Dragon Quest 11 worth playing?

Just got dragon quest 11 as a present. Worth spending time on this one? How does it compare to previous games? What I'm looking for is great story and enough gameplay depth to last 40 + hours as one should in any RPG title. I got the 11s definitive edition version.

Visuals, atmosphere, characters, all of this is really great. The story, while not being incredible or anything, is quite enjoyable because it really feels like one long adventure with many different little stories, ton of different locations etc. The amount of different cities / villages with different themes is impressive.

However, the soundtrack is kinda bad, though apparently that's improved in the S version (visuals are downgrade though...), and most importantly, the gameplay is absolutely horrible.

It's really the the most basic / classic (in a bad way) turn based system you can have. There's nothing strategic in the combats (the game can even play by itself if all characters are set to auto, and it can handle most combats like this, with the exception of bosses), it's just long and tedious without any kind of depth or strategy involved.

Even the boss fights, which could be some of the few interesting combats, are terrible because they never allow you to build any long term strategy. You have some attacks / spell that are completely useless, because they take too many tries / too much time to be worth using in regular combats, but they also don't work on bosses, so... And the bosses will always wipe out every buff / debuff on the field every 2 or 3 turns, so you can't build any big combo or stuff like this, it's like the game only wants you to play in the most basic way, and it's quite frustrating.

So yeah, great adventure, nice cast to follow and interesting world, but bad combats. Depends what your level of tolerance is for gameplay.

Yes, but make sure you get Dragon Quest 11-S, not the original if you end up trying it out.

It's a vanilla ice cream JRPG so don't expect anything you haven't seen before but it's one of the best JRPGs of the last decade just in terms of excelling in every aspect from music to gameplay to satisfying character building.

Fun game/world if you love DQ. Set the draconian quest for hard monsters though.

Awful plot compared to prior entries the series and perhaps the worst soundtrack I’ve ever heard for such a long game.

Edit: awful is a bit harsh in describing the plot. its just really really vanilla

Totally.

Great characters and charming design...well, aside the main hero. Also a good skill tree that covers a good amount of weapons and a forging system that ins't a drag. The game also make use of different clothes, making some characters even more cooler.

Just a note OP, its a turn based game. Gaf ain't happy with turn based rpgs(let alone Jrpgs), and the OST is not much good. The DQ11 S version kinda remedies this, but still some weird instrument choices.

The thing I really enjoy about Dragon Quest 11 is you can play in either the modern day graphics or old school sprites. The whole game I think. And that's pretty damn cool.

yes, fuck yes. The game is divine jrpg goodness. Buy the S version for the quality of life improvements.

music is a shame though, made much better by the S versions orchestra.

No, terrible game and horrible franchise.

For once I will agree with you at least on DQ11. It has the most generic jrpg story you can imagine and ppl are just blindly ignoring that fact. The soundtrack, had to be, barely, fixed by fans, because the game's soundtrack and overall sound design is garbage. If you're on console enjoy the shit sound and music. Combat is ok I guess and the atmosphere was cool.

Actually some advice with DQXI, if you find the gameplay too samey or simple, just ignore enemies after you've fought them once and run past them.

This will make you under-levelled and boss fights will be strategic and exciting. Grinding will ruin this enjoyable balance. Maybe all DQ games are designed that way but I only figured it out in DQXI.

Absolutely. Great game and rpg. Thankfully they fixed the music in this version unlike launch version.

It's one of the best "classic" JRPG in a sense. It kept what makes a DQ a DQ quite well, at the same time mildly modernized the storytelling and all to the level that's not too distracting or feel too outdated.
I genuinely had great time playing the game, mind you that I spent quite a long time to really "complete" the game till the hidden bosses and all the trophies - I think at least around 150 hours or so.

I would definitely recommend definitive version just because of soundtrack. GFX wise, the original wasn't really that much "tour-de-force" gfx to begin with when I did play a bit on my PS4 Pro. Also certain QoL improvements like forging armors and all would have been pretty nightmarish on the original, when I think back.
