Without watching or reading other comments I bet 10 $ that this is someone born after 2000 who's first contact with video games was a Pewdiepie video or something.

I am not a Mario fan and I never had a N64 when I grew up but this is the most stupid name of a youtube video I have ever seen.

Just waiting for the "Crash Bandicoot sucks compared to Minecraft" video soon.

I don't like it enough to play it for any significant amount of time. So it must be a bad game, perfectly logic (I'm actually not a fan, but I can see why people put Mario 64 on a pedestal).

The game would benefit from a better camera system, but given the N64 controller and the year of release it's pretty impressive as it is.

Honestly the game wasn't really that good when it first came out, it only really stood-out sales and critical wise in North America due to a massive paid marketing and paid-review campaign filled with intense artificial press hype, in order to make up for the N64 entering late. That strategy didn't really work anywhere else where bundling was the only feasible way to get that game out in mass. Largely because the collectathon platformers weren't as popular as traditional platform games outside of North America and to a lesser extend the United Kingdom.

Also, it helped that other countries didn't pretend computers didn't exist which already had games with those archaic camera systems beforehand. Technically even some early PS games did that.

Goldeneye in comparison actually attracted mass attention almost entirely on its own appeal. It wasn't packaged nearly as much with the N64 console yet outsold or came close to outselling Mario 64 in every country the N64 sold at least reasonably well in, outside of Japan for obvious reasons.

Every other Mario game after 64 was never able to hook me like 64 did. Yes, even Galaxy 1/2 (blasphemy, I know). I could only play a couple of levels before turning the games off out of boredom.

I replayed SM64 thanks to the PC port, and still enjoy the game quite a bit. The heavier controls feel just right to me, newer Mario games feel a bit floaty in comparison. And the surreal/abstract (even downright creepy sometimes) artstyle is something I would like to see in a new Mario game instead of the same boring cutesy thing they have going on.

Nostalgia? Perhaps, but in my personal experience I can't replay old games on nostalgia alone for long.

Vexx was better. Never got any credit. Took everything SM64 did and I proved it, and remains a forgotten gem on Xbox/PS2/GCN. Better platforming, level design, far improved combat, camera, etc

The camera is the worst part of the game, but controlling mario still holds up. For a very bad game that doesn't hold up, try pokemon sword even though it's only 1 year old. It was dated at release. Because it is shit.

I think Super Mario 64 has aged fine. I played it a couple of years ago, and still had a lot of fun with it. Of course a lot of it is nostalgia, but they did a lot of influential things with it. It's a really important game.

Hey if the new generation think it sucks, Id understand. Its the same if someone would tell me how Wolfenstein3D is an awesome shooter while I grew up on Quake 3. For us that played the game when it came out it was a revolution and because of our fond memories, we know of its shortcomings compared to today but we also remember how it played so we accept it as normal. I loved Need For Speed 3 as my favorite NFS. Now I put it on, worst controls in a racer ever...its ridiculously bad. But it has nostalgic hold over me so Id still say its an awesome game. Wheres a kid growing up on Forza Horizon would think im on drugs for liking NFS3.

amazing game from start to finish, yeah the camera wasn't great but the live design and the skill involved when you play was amazing. one of the best games ever made

Yes it's overrated but it's still an ok/good game imo.

Anyway, hope the youtuber has a good flameshield because these nintendo fanboys are rabid.

While Mario 64's controls aren't as crisp or immediately intuitive as more recent games (especially Odyssey) it still plays very well to this day.

the Leveldesign was clearly inspired by the fact that 3D is a new thing so many ideas in the game play with the fact that we are now playing in 3D.

so imo Mario 64 is still a very good game even tho you can feel that it was one of the first games trying to bring complex platforming into the 3D world

Youngling hating old game... Predictable.

People that complains about classic older games are just dishonest or ignorant.

Let's be honest Mario is stupid slippery. Why does Nintendo make Mario controls so slippery in platforming?
