Microsoft is announcing that Windows 11 will be released on October 5th. The new operating system will be available as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs, or on new hardware that ships with Windows 11 pre-loaded.

The free upgrade to Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5th, but like many Windows upgrades in the past, it will be available in phases. New eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first, and then Windows 11 will become available for more in-market devices in the weeks and months following October 5th.

I remember all those Windows 10 upgrades I did at my last MSP job. I had to tell clients how much of a security risk Windows 7 machines were to their environment. My guess is that MSP’s will profit from this because it’ll be a project for each client. I also bet you’ll have clients wait until the last day of Windows 10 support or until they are forced to upgrade.

my work only just last week (thursday) got a delivery of 90 new PCs with Windows 10. heck knows when we will actually get around to setting them up. they are in storage until the rest come. entire building probably needs about 300 i reckon. if i remember correctly the new systems have an i5-9400 (6 core no HT) and 8GB RAM. not sure about storage space or if they are HDD/SSD. current systems are running Windows 7 with Intel Celeron with 2 cores (can't remember build/model) with 2GB and 250GB HDDs. they can take about 15-20 minutes to boot up and maybe another 5-10 minutes to open a webpage or Outlook 2007 lol. some have edge/chrome installed but i still use IE on it because it seems to work better than edge/chrome. not sure why.

i gave 11 a shot but not convinced to use it yet. to be fair, i know it is still in dev/beta channel. i'm gonna stick with Windows 10 for now cause i don't have the energy to deal with beta shit anymore. i just want something stable so maybe once Windows 11 has been out a while and had some updates i'll consider trying it out again.

I'll probably load it up on my laptop right away, but wait on my desktop. Except for all the random settings menu obfuscations, Win10 did well for me.

For those in IT, thoughts on Windows 365?

Depends really. For most cases? Not a fan. If your company has a high turnover / largely remote setup / company in dire need of upgrading aged out systems and absolutely don't want to spend money on physical infrastructure? Then sure, maybe.

If you're an end user? No way you should ever do that.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

What's the bet i can't run Dungeon Siege on this bish
I can't run it on 10. Microsoft considers the DRM they published it with to be malware, and as far as I know has not released a patch to remove it.

How do i disable the upcoming upgrade, i prefer to wait until they fix the kinks since direct storage and auto hdr are not w11 exclusive features and don't really need to upgrade.

bro the rounded edges make me sick

is there an option to keep hard edges?
Dont know about the edges but Winaero tweaker lets you restore the taskbar, context menus (seriously, what where they thinking???), start menu and Ribbon.

My problem though is with the settings menu. Its so hard to navigate now without proper icons and they still haven't retired the control panel...

Always looking forward to new Windows versions. I am well aware that they are not always amazing, but I had 95,98,XP, 7,8,81. and 10 and things mostly went well for me. Lets hope 11 is another improvement and not an ecosystem that feels like it forces you do to things the way MSFT wants u to

I’ll wait for the windows 11 OT with tweaks, fixes, complaints, etc. I already molested my windows 10 because of all the telemetry and startup going nuts. Not going through the pain again until it’s ironed out

I can live with many of the changes they made... but taking the clock away from my second and third monitors isn't one of them. And this method has the benefit of restoring the ability to display the clock with seconds via registry tweak.

And the context menu thing is just lol.

Windows 7 was enough for a lot of people.
Although, by today's standards, it's becoming less secure by the second. When it comes to software, if it ain't broke, it ain't not broke, yet.

In 7 oder 8 years I "might" consider upgrading.

Windows 8.1 and 10 were better systems than 7.

For gamers W10 is the lowest system to get now anyway.
8.1 was definitely the best, until I got pissed and screwed up the permissions. Some games wouldn’t want to save or asked for admin because the programs directory was too secure

7 was good, 8.1 was good, 10 was good. They gotta fuck a whole lot up with 11 to make it not good at this point.

It's on GoG my dudes.

Also is there any real reason to play the original Dungeon siege when Legends of Aranna exists? Being the same game and all but with much more content.

(edit, seems like the GOG release doesn't include either Legends of Aranna or the Broken Worlds expansion to II. How disappointing.)
