I've always liked Sonic more as a character, but Mario 64 is an infinitely better game, I haven't liked a single 3D Sonic game that Sega have put out.

You're view of the threads intentions is incorrect, these are two games often brought up as the best 3D entries in each series and both were the first transitions to 3D for both series. All I'm asking is which did better and that's it, almost every argument are upset fanatics that are making assumptions without information or not liking that I didn't think either game is one of the best games of all time.

This has nothing to do with Sonic itself or making it competitive.

I'm not upset. I just think a competitive premise would be more fun. There's a clear (and completely unsurprising) outcome here.
No I just didn't agree with it, and so do most gamers.

I'd be interested to see an actual poll about this. You would probably need to lay out a clear definition of "gamer" first. Is it anyone who has ever played a video game? Anyone who owns a game console or PC? Only people who game X number of hours each week/month/year?

This site aggregated a bunch of "best games ever" lists and their average puts Mario 64 at #2 (after Ocarina of Time):

But, of course, those lists are from critics/hobbyists/journalists, so it's probably not representative of what a random sample of quote-unquote "gamers" might think.

Still, I think you have the harder case to prove here, given just how often Mario 64 comes up in conversations of the best games of all time.

Nah one is brought up as the best 3D entry in its series and the other is brought up as the best 3D platformer ever made.

just a little different

Not many people had an N64 this isn't rocket science, and then you have PS1 and PC gamers. It's very unlikely that many people think either game is one of the best games ever, it's most likely those that grew up with the N64.

I think the issue is along with baseless assumptions people are confusing me not thinking it's one of the best games of all time with "it's bad" which happens a lot with those who are maybe too attached to what they grew up with.

Maybe in the 90's within a subset of console gamers but that's not really the case now.

But hey if you think it's that good more power to you, but me disagreeing with it as most would shouldn't be a mob event.

One is a buggy boring incohesive mess and the other one influenced many other games.

Sonic Adventure didn't had a chance against Super Mario 64.

Mario 64 was rereleased on the virtual console and on the Switch, and, of course, is widely available on PC through emulation. It also has a massive following among speedrunners, so there have been plenty of opportunities for people who didn't grow up with an N64 to be exposed to it.

I played and enjoyed both, but years later I have tried and failed to go back to Sonic Adventure 1. It feels capital-B Bad to play.

Meanwhile Mario 64 remains a giant in its genre on the merits of its gameplay alone, and still has better gamefeel than the majority of modern games across any genre.

I had both day one, and its not even close. A huge part of the appeal of Sonic was the graphics at the time. Now that they are dated theres just not much to it. Thats just the Sonic levels, the stuff with his friends is much worse.

Mario 64 was just a great game AND had the insane graphics at the time. It still holds up due to how damn good the control is, and how fun it is just to move around. The amount of moves you can do and how fluid it is to move between them is insane. They never really captured that feel in future Mario games IMO, even if they are better in a lot of ways.

Played Mario 64 fairly recently and was shocked how fresh it still is, what nintendo managed to do in 1996 is unreal. The first real game in a new genre and it still holds its own with modern examples.Don't know how anyone could compare the 2 games in a conversation based on quality.Nothing wrong with Sonic Adventure in 1998, but it was a heavily rushed product.

Mario 64 hasn't aged particularly well (the camera sucks), but it is by far the better game. Sonic Adventure was never a good game, put your nostalgia aside people.

Crash Bandicoot... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Both haven't aged too well
This is completely bollocks for Super Mario 64. It is an amazing game, a one in a kind achievement and it has no "aging" issues (outside of the fact of course, that the particular artistic achievement is only appreciable if you know the historical context, but even on its own it is still an incredibly well designed game. Sonic Adventure is a good game with some shit elements (Chao, Big, Amy, overworld). It is not even close to the league of Super Mario 64 though.

