I miss Shawn. Not because of this Jason shit, I think its a common practice in the industry.

I miss Shawn because he actually seemed to care about Playstation and gaming and games. Jim Ryan just comes off as an uninformed suit with zero interest in anything besides the numbers.

Jim Ryan didn't replace Shawn Layden... FFS!

Jim Ryan replaced Andrew House as Playstation boss.

Shawn was boss of PS's North American division, while Jim lead PS Euro.

Shawn left PS for reasons we have no knowledge of. Although it could have been because he lost out to Jim for House's role.

I keep seeing this but Andrew House was the CEO of Playstation lol. Shawn was the head of just SCEA.

So it was Kaz Hirai until 2011, then Andrew House until 2017 then John Kodera who was quickly replaced by Jim Ryan in just over a year.

Shawn was unceremoniously let go by Jim though along with Shu who was demoted from head of WorldWide studios to head of fucking indies.

Shawn and Jack Tretton were just SCEA heads. And id say all of these guys had blood on their hands. Evolution Studios, Incognito, Zipper, GG Cambridge, Liverpool studio were all shutdown under their watch. Though most of them were european studios under Jim Ryan's leadership who took over as Sony's European CEO in 2012 i believe.

The one thing with these guys was that while they were killing studios, they were heavily investing in 2nd party studio. Shu made it a mission to get Bloodborne after fucking over Demon Souls back in 2009. and had Demon Souls remade. Andrew House snatched up Kojima literally the day his Konami fired him. Jim let him go talk to Stadia and Microsoft a year and a half after he shipped GOTY 2019. they went out and got a bunch of third party studios to make PS4 games for IPs they owned. Jim is spending millions on third party IPs and games that wouldve come out on PS5 anyway. Death Loop and FF16 arent real exclusives. They are just games hes paying to keep off other platform. They dont offer more value.

I hated The Order, but id rather they go back and give RAD money to make The Order 2 than waste money on Death Loop, FF16 and Project Athia. I dont think Zenimax or Square Enix are struggling to make these games.

In terms of potential revenue and profit potential this is one the few good moves theyre making lately if they pull it off and quite frankly should have happened awhile ago. I know its not exciting but mobile gaming is huge.

It looks to me Sony are scrabbling to catch up, Japan is saturated with mobile games and its dominance is the main contributing factor to console game sales being so weak in Japan..... But its still sad to see.

They moved their headquarts to California to focus on western games and now Nintendo is crushing them with the switch in Japan. Then Microsoft decided to buy all independent western studios plus bethesda and who knows who else. And sony is just sitting there watching the world pass them by remaking the last of us trying to relive 2013 all over again. Thats how i see it.

Meanwhile, the PS5 is the fastest selling console in every territory all the while being out of stock basically everywhere since release.

yeah, they have always had a mobile division. this isnt new.

Yep. It's bizarre because a lot of Japanese studios saw big success this gen. Monster hunter was huge. RE and DMC games had their fastest selling games in their respective franchises. From Software became a true AAA studio. Kojima had two of the best games of last gen himself.

You see that and you think you need to downsize your Japan studio? how?

I dont even mind them rebuilding their headquarters in the U.S. Silicon Valley is where its at and if Sony wants to be taken seriously as a tech company they need to be there. I was talking to my friends about how all the big entertainment companies are U.S based. Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Disney+, Tesla. Japan has been left behind, and tbh same is true for Europe. So Sony needs to be here.

But Sony cant be here by closing studios, and turning them into support studios. I dont particularly care for acquisitions just for the sake of keeping games off other platforms. Bethesda games wouldve come to both consoles regardless. However, Sony let so many western studios go the last decade or so that it makes no sense for them to move their HQ to the U.S. Like who are you managing from there? SSM, ND and Sucker Punch?

They shouldve gone after Ready At Dawn despite the poor reception of The Order. Tell them to get their shit together and make more games like PSP GoWs. Should have built second studios, not just teams for ND guys like Bruce Straley and Amy Hennings. Stig was allowed to go Respawn. He shouldve been given his own team. Rebuild Zipper. Rebuild Incognito. Get those FPS devs from GG and Insomniac a game. How do you not have a single FPS game for your most successful console in an era where FPS and online shooters were bigger than ever.

Warhawk, MAG, Socom, Resistance, Killzone. So much multiplayer experience. Wasted all gen on cinematic third party games. They couldve had their own Fortnite or Warzone.

