayer with my brother. I have a friends old copy of COD4 for PS3 lying around, I might see whats up when I get a new PS3 as my old one bit the dust a few months ago. I never played Halo campaigns but Halo 2 is a go to for a fun multiplayer game when I have people over lol.

I mean, I’m not very good at video games, but I couldn’t even beat some of Eternals levels on the lowest difficulty setting. And I constantly got owned by those atronochs without hitting their weak points. I guess if this is the way doom is heading, then I’m out, because that isn’t fun to me. Sucks to be me I guess... and everyone else who had the same complaints as me.

The game is just out of balance imo. Never played a video game where I couldn’t even handle it on the lowest difficulty. I really hope they find a way to bring myself and others like me back to Doom with the next installment

I just like getting in there and blowing shit up, getting in a vehicle and dive bombing it straight into the enemy base or trying to run over the enemy with a four wheeler lol. It was guns a blazin explosion crazyness, but it didn’t feel overwhelming and annoying like eternaldoes to me. But CoD, Halo and Eternal are all wildly different shooters. I wouldn’t like Eternal even if it wasn’t a doom game. It’s just way too much for me
