What options do we have for PS5 Storage?

I have half of CoD BO installed and jesus does this game take up the space on my Digital console, is there going to be a SSD availible at any point soon to upgrade to?

I suppose my options could be to install any PS4 games on an external drive, but that defeats the purpose of using the updated versions of these games at times

Nothing announced yet on PS5 expansion. For PS4 games, I don't think there is any reason not to store than on external drives other than some slightly longer load times.

I thought they said it would happen this summer? Could be wrong.

I want to find a good deal on an external ssd for PS4 games.

As others said, none unfortunately. I'll be first in line when they do become available though.

I bit the bullet and now use an external for PS4. It was very liberating. I now have 50+ PS4 games available to play on my PS5.
And most of the internal SSD is free for when some PS5 games do arrive.

Nothing because apparently microsoft made the mistake of going proprietory and sony made the best move by allowing 3rd parties to make extra storage options....and we are still waiting on sony to unlock the feature via firmware.

Having no option but to pay premium prices for the duration of a generation just so that you can have 6-9 months of feature "bragging rights" over the competition.

Seems like a reasonable trade off to me. We shall remember this period fondly.

let's see and wait in what price range the SSDs will be that will be supported on PS5

Yes.

And what will be even more interesting is doing a price comparison in 2-3 years. That's when the real benefits of non proprietary solutions start to kick in, as the technology matures, wider demand increases and economies of scale starts kicking in.

the way Microsoft worded it they might open up the production of their expansion cards to more manufacturers down the line. so if that happens these prices will go down as well. and maybe we will even see some pushing for higher speeds. All they have to do is release a minimum spec that manufacturerers need to meat and then let them do what they want with it.

also storage will get cheaper on both. back on the 360 it started with a 100€ 20GB HDD and ended with 500GB for 100€. so 25x the storage space for the same price over the lifespan of the system. and the prices for the 500GB fell soon after

Someone tweet Mark Cerny for an answer.

A year ago during the reveal he was big on PC SSDs "this fall" being fast enough to hook up to a PS5.

It's now March. So where are they?
I don’t think it’s that the drives available aren’t fast enough tbh... More that the ‘suffocating coffin’ design is a fire hazard :messenger_tears_of_joy:

They have to figure that out before they can turn this on.

I feel like there was some guy banging a drum that these consoles weren’t shipping with enough space for a while...

As long as the the officially supported drives come this year I will be happy (enough). Space is definitely tight... but not a major issue for me yet.

Hopefully they are over 1TB so we can buy once and cry once (over cost).

Knowing that your expansion drive is indistinguishable from the internal drive and won't perform erratically ... priceless.

There is no reason to keep PS4 games on internal storage, even if they are updated. The PS5 is smart enough to store native PS5 games internally and put the rest on an external.

There’s no issues in even more cramped airflow less gaming laptops as thin as iMacs now. Just bought one a little over a month ago. It’s literally a sandwich.

Fuddy, that.

the issue is that the SSD has to run at certain speeds, and if it gets hot it will throttle.

Prices of Seagate SSDs will come down and there is nothing stopping MS from adding support for third party NVMe SSDs in future

If this were ms, this thread would be 50 pages long burning ms at the stake for not delivering. It's sony so it's OK there is still zero options and very little complaint.
What is there to say? Those who care a lot about this are still sitting on the fence. Like me. I already have my internal 1TB and 1TB expansion card mostly filled up on Series X. Won’t buy a PS5 until they’ve upgraded the SSD or have a functional solution for external storage.

I mean Xbox Solution is annoying, but at least they provide an option

And then you woke up and realized that there will be multiple options terms of ssd support for the Series consoles coming soon.

What options, you mean for the manufacturer? What option do you have other than an xbox SSD?

On topic it's ridiculous that we have no SSD options but if they are going to use SSDs as some kind of ram pak from the N64 era I understand if they need to be certified. Sony botched it for release big time and they may even get greedy and release Sony only SSDs. Oh well don't want to buy an expensive SSD in this shortage anyway. I'll wait until the market stabilises and prices come down. Mostly have PS4 games for now anyway.

What time is it?
They need an archiving solution for PS5 games to external storage. I understand we wouldn't be able to play those games until migrated back to internal storage but data caps exist and deleting/re-downloading is a terrible strategy.

It’s a bit of a shit show that this isn’t available yet, delete it games and having to redo load them can be a pain in the ass. Hopefully this will be sorted by the time i got my ps5 in a month or 2

So you are telling me there will be different form factors for the proprietary slot?
That wording does not reassure me of anything. To me it seems like he only said this vague statement to Major Nelson when there was talk about their proprietary slots. Seems like he is saying there are different options, form factors and sizes and they went with what they have. There are options in terms of external drives, different sizes but how exactly are they going to change the proprietary port? How will a standard nvme stick out of the console. And why the proprietary slot then? Seems like the usual future faking to me. There will be options, different sizes maybe even different manufacturers but it will still be an xbox drive licenced and sold by MS for their proprietary slot.

The price will fall or you will get more storage for the same price but the reality is that it still won't be competitive with the standard drives on the market. The Xbox 360 drives you referenced were still expensive for the amount of capacity (500gb) and speed of drive (5400rpm) on offer.

Just to give you some examples:

Yeh I'll believe it when I see it. Delusions that proprietary doesn't mean proprietary are cute.

Knowing that your expansion drive is indistinguishable from the internal drive and won't perform erratically ... priceless.

They should have charged you more then in that case. If I'm Microsoft reading this thread I'm thinking I've missed an opportunity.

Yeah, but it was very easy to make it yourself with the 360 firmware. That was well known. Maybe it will be possible again, maybe 3rd parties are coming. We will see.

I'm talking about the proprietary external add-on drive. This one:

And then later in the generation these:

If you are happy to tear down the proprietary enclosures and replace the drive with your own (that you've had to install firmware on, so requires a computer along with some know-how) then you're making a mockery of the "convenience" factor that these proprietary drives are supposed to offer.

Sounds like a lot more work to me than just simply buying an off the shelf drive that is the correct speed and size and then installing it.

A quick Google search throws up this:

"Easy" you say?

I'm the average Joe and it was super easy. Also there were stores that could make this for you, i think it was like 10 bucks.

TBH so far the compression seems to be working exactly as intended, more and more newer games are seeing a noticeable size decrease compared to PS4/XB/PC versions, meaning those 800GB will be able to store the same amount of games as XSX 1TB, if not even more, and I think it's safe to say the trend will only improve. Granted, older titles like the mentioned CoD will most likely never receive an update to take advantage of the said compression, but the FW update unlocking the expandable SSD slot is reportedly arriving quite soon.