I hear ya man, youre preaching to the choir lol. The reality is I think us forum goers care ALOT more about gaming than these executives do. To us its a hobby, to them its a means to an end to make money. Thats it.

You say all this yet Playstation was extremely successful with arguably ps3 and definitely ps4. I think they know their brand and are doubling down on it.

how are they doubling down by closing studios, ending relationships with 2nd and 3rd party studios, and releasing fewer games than ever before?

instead of doubling down, id say they are halving down.

Sony is lucky they still have exclusives like God Of War, Gran Turismo, Guilty Gear, Final Fantasy, just to name those. Also imo Playstation has the best controller. Also i don't like playing on PC so those PC porting won't change anything for me, tho there will be people that usually buy playstations console but now they won't and just wait for the games to come on PC.

Point is despite all those Jimbo shitty decisions playstation is still by far the best place to play (in my opinion at least), hey Microsoft can we have some worthy competition FFS please.

its called restructuring every company does it. Just because a project is cancelled doesn't mean their isnt another new project being created. This happens all the time in this industry.

I’m just about at the end of Days gone.

There’s no need for No 2. This game covered it all - in fact I think it was way too long.

Yes fun to play but they need to learn from Tsushima - keep it focused and leave the audience wanting more. This was the opposite of that - at this point (about 20
Mins from the end of the story - yes really) I’ve had my fun with this world and these characters and I don’t want more.

Oh and to put this in context - I love bikes and have a HD, Ducati and BMW and for media I enjoyed the first season or two of SoA but beyond that endured it.

The only reason I have seen Days Gone through is because I love biking. Soooo yeah. This game doesn’t need a sequel right now and maybe never. IMO neither does TLOU. The zombie stuff is done and dusted for a good few years.
Well I don't want to spoil but somethings happen at the end that makes Days Gone 2 necessary. Those NEO stuff were also interesting.

PS5 Is an Amazing Fit for Horror, Its Tech Contributes Hugely to Immersion, Says RE Village Director

I feel like the possibilities of what I can express in a game have been expanded. Immersion is the most important aspect of a horror game, and I think that the PS5’s technology contributes hugely to creating an improved sense of immersion. Using the fast-loading SSD, we’ve been able to let players explore the village environment seamlessly while experiencing 3D audio that gives a sense of a multilayered environment. During combat scenes, they’ll feel the responsiveness of their weapons through the adaptive triggers.
I was 13 when I played the original Resident Evil, and it was so scary that not only did I have to stop playing, but I had to turn the box around so that I wouldn’t see the huge scary eyeball on the cover. I want today’s players to experience the fear I felt back then using all the advances in technology that have happened since the first game was released and having developed Resident Evil Village with that goal in mind, I can safely say that the PS5 hardware is an amazing fit for horror games.
For a game like Resident Evil Village, where exploration is a key pillar of the gameplay, I would say the 3D audio. You can already experience a taste of this in the Maiden demo: the footsteps of the castle’s residents as they go up the stairs, or the sounds of ‘something’ moving in the dark cellar… The effectiveness of the 3D audio in creating a convincing audio space has exceeded my expectations. In horror, creating the sense of a presence beyond the visual scene on screen is essential, so I think 3D audio will be indispensable in horror games from now on.
As a game designer, the elimination of loading times is quietly revolutionary.
Those pauses from a few seconds up to a few dozen seconds when players had time to mentally check out of the game and return to reality will go away. I think this will make it more important than ever to design the pacing and tempo of a game so that players can get immersed and play for extended periods without feeling exhausted by the experience.

Epic Games lost almost $181 million & $273 million on EGS in 2019 and 2020, respectively

A new court filing has revealed some interesting new details about Epic Games and Epic Games Store. According to the filling, Epic has lost around $181 million & $273 million on EGS in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
This basically means that Epic Games Store has not been profitable these past two years. Epic expects its store to turn a profit in 2023, though this sounds like an optimistic scenario. Furthermore, Epic’s exclusives are not that profitable for the company.

The question is how many shitty decisions is Jimbo allowed to make before he's gone... Till he damages a console generation. 🤷‍♂️

Who asked for this? Is a remaster on PS4 not enough?
Yeah, I don't get this. The PS4 remaster was nice and frankly....they're not going to improve the graphics enough on yet ANOTHER remaster to make this worthwhile, from what I've seen. I just don't get this. Also, while I do like some games being redone from time to time (Demon's Souls remake was great), this recent craze of 'remasters' reminds me too much of the movie biz where they are too afraid of new ideas and just keep remaking old hits. Plus a "remaster" is not going to be in the same league as a remake like Demon's Souls was. Color me VERY underwhelmed at this new.