Mario 64 is STILL a great game

It paved the way for pretty much all modern 3d third person gaming (including Zelda OoT)

Sonic - His 3d outings sucked from the first game and STILL does

Crash - that is not a true 3d game

Sonic Adventure was a great game for the time but with stupid fillers like every 3D Sonic game.
It had flaws but it's not like that makes all the good things disappear.

That's said, SM64 is still far superior and aged 100 times better.

I love Sonic Adventure, the music, graphics, speed and “hub world” but Mario 64 is better.
Even though the controls now days feel extremely slippery and frustrating compared to Sunshine

This kind of nonsense is exactly what I would expect from the guy who asks what is the best strategy game and doesn't even put Starcraft 1 in the poll LOL.

I'm a HUGE Sonic fan. I got a dreamcast on launch day (at midnight). I played Sonic Adventure 1 for about 200 hours. The jewel case to a '99 copy of the game is sitting on top of my Dreamcast RIGHT NOW.

But this game is nowhere near as timeless, iconic or megaton as Mario 64. Sonic Adventure has many flaws that stand out worse as time goes on, it just doesn't seem fully finished or polished and has massive problems. Mario 64's only real issue is camera.

If you are asking which game is better of the two. Mario 64 is a game I would give anyone to play, Sonic Adventure I would keep to myself just to nerd out with lol.

OP seems to resent anyone calling Mario 64 the best 3D platformer of all time, painting it as a sort of a dated opinion that most people (or, "gamers") would disagree with. But by any metric that you can actually measure, Mario 64 is very strong.

For example, Crash Bandicoot sold 6 million on PSX and Sonic Adventure on DC sold just about 1 million. Mario 64 sold approx. 10 million on N64, a further 10 on DS, and ANOTHER 10 million within the past year as part of the 3D Mario All-Stars. So, even back then, you can't say not that many people got to play it. More people were playing it than any other 3D platform game. It was the most successful 3D platforming game of the decade -suggesting that not too many people played it because of PSX or whatever is silly. It definitely made an impact.

Today there are more "gamers" with bad taste than "real gamers" -kids playing Fortnite, parents playing puzzle games on phones full of ads, tough guys that don't buy anything but COD #30 and FIFA. So if you told me that Mario 64 is no longer the "best 3D platforming game" amongst all modern gamers, I would say who cares?

The fact that we are even arguing over whether Mario 64 is the best one EVER, shows just how totally beyond Sonic Adventure it is. A different league entirely.

No I just didn't agree with it being one of the best games of all time. For some reason you guys can't cope with that opinion and make up your own assumptions based off nothing. Or swing the topic to me thinking SA is better without any information to come to that conclusion.

I will admit without the rapidness of your fanatism you Mario fans wouldn't have barely saved the N64 and Gamecube. Guess you were needed to keep Nintendo alive. If Only Sega fans tried as hard as you guys did.

Just pointing out Mario 64 was the only Mario game on the system. If they had made more Mario mainline games for the system it wouldn't have sold 10 million. Crash 1 did 6 million but franchise sells were split between three mainline games and two spinoffs. If Crash 1 were the only Crash game the whole gen it would have done more than 6 million.

I am willing to bet that many of the mega Nintendo fans here are (or at least, were) Sega fans as well. The biggest reason that Nintendo kept going where Sega failed is in the legitimate quality of their work.

The mere act of somehow treating SM64 as if SA1 competes with it on some level, appears to downplay SM64. You don't have to agree that it's one of the best games ever made, but, in addition to letting you know that it surpasses SA1, many people are going to point this out. It's not hyperbole, and it's not a myth created by Nintendo fans. SM64 is one of the gaming industries best moments, and crowning achievements. This is true by almost any metric you could come up with. Do yourself a favor and read SM64's wikipedia page. It's okay that you don't think it's one of the best games ever made, it really is. But you will also need to be okay with the fact that most of the world disagrees with you.

You are looking at things through the same lens that had you thinking Starcraft 2 was enough to represent the franchise in your other poll. You appear to be coming in with no context or experience.
