They should cancel last gen versions of GOW Ragnorak and HZD Forbidden West

I'm sure those 2 studios have enough funds/manpower/publisher support to make the games fully use ps5 hardware/features and after that rescale and edit maps (if needed) to hide loadings, reduce number of enemies on screen and make encounters wave based (if needed), reduce graphic detail and effects, etc for the ps4 version.

As long as the ps5 is the primary dev focus, no harm in making ps4 versions.
At a time where nobody can find a ps5 to buy, I doubt last gen is going to be dropped. Maybe next year...

Nope, they shouldn’t. First because they announced Horizon 2 for PS4 already, second because business, there is not enough PS5 for AAA being profitable. At least you want get a lesser game proyected to 4-5 million of sales instead 15
stupid sony making motorstorm, uncharted, killzone 2, god of war 3 ps3 exclusive. What where they thinking, leaving monies on table.. should have consulted with neogafs official sony playstation shareholders first.

Do you guys want them to not capitalize on the last gen consoles for the next couple of years or...?

The jump between PS2 and PS3 was insane vs. the literal computer architecture of consoles currently. It's simple, current gen alongside mid gen upgrades can still run these games so might as well capitalize on PS4 sales especially when it's at 100 million and Nintendo is destroying everyone.

All of those games you listed were new IP's at the time so Sony was able to risk putting them on the low selling PS3 in its early years.

It’ll still be hard to even find a ps5 all year and cross gen games can still sell more on ps4. I’m looking forward to playing HZD2 on ps4 at this point.

I agree. That's why GT7 is pretty much the only game I give a shit about this year. Nothin but next gen baby.

Why would they throw several years of work to fit the games onto PS4 out the window?

I dont get the ”they should make it PS5 exclusive”-take. The games have been in development several years, you want them to throw it out and start all over again? Because thats what they would have to do to make it take advantage of the PS5 hardware from top to bottom.

I rather get 2-3 games from these devs this generation than 1-2.

These are two highly anticipated sequels to popular first party Sony games and they should both be showcases of what the PS5 can do. They should push the release dates to 2022 and really use the full power of the PS5. HZD was a showcase of what the PS4 pro could do and the sequel could be the same thing for the new gen console and the sequel to GOW could be as well. Don't make the same mistake CDPR did and release versions that are vastly inferior on last gen consoles.
This crap again? This " a game "can't be next gen" if there is a version or port to the old console? People need to rethink what actually makes a game "next gen" before making statements like this. There's a difference between making versions for multiple platforms vs. only Sony platforms.

Don't conflate the two scenarios. CDPR released their game too early for the old consoles. You really think Sony would make that mistake? People had other problems with cyberpunk beyond only the performance issues on low end hardware. The game was simply over promised (despite being pretty damn good despite its flaws).

It’ll be another The Last Guardian situation probably. The games will run like a nightmare on the base PS4.

nah the games will run grand on the base PS4, this isnt CDPR ffs, this is Sony's top tier studios and they know how to eek out every last drop from the PS4, its just a pity that they are on the base units as i would've love to see these games let loose on the PS5 but i guess we need to wait for Part3 of each to see what the PS5 can truly do with the license, until then hopefully NaughtyDog are working exclusively on PS5 so we can see what the unit is properly capable off.

The difference will be substantial between both versions. Miles morales with instant load times is almost unplayable on PS4. The best way to play the vision of that studio's title is going to be on PS5 for sure. If they go open world more with God of war expect lots of loading and intermedium traveling to mask the load times.

But will be instant on PS5.

Honestly people here over react.

Those games are ostensibly coming out in the next 9-12 months.

It's not like cancelling the old-gen versions NOW would change a thing for the PS5 versions. Supporting older hardware can have an impact on things like the engine configuration, or general game design and mechanics, all things that have must have been set in stone for a while by now.

Dang this is the first time I'm hearing this...

any hardware specific advancements that specifically need the super fast load speeds can't be used now, right? Like the stuff we saw with ratchet and clank jumping different worlds instantly. This just sounds like it's hampering the experience and takes away from the PS5 version. Instead of a next gen game, you'll get a past gen game and a next gen remastered-esque version.

The Last Guardian was a first party title too and they fucked it up badly performance wise.

Hey wait a minute, GoW2 (the fucking GOAT of sequels) was a PS2 exclusive AFTER PS3 released... I'm okay with this! But still bummed the ps5 version would be hamstrung by certain things.

How do you compare a game designed from ground up for a specific architecture and by some studios who knows that architecture from inside out and know how to scope a game for that system with a 3rd party, mainly focused on PC....

Sony studios knows if they put 3 trees more in the game, the performance will tank, so that's why they are so well optimized...

No. I want something interesting, exclusive and new to play on my PS5 that uses PS5 features such as quick load times and better FPS. These games will have that even if they are cross gen.

If we get less games now, my PS5 will be like my PS5 and gather dust before being sold.