As far as Days Gone 2...that's a serious loss. I certainly hope it was NOT due to the critical reception, which was just stupid and racist as the critics were just upset that the protagonist was a man and also <gasp!> white! If Sony goes that way with their choices, they will get burned in the marketplace. We all like choice and diversity where it is possible and makes sense, but forcing things just doesn't work. Ask Disney + how it's going for them!

Maybe it's me but this is clearer than ever .. and a put The Last of Us on PC!

Sony has squeezed to the last drop of this game, even he was in the plus ...

There is only this justification for this remake.

This is simple. Almost the whole world is or soon will be running the most capable mobile game platform ever created. iPhones and Android phones. It's a IMMENSE market and there is absolute silly-money to be made. If someone like Sony could actually start creating a stable of mobile development houses and good, quality, mobile games...they would really have something. Also would be a way to hook people on mobile devices and funnel at least some into the console market. But bottom line, even with "just" the mobile side, the market is something it's stupid to ignore.

When Sony trademarked PS6 and beyond was that just wishful thinking... Will Sony's added focus on moblie gaming eventually put an end to their Console dominance, Will Nintendo be the last Console producer, will Microsoft release a Fire Stick type unit in the future.... 🤷‍♂️

Or could this just all be an over reaction to assumptions based on hearsay and misinformation. 🤷‍♂️

i wouldnt have minded a tlou remake on the ps5. thats 2 generation apart and couldve been an easy port.

it also really depends on who is making it. if it was just some support studio we had never even heard of then it wouldve been almost like a bonus game. something that came out of left field, and didnt take resources away from say tlou3. but to have ND now drive this is bizarre because ND is already struggling to release games on time. they are struggling for resources and had to bring in sony bend. so not only do we not have sony bend working on Days gone 2, we also have ND working on a ps4 remake instead of working on a ps5 new IP or tlou3.

its just poor studio management. Herman comes in and sees that this remake is expensive and decides to make it more expensive by having his best AAA studio work on a cross gen game? it's not like they have an embarrassment of riches and are swimming in next gen games.

in the past sony knew that you had to take a loss to get people into your eco system. first party studios and first party games are not the main profit drivers. they are there to show off your console's power and give people a reason to buy your console and invest in your system. so what if that game is expensive? make it a ps5 showcase title and give people a reason to upgrade.

i think this is classic arrogance. they think people will buy the ps5 no matter what. you dont need next gen showpieces. you dont need a kojima game. you dont need exclusives. people will buy it because its cool. because the brand is strong. and that maybe the case, but it will lose them their core userbase and that brand will eventually lose its luster. the 360 ended that gen on top for three straight years beating out even the wii after 2010. and they just flopped right out the gate with the x1. they lost their core audience and lost an entire gen.

Cancel TLOU remake, make Days Gone 2, a fire has been lit.
I'd love a DG2 but as long as Bend Studio is making a bad-ass open world action game I'm fine with it.

Just hope Sony execs wake up one morning and realize that follow missions, "detective mode" missions, forcing you to walk or do something else boring while disabling most gameplay mechanics, and any unskippable dialog whether cutscene or not, are all unforgivable gameplay mechanics and immediately order their studios to stop doing any of that. Instead I fear it's being re-iterated in memos for the last 5 years due to their game's success lol

Anyways I'm sure Sony won't say shit.. the mainstream pays no attention to this nonsense and saying anything just draws more attention. They've been broadcasting the "Games are too expensive to take many risks" thing since... well.. they had one of their executives basically saying it in an interview lol The shareholders are listening and buying more stock, not less. And they are still dominating the actual marketplace because nerds don't have as much power as they think.

Maybe, I don’t remember the last time Sony had received this much online hate, maybe the PS3 network outage? Will be interesting if the noise will die down or if the continued knocks will force a response.

Let's see. Just the last few weeks or so:
Japan studio downsizing
Mlb the show going to gamepass
kojipro going to Microsoft
Days gone 2 cancelled

Jim's background is marketing and he thinks if he just shuts up this will blow over. That might have been true 10-15 years ago but not in the age of social media.

They already publish games through Playstation Mobile. And this excludes any dedicated smartphone games like Fate through Aniplex which is owned by Sony Music.

As per the job listing, they now want to "develop". So that means they'll be making exclusive games for PC/smartphone, unless those games also come to PS.
