Has Sony Playstation's launch lineup ever been this good?

I'm about to finish Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and I'm truly astounded by how high the bar has been set by PlayStation. Their output of quality exclusives means that bar Call Of Duty, I haven't actually played a third party game since the PS5 launched.

My trophy list

I've been gaming for a while and I honestly don't remember a launch lineup being this good. And I'm wondering how good the your launch experience has been?

Destruction all-stars at 2% eh eh.

Besides that what a wonderful list, where is Arstoboy game btw?

Do "Launch Games" usually release seven months after the console launch?
I'm going to echo this sentiment. Can we really still call this a launch line-up?

I don't think this far down the line still counts or are we falling prey to the "launch window" nonsense these corporations like to push

I have a similar trophy list + the astrobot plat. It's been a great launch period in my book, as far as PS is concerned.
Currently playing through FF7 I for the plat.

Reasonable responses incoming:

I'm having fun yeah, I haven't played Demon's Souls or Returnal yet, just finishing up R&C right now. I came to PS4 late because I was more into PC from 2013-2016/17 so my view of what games that has is skewed, but if I look back at the first two years of PS4 then it doesn't seem as exciting/varied.

The games I've enjoyed on PS5 most so far (Not necessarily PS5 exclusives, but games that are enhanced or better on PS5):

Astrobot
Miles Morales
The Pathless
It Takes Two
Ghost of Tsushima
Resident Evil: Village
Ratchet & Clank: RA

Theres more definitely but I cant think straight right now, this is while I'm also playing many games on PC, Switch and legacy consoles as well so I'm not got enough time to even play everything.

I just looked up a PS4 launch window list and I found this funny in retrospect comment on reddit:

Deep Down and The Witness = DAY ONE BABY :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I've honestly thought it's been pretty boring. I've had a PS5 for 3 months and not a single PS5 game. Still playing Gran Turismo Sport regularly and occasionally Modern Warfare Maybe I'm too picky these days. I tempted to try Rachet and Returnal.

Ratchet is a good time. It's gorgeous too, definitely worth a shot if you've ever enjoyed any of the previous entries.

No i thought playstation 2, 3 & 4 had a lot better launch line up for me then my playstation 5, at least they had games you could only play on that console, so far ive got ratchet rift apart that i can only play on ps5 , the rest could have just played them on my ps4 pro

I think you mean "launch window"

But anywho... I would argue the PSP had the strongest launch titles for Playstation. Here are just a few exclusive games that launched on day one...

And if you want to include the "launch window" like you're doing in the OP, that list becomes even more sweet.

Launch? Maybe not.

But year 1 is another story.

PS2
  1. Tekken Tag Tournament
  2. DMC
  3. MGS2
  4. GTA3
  5. Ico
  6. FFX
  7. GT3
  8. Jak and Daxter

PS3
  1. Resistance
  2. Motorstorm
  3. Uncharted
  4. Ratchet
  5. Warhawk
  6. Heavenly Sword

A remaster, standalone expansion, indie title and two kids games , so I don't know if it's even better than what PS4 offered, and that's a very low bar to beat. If it wasn't for 3rd party games, BC and next-gen patches, the launch of new gen consoles would've been almost completely dry. I personally blame Covid, but 2022 will be when the consoles will really take off, there's HFW, GT7 and GoW already lurking behind the corner, and no one know what kind of surprises we can expect at the upcoming PSX event.

  1. Resistance
  2. Motorstorm
  3. Uncharted
  4. Ratchet
  5. Warhawk
  6. Heavenly Sword

Despite the popular "PS3 has no games" meme I really loved PS3's initial output, and looking back at it right now just makes me sad seeing how Sony is now trapped within a single "TPP story-driven cinematic experience" genre.

What is the real point of these threads?

It's to gain validation from others and reassure yourself that the money you invested in a product was worth it.

(The same reason new Switch owners photograph the box and post it on social media, whilst doing the "goonybeard" face)

The launch window is a thing, but not because these greedy corporations are pushing that narrative, but because these damn stupid game boxes in their first batch of produced numbers are not released all at once in one day or even a week, but over a longer period of time like a few months. But still, I would call it the first year lineup to be more correct.

Wouldnt play returnal even if it was free and as for demon souls there already rumours out that a ps4 versions has been classified so could be out in next few months

I'm really sorry for your loss on that one.

The game is the zenith of rouge likes. So fantastic it made Sony post a cheque to Housemarque and turn the studio from a third party they had relationship with, to a first party.

Nothing will ever come close to the first year of PS2. It was mainly 3rd parties but all exclusives.
There was alot of 1st party too. I count 5 games including Ico, Dark Cloud, GT3, Jak, Extermination.

you mean it has never been this bad?

One remake
One big DLC
One AA game that is not that good and definitely not next-gen
One nice Ratchet & Clank game released many months after launch.
Two mediocre games at best that could have been released on PS4.

Nothing else and nothing else on the Horizon that is truly next-gen.

Microsoft needed a contribution from Halo more than Sony needed a "good" launch, I think launch lineups are easy to criticize. I loved immortals, Valhalla, spider man etc. unfortunately games like god of war and halo never release at launch.

Ssx , timesplitters and tekken tag on launch of the ps2 , especially ssx , never got into tony hawks but ssx just grabbed me , even made me take up snowboarding and booked my first snowboarding holiday 2 months after i first played this game

Ghost isn't a PS5 game though. And I don't think COD really is either (I don't play those)?

But yes, it has been pretty nice.

Do "Launch Games" usually release seven months after the console launch?

"Launch window".

I liked PS2 and PS3 line up more, it had nice combination of both western and Japanese games, but these days 90% of Playstation line up is western games.

No.
That's not because launch has always been amazing. But outside of SSX, I've never had a killer app for launch. But Souls, Astro and Spider-Man - I was in heaven for PS5.

also I'm talking launch day only. Some pretty generous liberties with "launch" games in this thread.

Well, it's not going to work on here, that's for sure. Go on Twitter if you want validation there's plenty there.

Stop it you are scaring me

Demon souls and Rift apart are are really only the exclusives worth having.

I wouldn't call returnal stellar or Sackboy an amazing exclusive must have. Spiderman is on PS4 and Ghost of Tushima is too.

Neither of the consoles have had amazing launch games.

Do you really need to infect every Playstation thread with your pessimistic hyperbole? Honest question!

That seems entirely your fault as there are plenty of games to play.

It's like going to an all you can eat buffet and being bored because they don't have lobster.

Never. People who said this console should have been delayed by a year are fucking idiots. PS gamers have never had it so good. I would know because I've had em all at launch.

Honest question: I have made 11 posts in the past week of which 2 were about playstation.

On which plane of reality do you live in because in none of those I know I have infected every Playstation thread with pessimistic hyperboles.

Get your facts straight, mind your own business and grow up and learn to respect other people opinions instead of attacking them for fuck's sake.

PS5 has been their best launch in terms of quality IMO for home consoles. The fact that some are cross gen is really irrelevant to anyone who bought one. PS1/2/3 and even 4 were pretty bad.

Vita was their absolute best launch ever though.
