Honestly I don't see a problem with it. There's no "industry standard" or law or anything like that that means they have to give upgrades for free. Microsoft are an outlier. They'd love to charge for it, but they think not charging is a better way to increase their sales and mindshare etc. Sony don't give a fuck about that because they're flying high, and they know that they'll make boatloads of money by charging and realistically will have zero blowback.

Well, as unfortunate as it may be, this example doesn't really work given if you are interested in Ghost, paying $60 for Forza 5 on the Xbox isn't going to let you play Ghost.

All the games on the right: pay us $60 then pay us $10 for every small piece of the game in microtransactions like a f2p game. Halo infinite, Gears of war 5 and FH5 have microtransactions galore, why do they think Car Pass exists.

True they don't have to do what Microsoft is. Perhaps Xbox is recouping costs other ways but it certainly is not looking good compared to the competition if Sony is charging extra.
I'd be annoyed if I had to pay twice for the same game on the same platform. I understand if the game is on a different platform like PC or something but its still on a PS console.

MS are making games that charge $20 for parts of a game (including graphical asset upgrades in FS). FS, Halo, Gears, FH5 all have microtransactions. A lot of them $20 a pop.

Yeah, not really a fan of this. This just means that I'll wait to buy the game when I get a PS5. Might already be at a discount at that point. I'm done trying to play these newer games on my base PS4, its an inferior experience and I don't plan on paying full price for this.

I will buy it for PS5 whenever I get one. Thanks Sony. Hopefully people vote with their wallets and send a clear message they won't put up this shitty practice.

I'd say this is whataboutism but what you said wasn't even true

I don't like this. I was going to get the standard version for PS4 and planned to upgrade for free, but now will wait for the PS5 version to get discounted. I won't pay an extra, I think I already would pay enough with the full price of the PS4 version.

I think it's different when they take an old game and put extra work on it to port it and add a decent amount of extra features and content on top as did with DS or GoT. This is an extra job that I think deserves to be paid 20 or 30 extra bucks, like when they do a normal DLC.

But when a game is developed as crossgen I think the upgrade should be free specially when they do it with more expensive versions.

Sony gave away Horizon for free for some months back, you did not even have to have PS Plus I believe? Weird that they would nickel and dime on the PS5 upgrade.

So if you have the PS4 game already, you cant even pay $10 and do a PS5 upgrade?

You have to buy the PS5 version or commit to the more expensive PS4/PS5 combo edition?

If you are a PS4 gamer and interested in the PS5 version later, I'd wait it out. Dont force yourself to double dip. Thats what Sony wants.

Just like Spiderman Remastered Edition, where they said it wont be a standalone game and you have to buy the Ultimate Bundle with Miles Morales. And then after launch, a Spidey Remastered Edition was released standalone for cheap.

Just wait it out a bit and see if there's a $10 upgrade. Or wait till they get discounted. Sony wants you to frontload to the PS4/PS5 combo assuming you are a PS4 gamer who will want to play the PS5 game later when you get a PS5 system. So they get an extra $20 out of you. And if you dont end up getting a PS5 or dont care about playing the PS5 version later, they dont care as they got the extra $20 from you already.

With the pricing they set and no upgrade path for PS4, Sony is praying tons of PS4 gamers buy the PS4 edition, get a PS5 later and then double dip the PS5 version for full pop.

This is stupid.

I don't mind $60 for PS4 and $70 for PS5. Game prices were always going to increase, and devs are working extra for PS5 features, they deserve to be paid. However, no upgrade option is a load of bullshit by Sony.

Just give us an upgrade option. Buy HFW (PS4) for $60. Pay $10 to upgrade to the PS5 version if you want.

That will come in time. Just got to wait it out. Sony is trying to squeeze every nickel from early adopter gamers and ones trying to kill two birds with one stone buying the combo edition when they dont even have a PS5 yet, since it looks like a "deal" based on prices with no upgrade path.