When you consider how many of the next gen consoles were bought by scalpers, it makes perfect sense from a business perspective as to why they're still trying to sell on last gen. Also even if there wasn't a scalping issue, it's still an opportunity to make more money. But the scalping situation reaaaally doesn't help. I still haven't gotten my hands on a PS5, and I've been trying.

I'm still curious on the flying mechanic for HZD that wasn't possible on PS4 🤔 Now if the game is cross-gen, would that mechanic not be present in the sequel either?

I dont think they will produce enough ps5’s to sell this year in order to justify cancelling the ps4 versions. There are a lot of ps4’s out there. Next year or 2023 might be the time for more next gen exclusives, but for now, due to endless supply chain choke-holds, its not feasible.

Admittedly, i am bummed that things like flying mounts probably wont make the cut because of
The ps4’s slow cpu

probably like uncharted souped up cutscenes that is offline rendered using a ps5, and played back in .mov form.
so it is closer to cgi than realtime imo.

because we have yet to see such details density in a game or realtime demo running that smooth.
Stop spreading bullshit.

Sony hasn't used offline renders since the PS3. Every cutscene they use now, especially ND are in-engine running in real time. It saves time, file size, money and is more immersive depending on the gear and shaders (bruises, dirt, blood) from combat.

Canceling the PS4 versions doesn't necessarily mean it changes anything significant for the PS5 versions. Both games are already deep in development.

Flat out lies and purposefully spreading misinformation like this should result in bans.

Eh, thats what i meant, using in-engine but rendered offline at unplayable fps and composite into a video form..

They are not rendered offline. They are rendered in real time using the same engine that you play the game with. Some even allow you to move the camera in those instances, and even use photomode. GoW was seamless with no cuts due to this.

They are not going to make two completely different games, that would be a waste of resources. It actually doesn't make sense to make the PS5 the primary because most of the money will be made selling the PS4 editions for right now because PS4 has a bigger install base and Sony can't produce more PS5's to sell at the moment.

Exactly.... This 100% what is happening ^

The PS5 versions will just be enhanced versions of the PS4 game, that is basically what Miles Morales is on PS5. Its basically the PS4 version but with enhanced graphics, fps and load times but the game would be so much more if it was developed from the ground up for PS5 ..... Spiderman 2 will be amazing most likely because its probably going to be a full next gen game.

No way they will cancel last gen. Sony will sell more copies on the PS4 then the PS5...

No no the "you'll sell more copys" argument is only used by Sony fanboys when it's about MS NEEDING it! Don't you know the truth constantly changes to whatever a Sony fanboy needs it to be to justify his horrible war posts from 2018?

As others have said, it's too late to cancel now.

But let's have some nuance in this discussion. We all know there is a balance to be had between supporting old hardware and supporting new hardware.
Compared to previous generations, Sony isn't doing enough to support new consoles in it's first few years, at least from the perspective we have now.
"We believe in generations (as opposed to Xbox)."
Sony has milked the last generation well. They've sold their hardcore customers expensive new machines, and they should have put their money where their mouth is when it comes to new games.

It's still not rendered offline or played back via video file. It is rendered in-engine in real time. They can push the engine more without other logic systems running for gameplay, obviously, but pre-rendered it is not.

What you see is what they were capable of pushing out of that 1.84TF box with a Jaguar.

Nope, OP predicts failure based on the case of a dishonest developer like CDPR.

Those are excllusive IPs with two great games made on the PS4 before so learning curve is done so Sony just need to deliver a grear story on both and maybe some graphic improvements on PS4.

Current base users of PS4 is huge compared to PS5 and will keep the same all 2021 so Sony would lose a lot money if they release only a PS5 version.

Finally never preorder..specially on singleplayer games where you can enjoy them weeks or months later. I got GOW for PS4 more than year after release, and unless you get spoiled the experience is the same compared to a release purchase.

Unfortunately, the damage is done. Canceling the last gen versions would only free up cycles for content creation and polish.
Any areas of design that are held back by having to cater to what is and isn't possible on last gen hardware is already very much engrained in both games at this point.

It's gonna mostly look like a PS4 game anyway? So why not release it on both? Stop being delusional.

Personally I would love them to be next gen only exclusives but from an educated business perspective I don't think it would be wise considering these games are due to be released early in the next gen(current gen) cycle as there is still low adoption of the console.
Especially since most of the PS5 consoles sold are not currently in the hands of those who will buy games for those consoles. Scalpers.

Both GoW & HZD are games that are very limited in scope and not that ambitious, unlike what happened with CDPR, plus they just focus on PS4 first and scale it up lightly afterwards (higher res, higher fps etc). No reason to worry about it. It's clear given the PS5 shortages cross-gen is basically guaranteed for the first 2 years easily, and likely to continue into the 3rd.

Releasing last gen versions is always an interesting move, I appreciated the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild and the PS4 version of Valhalla but one day I would like to see an immediate kill to all last gen consoles at launch.
