[IGN] Best Game of All-Time : The Grand Final! (God of War 2018 wins)

I remember Gamespot doing the greatest game series of all time about 8 or 9 years ago now, and TES beat the GTA series in the final, but then again that was just after Skyrim was released, so these competition's are just relevant to what's being played mostly and popular at the time really,

Younger gamer's don't generally care a lot about what are old games to them, if there hasn't been any newer titles released in the various popular series of the past, GTA should win because of GTA online's popularity, but i would of chosen it for San Andreas and not online.

This contest sucks. I would have expected Ocarina of Time as one finalist.

LOL I'm sorry -- WHAT???

I could at least consider GTA5 with a straight face considering its impact, scope, and just everything in it, but what the fuck is GOW doing there loooool?

Holy shit what an awful pick. And I'm not even speaking to the game's quality here but I think most gamers worth their salt wouldn't consider GOW the greatest game of all time.

What the fuck. What a joke lol.

Who made this list, FHM?

Guess we are getting to that time when games like three old infinity engine games are just a footnote. Not even on this list.

I mean... Chrono trigger being beaten out by Burnout?

In all fairness many haven't even played these games and have grown up with them GTAs on the world. Still God is War... wow.

Definitley not what i would have picked.

My nostalgia bubble popped long ago, so those old janky ass games can go too. The rest of you need to get with the times already

I think all this does is highlight the age bracket of IGN readers. You’d need to be in at least your late 30’s to have chosen some of the actual all-time classics. Us oldies just need to suck it up! Eeeee, games just aren’t what they used to be……. (said dad).

There's always a bit population of voting gamers who have short memories, who would vote for the game they're playing right now, i saw a poll in 2009 that thought portal was the greatest game oat, second only to OOT... It's good but not that good.. otherwise more people would talk about it...

If i were one of this type of voter i might say cyberpunk 2077 is goat because i just played it for 200 hours and loved every minute of it. But i wouldn't, it's not THAT good.

Also Bravo to ign for engineering a final that isn't a runoff between two ps exclusives hehe

Ps. For kicks, in no particular order:
OOT
MGS 5 (have yet to complete mgs3 omg)
FF 7
BG 2
Skyrim
BioShock
Half Life 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (just a Tschumi tschoice there)
Witcher 3
Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings

GoW 2018 best game ever?

omfg that is just stupid. It was good but really flawed - especially the level design suffered, it was so obviously constrained by the ps4 slow drive.. small areas with lots of corridors/climbing/squeezing for loading. That makes the game age quite badly
Glad you like it. There's more to common for the second one.

What the fuck? I thought Zelda was beating GTA V!
Guess the Instagram votes are the most beefy after all, what a joke, votes on Instagram!!!! imagine..

So which game that has not aged badly do you propose? Zelda OOT or GoldenEye on the N64? 😏😏😏

This whole bracket and especially the voters triggered the fuck out of me. Some great games on here, but overall a mess. Maybe I'm just a boomer, but the recency bias hurts me inside.

There's got to be a better way of doing this. There's no way a 20 year old game with a 200mb size can be fairly compared to a modern game that's 40gb +...let alone 8bit and 16 bit games that are hardly bigger than 1-2 MB.

A 2020 ferrari is superior in speed, comfort, safety and amenities than one from 30 years ago...no shit Sherlock.

Maybe better to put games from the same generation against each other.. figure out the generational winners and then compare across generations against some relevant criteria that sustains across generations like: overall impact on gaming culture during its generation, replayability, accessibility, immersion during its generation, addictiveness etc.

Anyone else agree?

God of War is a solid game, its good, it looks good and it plays good and the story is decent enough. So overall its a solid package. But the problem is it doesnt have anything on its own to stand as among the best games of all time. It has nothing about it that stands out as something special about it, something you can point out to other and tell them.. See? this is why God of War is among the greatest games ever made. Instead its just a game that does most things solid except for few problems so the casual gamer doesnt hate it, also the game just recently got the Hype for Trailer of sequel so that really helps. In a dry year like this it even boosted the result if i had to guess.
God of War is uninspired game, you can claim that it took a huge risk, but did it really take them? The changes to its formula are things that are taken from successful GOTY that came before it, for example, God of War went towards the semi-open world design instead of pure linear design because at the start of the 2010 decade Skyrim popularized the open world formula, we can further support this by saying that God of War went to snowy fields with viking/norse background as the world design for it based on the success from Skyrim.
The story and the over the shoulder camera was influenced by the success of The Last of Us, a game with father-daughter relationship, God of War went for the same, despite for Kratos being a brutal god of war he got himself a wife and a son and became a dad to teach his son, a relationship story between 2 characters, with Cinematic over the shoulder camera, button mashing to open door and fight during a cinematic scripted fight, again inspired by The Last of Us.
Gameplay wise it took the combat of Dark Souls, it took influence from it and changed its formula from the hack and slash quick brutal combos style to a new methodical combat formula popularized by the Souls series and Fromsoftware.

3 Major design choices, all uninspired taken from other tried formulas.

The addition of the shallow lame and unnecessary RPG elements are a thing that not suited for this type of a game.
The enemy variety is not good, too many similar enemies that behave similar.
The boss fights are also repetitive with so many trolls and ogres, few of them are decent at best like the ones with the Thor sons, the Valkriyes fights are reskins with few move tweaks.
Difficulty implementation is bad its literally just damage sponges.
Some realms feel unfinished and incomplete.
Exploration is not very rewarding, but its decent enough imo.

Again, yes solid game, every game has its flaws but the sum of their part elevate them and they have something special about them that can be pointed out and remembered for ages. God of War doesnt have that. And with time the game will age and will have nothing to stand on, when a new similar game will be made with higher production values, it will easily replace it.

That's my take, i believe you that the choice is not good but i think you wrote it in controversial way without putting effort to really explain your opinion so i thought maybe i can try to do that.

I guess games weren't invented until about the last 10 or 15 years. Pretty much any old school Sierra game is better than either of these and GTA V isn't even the best GTA by a mile.

Look at how many copies GTA V sold and that should tell you why it in the top 2. People including myself knock the game but the general public seems to feel different. I would put RDR 1 and 2 and even GTA IV over it but I am just one guy.

Maybe it´s time someone made a thread about "The Worst Video Games of All time". My vote goes to Daikatana.

If arbitrary design constraints were a disqualifier then no game would make the list

Personal Opinion vs Public Opinion. Look where HAlf Life 2 lies...absolutely brutual. This is why I say don't go overboard. Good List. Two super fandom battles between Bloodborne and Breath of the Wild thinking that they can beat GTAV. I don't like GTAV but it is a well-made game and will obviously destroy both of those at fandom.

lol

GoW isn’t even the best God of War game.

I miss the days when finals for thing like this were always FFVII vs Ocarina of Time. You know, actual GOAT games.

Best games of all times ... man people really don't know older games.
Don't get me wrong, those games are good, but the best ....
Yep. I really enjoyed GoW, it's my favorite PS4 game. But when I think about all the games I played in the past 25 years, it's not even in the top 20. There's a huge recency bias in those brackets anyway, feels like IGN audience is rather young.
