Do we have any "next big thing" games on the horizon?

If "next big thing" is defined as the type of game that hits once every 5 or so years. The kind of game that alters the trajectory of game development. The kind of game that broadens the game buying market.

The last "next big thing" games:

PUBG
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Fortnite

Lesser "next big thing" games:

Animal Crossing New Horizons
Fall Guys
Among Us

Is there anything coming out in the next couple of years you think could be the next big thing?

My only votes would be Horizon Forbidden West and Breath of the Wild II. Both Guerilla Games and Nintendo tend to produce special games when given enough time.

Nothing I guess. Lots of cool games coming out on all platforms, but nothing seems revolutionary in any sense.

Big companies despise taking risks, so I don't expect anything speciall that's not some crazy indie title out of nowhere.

Come on, pick one! One game you think the industry is sleeping on in terms of potential impact.

I'd also say Beyond Good and Evil 2...if it's still in development.

Mmmh haha dunno man, maybe the next big thing from Valve? They took some risks making a big VR game like HL Alyx, so maybe their next project is as risky and revolutionary as the previous one. That is, if they are making something and not just counting money. :goog_relieved:

VR social media platforms in the next decade, is my bet
Something like VRChat, but more popular among the general public? Kinda scary ngl.

Pretty much, VR chat itself is already surprisingly popular for a mainly VR game, and the user base has been slowly growing too.

Personally, i think it'd still be more healthy than current social media.
I can see it yeah, at some point people would get bored of the current social media, and if VR ends up getting more mainstream (and cheap) I can really see it as a substitute.

Kinda like that chapter of Black Mirror (the second one?), where people where more worried about customizing their virtual avatar than their real clothes or living environment.

And if we reeeaally wanna go crazy with the predictions, its possible to imagine a social media that mixes VR and AR/MR.

You could walk around a virtual version of a city that'd be sobreposed with the real thing, meaning people in town who were also logged in could see both real and virtual things, including other users who aren't present physically.

How can Horizon FW be next big thing when it’s just a sequel to already formulaic game that borrowed from many others to make itself great. Doesn’t make sense.

Maybe Destruction All Stars takes some of that Rocket League thunder, you never know.

Guerilla Games has been given lots of time to make a game twice. Their two best games...

Killzone 2
Horizon Zero Dawn

All their other games had short dev cycles.

Forbidden West is getting 4.5 years. Their studio blew up in size. They may have learned from Breath of the Wild. They might be creating a multiplayer component.

Also, I was desperate and I couldn't think of any other "next big thing" games.

Interesting perspective....but I fail to see how Zelda BOTW "broadened" the gaming market or altered the trajectory of game design. Are there many developers copying or introducing concepts and gameplay unique to BOTW into their games? And honestly, judging from that list of games, I really don't give a damn of these so-called "big games" seein from such a narrow perspective. If that's where the market is going, well, that's dreadful. For my taste, anyway.

They will somehow manage to make it even duller and more “streamlined” (so shallow) than Oblivion and Skyrim.
At this point they should just fully concentrate on the combat system and streamline everything unnecessary (like skills) out of the game. I'd love it if Bethesda just dropped their remaining bs RPG elements entirely and made an open-world action-adventure game with actually engaging combat and maybe some magic.

I included Breath of the Wild for a bunch of reasons.

It sold over 20 million copies which is absurd considering it's single player, on a device that's "only" sold 70 million units, Nintendo doesn't discount games, it got a 97 Metacritic, and was universally praised as fundementally changing open world games design.

Genshin Impact and Immortals Fynix Rising are the two games that released recently that were clearly inspired by Breath of the Wild. Games today typically take 3+ years to make so I expect the games inspired by BotW to just now start releasing.

I'm a multiplayer gamer that thinks the single player industry is mostly garbage...but I respect the hell out of Nintendo for making that game.

No. The industry is creatively bankrupt. Maybe factions could become a big thing if it's free to play
A first party console-exclusive third person multiplayer only game from a divisive franchise? Has about as much chance of landing well as Halo Infinite's single player.

To the topic at hand, I don't think there's a clear set of "next big things" yet. But, the generation has just started. Wait another E3 or so, and we'll some of the big next gen plays.

tlou2 factions is one that should prob go to pc to expand audience. rocket league wasn't on xbox at first, pubg was on pc for the longest etc etc..

IMO what games need to focus on next-gen is dynamic and destructible environments.. too many of these games are so static as fuck!!

Multiplayer gamers don't care about "divisive franchises". We want games with interesting mechanics full stop. Fortnite, League, Rocket League, Rust etc...all dumb as f*** franchises. The franchise is meaningless in multiplayer games.

That's some single player gamer **** right there.

What time is it?
Since Metal Gear is dead, the next nearest thing to get me hyped is Ueda's next project and after TLG, I'm excited but not over the moon.

I'm mostly looking forward for Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring.
Beside that, hoping to see confirmation soon of XCOM 3 (War of the Chosen is my personal game of the generation) and Warhammer Total War 3.
Also, Age of Empire 4, please.

It’s going to be something new and not something we can already abbreviate and put a number behind.
So not: BOTW, HZD, GT, FF, GoW, MP, TES etc
But maybe: Starfield, the Hogwarts game, Indiana Jones, but most likely it’ll be something unexpected we have no idea about right now.

A couple of your games don’t fit the bill, you could just have said what’s the next game that could blow up, also how is Among Us (and Fall Guys to a lesser extent) in the “lesser” category when it appears to be the biggest game in the world atm?

TBF I think AC is actually a biggest thing than Zelda right now... Next one, if MS plays it well, can be Halo 6 multiplayer due to XSS and Gamepass... It will be big but by how much?

But it's probably gonna be a pokemon remake since we didn't get one last year

Goodbye Volcano High.
Damn I only remember this game's name because of GAF, no kidding

If knowing the next big thing on the horizon was as simple and easy as asking the question in a forum every game company would be posting non stop here. Its predicting the future and so unless you have a almanac from the future nobody will truly know until it hits.

In terms of F2P Destruction Allstars has the potential, starting next month.

As the next major, this year release it should easily go for Horizon Forbidden West, while God of War Ragnarok is the next big thing in 2022.

Who knows. I was kinda shocked animal crossing became the next big thing this year. Well either way I'm hoping the next big thing is scifi/fantasy related. Destiny gave it a shot but they failed at the starting line and have simply been trucking along. Now the next attempt was Cyberpunk and was suppose to kick off the scifi craze but like yeah that didn't pan out quite right. I wouldn't be surprise if the next big thing was based on some 80s nostalgia type era since we do have that indiana jones game coming and the stranger things was a hit.
