Good Gaming TV?

Yeah, so I am looking for a good gaming TV to compliment a PS5. I had seen the Samsung QLED TVs, but didn’t know if they were worth it or not. OLED is an option too if you want to recommend one.

Care to recommend me a good gaming TV guys? I’d be in your debts! 🙂

This will largely depend on the budget you have and the size you want. Also the content you consume, if it is just for gaming or do you watch movies and/or sports too? For gaming are you bothered about 120fps in any games?

My budget would be around $1,300-1,400. I plan on consuming content on it obviously other than just gaming like movies and TV shows. I’m not too worried about 120hz, but it’d be nice. After reading the recs, I was thinking about this:

LG - 48" Class CX Series OLED 4K UHD Smart webOS TV

It fits right into my budget and looks great.

OLED
- LG CX / LG C1 / Sony A80J

LED
- Sony X90H / Sony X90J / Samsung Q90T / Samsung Q80A

Here's a decent list for further info

And a good comparison video from last fall

LG CX.

The thing is absolutely incredible. The black levels are perfection.

TLOU2 and RE8 for example are jaw dropping on it.

Depends on your budget, but LG CX or C1 are the best recommendations. OLED with HDMI 2.1

easy choice.
Fuck Samsung.

No fix for LG TV's due to it being a hardware issue, just a mitigating hotfix that requires the user to manually adjust for every game that uses VRR, on the flipside those Terrible Samsung got a firmware update that resolved their issues...

Honestly anyone who tells you to buy a current TV is quite frankly being a bit of an idiot. Wait for the next sets to release as the 2020 models due to people's access to more powerful hardware such as next gen consoles and 3000 series GPU's showed there are some major issues that simply will be dealt better in the next generation of TV hardware as current models simply put are not built to take full advantage of them.

Once the new models are out most of these issues will hopefully go away while if you buy an LG CX now for example you will be stuck with its issues until you replace the television in a few years.

I have C1 and vrr is not an issue... Besides, lg is just now releasing another patches helping with vrr flicker for cx and it works.
Idiot? For me it's idiotic to not recommend one.... It's flawless. Vrr issue is not even a dent

What did you do to burn in your lord? How old is your lord?

I think Lord burn in is a real issue for some people

On topic - it's like buying a car or pet OP, as long as you do your research and narrow it down whatever you pick you'll be happy with. The mainstream split will be either Sony LED or LG OLED

OLED with low input lag.

I saw PS5 Miles Morales running on the Sony A90J and I wanted to throw my tv out right then and there.

My 55CX coupled with a soundbar is fucking incredible to game on, colours pop, hdr highlights pop and the blacks are well actual black.. God of War looks insane on it, especially the realm traversal area plus it has all the future proof tech you need, hdmi 2.1, VFR etc

In my case is super weird, I had this conversation several times with a friend, I have a LG CX 65" and it's the TV with the best image quality I had in my life... but I would not recommend it and I think I never will buy oled again. Yes, it has the best image quality but at the same time it has several things that bother me a lot. In the future I will prefer to sacrifice a bit of image quality instead of buy a Fabergé egg TV like oled.

I got a Samsung 55inch 4K HDR 2020 (QE55Q95T) and it's awesome. Does VRR, 120, 4K, HDR10+, HDMI 2.1, HGIG etc.

I chose it over the LG because our TV room is ridiculously bright. If you have access to a dark man-cave then maybe a different TV would be superior. If you have family who are not vampires then I can recommend this TV! Looks amazing even on a bright sunny day.

Downside is that even though all my devices are plugged in through the various HDMI ports, only one of the ports is the new 2.1 HDMI.

Quick comment for anyone else with this TV, sometimes when watching a movie or TV through an app on xbox it doesn't switch off game mode so you need to manually switch latency mode off on the xbox first (otherwise the colors look a little off).

yep it took time for me to not fear burn ins but the jump in image quality is crazy and i will never go back (i'm now waiting for the aorus oled for my pc or possibly a 32" if that is ever announced quickly enough)
black levels is clearly the biggest jump even more than hdr.

LG for OLED

Hisense makes the best non OLED tvs on the market

TCL is a great budget choice

Samsung/Sony have really fallen off anyone recommending one of those tvs in 2021 should be ashamed of themselves

Buy what you want.

All I can suggest is get it at Costco. 90 day return policy. 2 year standard warranty with pick up/drop service, and a giant TV will be only $100 extra for 3 years more coverage so you got 5 years total warranty.

Samsung's QN95A is the best currently. OLEDs are too dim still, and ABL is too aggressive. Only still recommended in completely lightless environments. If you do get an OLED though avoid the 48" versions, they're gimped compared to 55" and up in terms of brightness and the like.

What's wrong with Samsung?

Edgy isn't it.