Sony did the same with Spidey Remastered Edition forcing a bundle with Miles Morales. Some people just wanted to play that, but at launch eager gamers had to bundle up to the Ultimate Edition.

Then a month or two later, Spidey Remastered Edition was released standalone for cheap.

They know what they are doing.

Playstation games usually have launch week sale anyway on some store chains.

launch week: 50-60€
after it: 60-70€

So either buy it at launch week, or wait for sales.

Free upgrades are nice, but not mandatory. Just buy PS5 version if you own ps5 and problem is solved.

If it is too expensive, just wait for sales or buy used one.

Simple and easy.

I have had maybe 100 physical games for ps4, and I paid full price for maybe 10 games or less. So it is life of choises.

Yeah I think they will cave in later. But it's still absolutely stupid.

I think it'll have a big impact on PS4 orders (people won't pre-order or get the game digitally) until they have secured a PS5. Not good.

I’d bet they’ll cave and release some kind of upgrade path. People will complain about the $10 upgrade too though.

I would understand this wouldn't be great pre PS5 launch but seriously.. Do people really expect they should give you a free PS5 version knowing you can buy the PS4 copy cheaper?

The PS5 is out, if you have a PS5, buy it on PS5, you are not forced to buy the PS4 version. And if it wasn't cross gen, for people that don't have a PS5, you wouldn't be getting the PS4 version anyway.

People complained it's a cross gen title and now you want a free upgrade on the last gen version? Smh

Technically he didn't lie, there is a free upgrade path it's just one of the more expensive versions, you aren't technically being asked to pay ONLY for the upgrade. I think it's a shitty way to do it, as long as games are cross-gen this is going to be a problem so they should always offer the upgrade for $10 until they stop supporting the PS4. It's really not going to cost them all that much to do it so it seems like there is a lot of risk in pissing people off with very little reward.

Ironically developing a game for PS5 should be cheaper tech wise as jumping through hoops for streaming is eliminated. You want it, you got it sort of thing. Artwork etc. may also be more cost effective as you can just aim for lod 0 and allow components like the geometry engine to simplify at runtime etc.

It is undoubtedly extra work to create a game to work across both system however.

No, it's a valid complaint because there is no upgrade path.

Suppose I don't have a PS5 yet (I haven't been able to secure one), and I buy the PS4 version when HFW releases in February. I play 40% of the game and manage to get a PS5. Now I can't upgrade my game from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. I instead have to pay $70 to buy the PS5 version. So that's a total of $130 ($60 to $70).

I don't mind $70 for the PS5 version, but there should be a $10 upgrade path to move from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. This is bullshit.

What’s amazing is that step by step with each release they are pushing the boundary of scumsuckery a bit further. Owning a PS5 I’m unaffected, but I’m sure as hell not buying it till it’s discounted on principle. Fuck em.

I'm no techie, but thats sounds reasonable. But in reality, price and cost of goods dont necessarily go up or down together.

The final price comes down to what people will pay for it.

At my current company, we makes all kinds of shit you see at stores, but the cost of goods price for some products is cheaper than a shittier product. But we price it higher and the store prices it higher too. And some products that are factually shittier quality by our R&D team are priced higher because people love the brand.

What often determines final pricing is branding and simply strength of consumer pull.

Historically, I've been someone who buys mainstream brands at stores. But over the past few years, I decided to dabble more with odd brands or the ethnic/international aisle just to try out new products. Unique pop, sauces and from the frozen food aisle some off brand frozen vegetables. Despite be cheaper and sketchier packaging, look at that. Some shit I've been buying are great products. But they get buried behind all the giant corporations promoting mainstream stuff you see on TV.

In this case just hold Jim Ryan accountable for what he said. He said they would offer a free upgrade offer from ps4 to ps5. Is there a free option? If not we have his words on it.

