Action Button / Tim Rogers Cyberpunk 2077 Review

I love the hell out of this man. His Dragon Quest 11 review for polygon is probably one of my favorite pieces of media of the last 10 years. I think a lot of people just don’t get him because of his weird way of speaking, but the dedication and love he puts into everything he does is undeniable. Just embrace the Rogersverse and you’ll begin to understand.

Barely watched his video, but as a person working in media, I respect the hell out of his production value and editing approach to keep his audience engaged.

In the 3 minutes I watched, I was definitely engaged. So props for him.

But a multipart review is too much for ne.

I'd give that amount of time for historical documentaries, not a for a video game review.

This guy wishes he had the effortless academician voice of Noah Caldwell-Gervais.

With that out of the way though, this was awesome. I haven't watched it all and don't think i will, but i loved the first 4 6ths of his intro, made me wanna stop watching this video and get back to studying Japanese and working.

I totally value this long format, well researched content. It's impossible to be a lazy downer about a game like cyberpunk if you actually commit to looking closely at it. It's not perfect, but PS4 hardware issues don't have anything to do with the actual experience.

A bit annoyed by his name dropping every game he played (not completed i guess) but yeah that kind of depth is required to really express yourself in a medium like this.

Thanks for the links, forum Capitan

Whats his overall take on the game ? Dis he like it ? (I personally think it’s a masterpiece)
I won't know for certain until I get to the end of the series, but his musings in the intro make me believe he enjoyed it though he has nuanced issues with the game and was ultimately disappointed in it. I think the last video in the playlist or the penultimate video includes a summary of his thoughts.

No. The 'buuut iT iS oNLy a j0Ke' excuse is bullshit and doesn't fly. You know what the intent behind that rhetoric is. You wouldn't use it if you didn't understand that intent. Stop hiding behind that excuse and acknowledge that that rhetroic is hateful and insulting. Do you think all people with autism are idiots then? Clearly you think so, otherwise you wouldn't readily use that 'joke'. Let's see what the mods think shall we?

:messenger_ghost: Sure, go ahead and tell a mod. :messenger_ghost:

You don't know anything about me or what I think.

Your right I don't, so next time I suggest you present yourself as someone who doesn't think in that way. Use your words properly because believe it or not, that's all that people have to go on. If you don't want to be seen as that kind of person, why present yourself like that? You can't have your cake and eat it. It doesn't work like that.

Being outraged doesn't mean your perception is the right one.

Notice how you just said you knew how I thought and then instantly retracted that when I pointed out that you don't? Your goal is to try to shame-bomb me into submission and it's really not a persuasive argument at all.

I'll follow whatever the mods say, but your argument is doing nothing for me.

I have not retracted anything. I simply said that IF YOU don't want to present yourself in that way, then don't talk in that way. I still stand behind my words and thinking on this matter. My perception of you still stands behind your OG post. Telling me that I 'do not know anything about you or what you think', does not fly with me. I can only know how you presented yourself in your OG post. Seeing as how you instantly tried to defend yourself with 'it's a joke' told me a lot. Don't like it? Don't hide behind that excuse next time.

It's not an excuse, it's an accurate description of exactly what my post was. Intent matters, and your claim that anything in my post was hateful is highly debatable. To then twist that exaggerated claim into justification for baseless claims about me and how I think is where you become a fiction writer. But you know that, and the whole point is to exaggerate the outrage to amplify your threat to me and get the desired response you want. So spare me any of your two-faced justifications, because it's not persuading me at all.

Intent and context matters behind any joke. Would you be saying this same thing if it was a obscenely racist joke? Intent does matter, but not when it disregards the societal and historical context of how and why that joke is formed in the first place. This is not about amplyfying any outrage. This IS about speaking out against what is considered as disablity hate speech. Whether you want to accept that or not is irrelevant. I can't just go and be racist to someone and say OH ITS ONLY A JOKE THOUGH!!!!! Why should using the subject of disablity not be held to that same standard?

Clicked on a random spot on a random video. He was talking, in depth, about a random twitter conversation he had about an entirely different game. This is some grade A hypnotism if anyone watched all of these videos all the way through.

Yes, I would assume this man has a hit of the tism. A real good lick of it. I had several laughs during the first video and from what I understand he enjoyed the game on PC with a ridiculously high-end rig.

He explains he’d like viewers to pick two of the videos to watch before the final one. Or you can watch them all if you’re a masochist and enjoy bloat.

Uhh, me I guess. I’ll watch any video Tim puts out. His meandering takes on video games are a tour-de-force of strong writing & presentation. I don’t know of anyone else in any medium who tackles criticism and discussion to this level. And I’m all-in on it.

He definitely puts in the work/production value, but the word you used, "meandering," is what puts me off. He's well spoken and has obvious skill and experience with writing, but I'd say brevity is a crucial element in things like reviewing a product. I know there's a million people who do five to ten minute reviews and that this long form editorial thing is kind of his shtick, but per my specific taste, I cannot stand how many tangents the man goes off into. His reviews often feel like a conversation with a severe ADHD patient; an illustrated run-on sentence.

A poster earlier said he clicked on a random point in the video, and dude was going on a monologue about an unrelated tweet. Like, I get it, sometimes you need segue ways, but Christ almighty, it's so self indulgent to barrage your viewer with a twenty minute intro about you having to do your own laundry in a FFVIIR review. Were he more focused and honed his skill into the topic, I'd vibe with it a lot more. But not everything is for everyone, I'm glad his fans got a smorsheborg of content.

It’s okay not to like it.

Tim Rogers is the video game equvalent of a gonzo journalist, and I love him for that.

His game reviews feel more like long winded self assessments. Reviews of his own review in a weird way.

It's incredibly self-indulgent, long-winded and borderline schizophrenic with how often he does asides that feel seemingly unrelated. I love that. It makes it all feel personal and devoid of cynicism.