I've had Sony, Phillips, Samsung, LG (pre oled) and honestly, the Samsung units piss all over them bar Sony for *pre calibration* out the box colours.

My main gripe with samsung tv's are the ads on the home screen bar for a 2k TV, but I just block all samsung ads through my router.

I'll give LG their dues though. OLEDS with their blacks and lack of bleeding is amazing, but they need to improve peak brightness before I consider buying one.

I use a TCL 4-series 65" that I got for 50% off on black friday. Good, low input lag. Black levels could be better, but it's as good as a PSP screen, so it's like a big-ass PSP when I plug my PS Vita TV in. 4K60, good enough for last/current gen. 5-series is 120hz I think. I like it for the price. Love the big screen. My brother knocked it over flat on it's face and the only damage I noticed was on the bezel. A little heavy if you have to transport it by yourself.

If you have the budget for an OLED then thats what you should buy, in this order of descending price until you hit what you can pay:

Sony A90J
Sony A80J
LG C1

Many more here will explain the reasons to buy, but make sure to read every post and then do a bit of your own research/review scanning to find out why people have the opinions they do. Check enthisiast reviews + aggreate their results, don't just trust just big websites who depend on advertising from said companies because they may be not giving you the true/whole picture.

If you want a TL;DR though, main reasons why Sony gives overall better quality than LG is because the motion, image processing/upscaling, gradient smoothing (ie debanding, which is very important with OLED due to its awesome contrast, so flaws in the source are more visible), tonemapping, UI and out-of-the-box colour accuracy are superior with Sony.

The LG has lower input lag, VRR and more HDMI 2.1 ports, here are my thoughts on those advantages:

You don't need to even ever consider the input lag of a modern TV from these brands for one second if you don't play very seriously competitive online games like FGs or the like, VRR is broken in some fashion across all current LG OLED models so thats why Sony hasn't put it on their sets yet and for the 2.1 ports issue just buy a HDMI auto-switcher, it will change the input automatically so you don't even need a wireless remote for it. Sony will have 4x 2.1 ports on their sets next year probably.

PM me if you want more have a more detailed discussion about it, I will tell you what I think is the best but I'll also realistically consider the content you will watch, what environment/conditions you'll mostly be watching in, your budget and what you actually need/want from the TV.

bar Sony for *pre calibration* out the box colours.

Its just a shorthand way of saying:

"When talking about LCD, Sony is preferable over Samsung because when you look at comparable models they have a much better motion algorithm, better tonemapping that preserves overall picture brightness rather than highlight detail (most consumers want a brighter overall picture ime, over a duller image but with more detail in bright highlits, like the sun), produces a more natural looking image closer to the creators intent, has a better UI (that gets upgraded years down the line unlike Tizen), supports Dolby Vision, etc, etc."

There more but I think I've made my point anyway, the benefit Samsungs have is they have a higher light output and contrast values on test patterns, thats where they excel.

To the 2nd part: If we don't know what models you compared then its a bit of a meaningless statement. You could've owned an edge lit IPS Sony and then upgraded to a 5 years more recent FALD VA LCD Samsung and the difference in contrast would be massive, but its an unfair comparison in terms of panel type and the price difference was also massive. I appreciate thats "not your problem" but enthusiasts are evaluating objectively based on what came before, not based on how the models are marketed.

So of course Samsung TVs don't suck objectively, many of the models are great TVs, but comparably overall they are 2nd best in LCD to Sony and they don't make OLED so they are infinitely last compared to Sony and LG in 1st and 2nd place (when you're gaming, if no gaming at all, I'd put Panasonic 2nd and LG 3rd but this thread is for a "gaming tv").

When people ask "whats a good TV" they presumably don't want all the nitty gritty details and just want to be told what to buy, or else they would've gone and done the research for themselves.

So in this case, if someone is asking about buying an LCD (OP sounds like they will buy an OLED anyway) its way easier to say "Samsung sucks, buy a Sony". Its not nuanced but the OP wasn't looking for nuance afaics.

I would recommend LG OLED for a not too lit enviroment.

LEDs are better for HDR tho with its peak brightness.

I will say tho that with an OLED more or less calibrated, picture is already amazing.

No one in this thread even asked this guy what devices he has or where he's putting the TV or the environment lol:

"You need HDMI 2.1!" Well actually maybe he doesn't, at all, depending on his circumstances. Natural TV upgrade time will mean OP can get 2.1 when he actually needs it down the line, with the full 2.1 spec features as well, like QMS which will be really great for gaming and regular viewing.

Maybe LCD will be best given the viewing conditions/environment, we don't know, so as I said above OP, PM me and I'll go through everything with you if you want, you've gotten general recommedations but you need someone to tailor it more to you at this point or else its still not going to be a well thought out/informed purchase.
