No thanks I'll take letting these new studios have creative freedom. I don't trust the bean counters to give the green light. That was the previous management no thanks. Obsidian do gears rpg, inXile do Halo rpg ect screw that. Will there be a few turds sure but I want to see what these studios can do with out micromanagement.
BTW I am happy with their current strategy even if it leads to some dead ends as well. Why does that Ninja Theory game escape me?

Grounded was also another game that Obsidian was creating beforehand and Microsoft said, do whatever you want. I just wish I had people to play that game with.

Bleeding edge. I like grounded was fun in the preview. I am hoping project Mara makes up for Bleeding edge. You win some grounded and lose some Bleeding edge. Neither are resource intensive. We also have a smaller josh sawyer project from Obsidian. Those guys love to work Avowed, grounded, Josh sawyer game and now pre production of outer worlds.

Yeah, Bleeding Edge is the one.

I don't know but I kinda hoping that Project Mara is a shorter project (6 hours max) that really pushes their boundaries in terms of tech, saw that they were doing some work on the water in the inside of the sink basin. It is a small environment so definitely doesn't need to be padded.

Prediction: The market won't be able to support 1 AAA per month.

GAAS is going to cause a contraction as more and more gamers ignore new releases due to finding "their game".
Are you always this pessimistic?

Prediction: Gamers can play 1 new AAA game a month plus many more AA games for just $15 a month.
GP subs explode, profits explode, gamers everywhere get a Great deal, Sony matches with their own GP type service and even more gamers get a Great deal.
Everybody wins in my prediction...

Anyone cheering for the acquisitions is noting but a pathetic fanboy. It's all about others not getting what you get.

Why would xbox fans being happy about Microsoft's increased commitment to bringing awesome content to xbox owners make someone a pathetic fanboy? More potential value to be added to someone's purchase doesn't make a person pathetic or a fanboy if they're happy to see that commitment. Are people who were happy about Sony buying Insomniac pathetic fanboys?

This idea that MS could own all the studios is stupid. Playstation, Nintendo, Indies, PC with Google, Apple and Amazon heading into the market in various ways. The industry is growing not shrinking.

Main reason I want MS acquire many studios, because under developing games will be 1st party therefore it could come to the PC gamepass within 3 years (I only spent £84 for 3 years)

Just not because I'm fanboy want to see MS stronger and win of this gen. It is all because I'm fucking cheap bastard and greed as fuck, I want to play more good content games for cheap as possible. That's all. I'm just asshole love to get free or cheap everything

I like the look of that, at least what they have showed. Not that we know what the game is per se, but I can see them really working the psychological horror angle with that one.

When did they neuter Rare?
Rare makes what ever game they want and they have been Xbox' most creative studio.
How exactly did MS neuter them?

People do come out with weird narrative to fit the facts, Rare is doing what Rare wants to do. Just like Ninja Theory did with their multiplayer game, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I suspect that there could be a stronger argument that Microsoft needs to centralised the game pitch process like Sony.

Neuter maybe isn’t the best word choice as they have had some decent level of output post-acquisition I can get behind. But if you don’t think the direction they’ve headed from ~2007 onward has resulted in a less free and creative atmosphere and output than they had previously in their back catalog, you’re out of your mind. They basically were relegated to Xbox arcade games and being a Kinect dev for a majority of their time. Maybe I just see it differently, but really doubt ‘Rare gets to do what Rare wants to do’ as opposed to the options they had before. I’m not hip on this info…but I somehow doubt they were begging to work on Kinect for 5+ years.

You do know Matt booty was not in charge back then and has changed things? Everwild seems like a game right up rare's alley not forced like previous management. They seem to enjoy sea of thieves. I see nothing like the old days at Microsoft studios under Matt Booty. He is letting studios do their thing and giving them resources to do it. Isn't that what we all asked for?

InXile boss Brian Fargo gives an example of Microsoft's approach to the new teams.

"I knew what I wanted to do next. It was a category we loved, it was a unique opportunity in the marketplace, and I had all the ancillary information as to why I felt it was a great idea. I prepared the whole thing, I sat with Matt and said here is what we want to do, and he said 'if that's what you want to do, then great'. It was over in like 60 seconds. That was wild for me, because we're used to this six month process of back-and-forth with a million questions -- with things like 'how many pieces of art will there be?'

"I had to go back to Matt a second time and go: 'I just want to be sure that you understood that this is what we're doing.' And he said: 'I love the idea so much that I don't want to see anything, so that you guys over-index on what I say and think you have to change it in some capacity.' That's a true story."

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Gonna say Microsoft is smart, they are basically taking away the mortal kombat from Playstation as Playstation is focusing on EVO currently.
Playstation as the largest MK and hitman playerbase, i think they purposely doing so to interrupt Playstation marketshare.

Why not 1 AAA game per week? Or better yet, 1 AAA game per day.

My question is where does this "One AAA game per month" point come from? Why one per month specifically?

There comes a point where you literally start burning money.

After last gen I’d love them to just prove they can manage what they have before they acquire anyone else.

