returning to a game you haven't played in a long time...

only to find out you no longer know how to play it

i hate this shit. happens to me pretty frequently since I'll randomly stop playing a game even if it's great

I haven't touched Yakuza 0 in roughly 1 year. figured I'd pick it up again since it's a fun Christmas game

I'm about 40 hours in, no clue how close I am to the end but I'm getting destroyed in the larger battles and boss fights now

I don't recall having much trouble with this game when I was playing it last year, I've just completley lost the hang of all the controls

this shit sucks, will often lead to me just abandoning the game permanently

anyone else deal with this?

Skyrim. I always end up modding it and never playing it. I don't know how to start a playthrough. I had nearly reached a point where i was looking to play dragonborn and then modapocalypse happened. This game has some kind of unhealthy addicting modding minigame on PC. I feel like i am doing drugs when I spend all day thinking about which mods to use.

I've just done more or less the same thing with Skyrim although i am actually playing after spending hours going through mods to use, loads of new ones and trying to remember the old ones, i haven't really played the game since the Legendary Edition days and forgot a lot of how it works and what to do at first, i'm back in the swing of it now.

Yakuza 0 is actually pretty easy, the combat is button mashing and super easy due to bad a.i of the opponents and lacking mechanics execution.
Actually this might be a hot take but Yakuza 0 is a game that i only enjoyed it story, everything else i felt was boring and a waste of time, ranging from mediocre to bad. Majima is great though.
Also make sure to play it with controller, though you would be putting it aside most of the time due to long cutscenes. As for the topic most tough platformers, i need some time to adapt back, and let my muscle memory remember it.

All the time lol even just restart some games if I was only a few hours in to make it easier and refresh my memory on the gameplay and overall plot, and judging by some of these replies I need to get back into Sekiro ASAP

This happens to me with Souls games. Not because of the difficulty (I'm a grinder), but because of not having an in-game journal/log.

I load my game and I find myself not knowing where to go. I don't remember which areas I cleared or which bosses I killed.
When I find myself in these situations, I just fire up the Wiki and read the level entries until something comes back to me.

Paladins. Still fun, but the matchmaking still sucks.
Jenos is very fun to play. Mine is Lvl999 no levels bought. I rarely play him lately cause When players see lvl 999 they just afk in the base and say carry me virgin. LOL Im not even kidding. Players seem to think I can heal more the higher my levels are.

I can relate, never finished MGSV because of this. Nowadays I hardly ever allow this to happen and always play the game to completion and move on.

How did you get a lvl 999? I have >1000 hours in this game and my highest champ is 70 and only 3 others are 30. The rest is mostly below 10.

My memory is crap and pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD, so even putting a game down for like a month I forget the story, controls, etc.

Somehow ended up doing this with both Resi 7 and RE2 Remake, finished 2 but I'm planning on finishing 7 soon. For such a short game the scripted moments do drag out.

I tend to put a game on ice for a while when I get really stuck on it, I'll play something else then later return only to forget why I stopped playing it in the first place.

I recently continued my playthrough of Far Cry 3 (360) on my XSX from march 2018 which I never finished. It was ok to remember the controls untill I had this stealth mission where I needed to throw rocks to distract the enemy, I'm not kidding it took me a very long time pressing everything except for the D-pad and literally going around the area trying to find some rocks I could pick up untill I figured out by accident it's pressing right on the D-pad.

It took me years to stick with Witcher 2, and every few years I would come back to it and have to teach myself what the spells were and how to play all over again. I ended up sticking with it eventually.

I'm in the middle of Chrono Trigger and the last time I played was when it left me with no clear path but lots of things to do across different time periods. It's going to be fun trying to figure that out.

Recently had this with breath of the wild. I completed half the map when I played it 2 years ago. I can't remember why I stopped. I have been wanting to go back but I really don't want to start over.

Put on a let’s play and fast forward through. As you see images and clips you’ll start to remember, then you’ll be ready to pick it back up (or at least as ready as one can be).

Honestly it’s best just to start the game over at that point. Which is kind of exciting to me because I’ll have a chance to find/do things I missed the first time around, plus the game will feel easier since I already know how to play it.

When I came back to Ghost of Tsushima I had regressed from Elite Samurai to something out of a slapstick movie constantly on my arse or whiffing my attacks.

This is me at Sekiro.

I’m at a place just before the corrupted monk, after Mibu Village.

Haven’t played the game for like 8 months (Demon’s Souls and Returnal released and stole its thunder) and coming back I’m getting massacred by this woman NPC and I just see my dragon rot increase.

Sekiro comes to mind. Almost impossible to come back to it when the next step is to fight a boss that will bitchslap you like a rag doll because you lost all the game’s buildup to prepare you for it.
I bought Sekiro at launch, finished 6 times. Got the plat. Left the 7th run at the final boss in case I wanted to return to it.

Last week I decided to beat the boss for "fun"... I defeated Genichiro easily... I got confident and said loud:

Then Isshin showed up... I proceeded to die an uncountable number of times...

I am still wondering how I was able to defeat him before...

After having spent 300+ hours on Death Stranding on PS4 more than a year ago... I had to start a new game on PS5.

If I return, I almost always restart, unless it's a GaaS type game.
Played Hollow Knight to 97% two years ago, restarted from the beginning now and memories came flooding. Found the 'Path of Pain' this time and I'm steeling myself before I grind myself retarded doing it.

I loaded up Bloodborne the other day and it had me in a part where a dog was literally jumping at me the moment the game started. Scared the shit out of me and I couldn't remember the controls so I was just running around in a blind panic. lol.

I gave up before beating the Troupe boss, then returned a year or two later. I had to teach myself how to play this already unforgiving game again before jumping into that difficult boss. Did it, but I did do a bit of YouTubing to find out where I was going wrong

Good luck with that. Get ready to go insane and keep a pillow close by to punch at.

This is going to happen to me. I started playing The Last Of Us Pt II last week but for some reason decided to ditch it and start playing Prey instead. Now as time goes on, I feel more reluctant to return to TLOU as I will probably want to start again from the beginning. In that case, I may as well wait another year and play it at 60fps on PS5.

I just start over instead of trying to pick up where I left off. Then I can get to the place that made me decide to put it down in the first place and probably put it down again.

MGS 5 & RERemake.. Just bliss

Although the former makes me feel like a real badass but the latter makes it so that I'm suffering from early dementia