I stopped buying single player games on release a bit in to the PS4-era. Just because I don't see the point of it. If I just wait for the Christmas and summer sales I can buy a bunch of games for half the price. And then I can play them while waiting for the new games to drop in price. Easy peasy. I understand the urge to get games when they are new and shiny but buying at launch is just plain stupid in my opinion. But people do it anyway. The only game I payed full price for att launch last generation was Red dead redemption 2 because that game was something really special and Rockstar never disappoints with their GTA:s and RDR:s. :D

Sad thing is, that Sony doesn't need to do this. It's highly unprobable, that they will get stupidly rich over this shit.
But they know they can. Because Sony fanboys are starting to rival fanboys of Nintendo in their fanboyism a their willingness to eat everything. Sony know they will get away with this, so they are doing it. It is simple as that.

1) This is a shitty practice and Sony should not be doing this. Period.

Price differences on PS4 and PS5 games is very debatable, but as long as they offer an upgrade that bridges the price gap then it's just a matter of them making different versions of their products more expensive, which is a legitimate business decision in and of itself. If they start using price differences as a leverage to sell versions even more expensive than the one for either console, then they're being shitty and they know it.

2) So many people can't even fucking comprehend a linear and unambiguous string of sentences, or they simply don't want to because they want a "gotcha" at all costs. Sony never promised there would be a free upgrade for Horizon. They listed a series of games coming out on PS5, then they specified that of those games the LAUNCH TITLES would have a free upgrade from the PS4 version. Horizon was never intended or promised as a launch title. The launch titles did have a free upgrade. End of the story.

If you lack basic reading comprehension to the point you can't understand a simple paragraph even after the meaning was spelled out for you, you should ask yourself questions and work on developing your language skills, not be smug about it on the internet.

In the previous gen, there was no free upgrade for cross-gen games aside from small exceptions and no one complained. Now people act like Sony is fucking the consumer, but why?
I'm not defending Sony, wish i could get the two versions too, but i find this sudden entitlement a bit funny.

Last gen Sony pioneered cross buy. This gen Sony pioneered cross FU!

Honestly, it sucks seeing what Sony have become after we all cheered their success at the start of last-gen.

I cancelled by PS+ and buy my multiplats on XSX as I'd rather support MS at this point. Hopefully they can actually be competitive this gen and drag Sony out of their arrogance.

True, but it was mostly for Vita and indie games.
You didn't get the PS4 remasters of GoW3 and TLOU for free if you had bought the games on PS3, for instance.
Fair enough. I guess the key here is remasters that came later on attracted a re-buy. But if the game was being sold on multiple Sony platforms at the same time, you got the entitlement.

People also complained about having to pay for Spiderman remastered and Ghost of Tsushima DC, despite coming out later on PS5. I think the expectations are just different nowadays, probably because of what Microsoft is doing in comparison.

From spider-man's puddles to nemesis' teeth, to director's cuts, to this

But we are making multiple versions to justify budget.
But making multiple versions requires more money, so we need to charge twice.
But making an exclusive requires a premium price tag.

What a joke. PS charges more now just because they can, they used to have no problem selling crossbuy everything during the PS3 era, they know there is people too deep that will buy regardless, they are pushing it as much as they can.

It list the name of several PS5 games (launch and future) and the [PS5] launch games will have free upgrade.
Nothing is said about future games like Horizon.

"The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive."

Some photo mode emotes are DLC / Edition exclusive 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The worst is the fact they said Its a "HUGE" feature they didnt charge for ... so they contemplated charging for Photo Mode

But no one plays photo mode right? Right...?

GAF you are so disappointing. At the same time you laugh at Sony for that 'we believe in generations' meme, you refuse the pay them for their efforts on 'next gen' consoles.

You are nothing more than entitle kids wating everything for free because for some reason you think you deserve it.

Do you really think 'voting with your wallet' and make sony dont give a shit about next gen enhacements is the way to go?

You are gonna have a very rough time when you finally grow up lmao