They've managed what they have quite well. Obsidian has been firing on all cylinders. They've delivered some amazing story DLC for Outer Worlds, Grounded is really fun, they're working on Avowed, likely Outer Worlds 2, Rare's Sea of Thieves is a huge success and has been supported very well, Coalition has only gotten better, and is one of their most efficient and technically proficient developers. 343 has done an amazing job coordinating and doing what has to be done to get Halo: Master Chief Collection where it needs to be, and it's hands down one of the best game collections ever released. Turn 10 is an exceptionally well run and managed studio. Halo 5 is a game I really enjoyed even if the story left me wanting so much more. It tried new things which I absolutely appreciated, and it felt awesome to play, and they're now making the most ambitious Halo title ever with a brand new, from the ground up game engine that will only pay off for them more and more in the long run with each major milestone or bite at the apple as they expand on Halo Infinite over the years.

Ninja Theory, InXile, Rare, Playground, Doublefine, The Initiative all growing and working on ambitious new projects. Bethesda is only going to further improve the internal culture for game development at Microsoft. Microsoft just hasn't had enough AAA releases during the Xbox One gen. They've managed what they've had pretty damn well. Scalebound was an outside project by an outside studio that didn't deliver. That wasn't Microsoft's fault. Microsoft will be fine.

Grubb (as reportedly mention on the Xbox Two podcast by not Grubb) that
Netherrealm and Rocksteady
are rumored acquisitions...

wtf is happening. there's no way, especially not on Sunday.

That can't be true 😱 aren't both of those teams under the WB umbrella?
Wasn't WB games division rumoredly on sale some time ago but later changed their plans?
It's true that we didn't see the Bethesda deal coming but WTF

I have a feeling microsoft in a best case scenario only announces one studio purchase, if any at all.

How many back to back years have we had these massive microsoft rumours only for them to turn to nothing?

I'd advise everyone to calm down and to not expect much.

Yeah I think it’ll be more or less unknown studios, definitely not Rocksteady or Sega or something like that.

The logical assumptions would be studios they’ve partnered with before. Like the devs behind Gears Tactics, Ori, MS Flight Sim. But I don’t see any of that happening either. It’s too late. Maybe Asobo but if you see their game list they’ve been contracted by many other publishers too so there would be a bidding war, would’ve been heard, and Splash Damage is under Tencent since 2016 and Moon signed with Private Division last year.

I think it’ll be something left field and small. Maybe some new dev making some of the upcoming indie games. Who’s making Tunic? Scorn? The Ascent?

It can, easily. The attach rate of AAA games is like just 5-10%, because different people play different games. So MS could even release Forza, Gears and Halo in the same month and it would barely impact their sales, as racing fans were never interested in those shooters at all anyway, FPS fans etc.

You do realize that creating one AAA game per month would send operating budgets through the roof right? You're sure GamePass could sustain that?

I don't. And I don't think MS does either.

With Game Pass that makes no sense anymore.
You can't play both at the same time.
I don't need to allocate my money and buy the games anymore

Chill, no other platform holder does this much for those who hasn’t jumped in yet, more people than ever will have a way to play Microsoft exclusives, you have to be really stubborn to only see locked doors here.

Edit: Look at this illustration and replace Halo with any other exclusive. I mean it could be worse don’t you think?

Depends on how many studios they'll end up with, plus proper dev time and launch schedlue. If a dev A releases game in January, his next hame wll be released 2-4 years later, but in February dev B releases his game, and moves onto the next project for 2-4 years, then dev C drops his game, and so on. Because those studios would be working on those AAA titles and their high budgets regardless, so it all comes down to orchestring the release dates of the games to get that smooth, steady flow of new games. Which is obviously MS' goal in order to support GP. Recent news say about AAA game per quarter, that's va good start, if they'll figure that out then they can think about an AAA gane ever two nonths, and then ultimately per month. But that won't happen within years, rather a decade at least.

Gamepass + traditional sales on console and PC can sustain that.
Microsoft themselves have said that not all the studios they acquired are going to be making AAA heavy hitters. So I think expecting an AAA every month is unrealistic. Probably 3-6 each year if I had to guess once things get rolling.

Yeah they changed their stance. Last year it was a AAA every quarter. Recently they announced it’s a 1P exclusive every quarter. I’m pretty sure they are refining their logistics while moving forward.

Last year it was AAA every quarter? What AAA have they released since Gears or Flight Sim on PC? Didn't they just say a few days ago that it'll be a new game every 3 months, didn't specify whether it would be an AAA each 3 months.

Dude they were talking about their future plans as their acquisitions start releasing games. What are you talking about?
Last year they mentioned their plans for their studios recently they amended it. Don’t bring up this exclusives console warring stuff.

Then why are we even on the topic of a new AAA every month when they literally said last year and a few days ago that it'll just be a new first-party game every 3 months?

It’s a conversation about projected roadmap and sustainability. No one is talking about what actually released except you. This timeframe wouldn’t even fit their projected time table anyways so i dont know why you are asking questions about individual game releases.
