Where are the arcade racers?

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
This is such a fun genre that rarely gets made or atleast by AAA Publishers. I miss the games like Burnout, NFS (most wanted was the last good one), Cruis'n USA, etc.

I have purchased a few smaller house games of this nature but almost all of their servers or dead. Part of the experience is racing other people but like I said these lower budget publishers games suffer from dead lobbies.

Need for Speed has tried to bring this genre back but those games are mostly shit. Since the underground series and most wanted they have gone to hell. Dirt is a solid series but I personally like the good old fashioned street racing.

There is a decent series called Asphalt that went mostly mobile. Fun games but they went that pay to win angle. Playing these games requires you to have deep pockets to make real progress.

Because arcade racing games don't sell multi millions, so it's not worth it to make them anymore. I'd really love a new Road Rash, Motorstorm and Split Second, but I'm not really counting on ever seeing them being made.

For some reason I can't fathom, people these days would rather play some boring sim racer instead.

Buy that game made by the original burnout people, it’s basically a sequel to Burnout Revenge. The menus, gameplay, and presentation are almost a carbon copy.

My point is I want over-the-top, unrealistic, psychotic fun, like what Road Rash, Motorstorm and Split Second provided. On Playstation, I have Driveclub if I just want to race through pretty environments. And sure, I can still play the games I mentioned on my previous gen PS's. But I've played them to death and would like newer versions that provide the same level of fun that those games had.

At least we got a good crash 'n' bash racer in Wreckfest. The Wipeout remaster is fun, Hot wheels has crazy tracks, and there are very few others that try to be more than straight racing, but feel like they're generally half-hearted efforts. Most so-called arcade racers this gen and last gen were mostly little more than straight racers with arcadey physics. It's not the same.

Not really arcade, but i have a lot of fun with Beamng. Reminds me of those stuntman and stuntman-style games, or take a ride mode from old driver games.
Seems to have a fairly active Multiplayer too.

Like I said:

Literally made by the burnout creators, basically Burnout 5.

I did buy that for the switch. Lobbies were dead from day 1.

From the side genre of arcade racers started by Destruction Derby, I recommend Wreckfest. A solid big game done with current gen production value, not some indie mocap of 90's race feeling with mobile graphics.

I purchased Dangerous Driving. It was a solid single player game but the lobbies were dead from the start.
I never found games like these fun with online multiplayer. Lag and desync just wreaks havoc too much with these fast action arcade racers. I much prefer to play against AI.

Doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck for people like you though unfortunately.

Dangerous Driving is horse shit. Buy the original Burnout Revenge instead.

Eh I thought it was good. It’s basically burnout revenge 2.
don't kid yourself, burnout revenge is leagues better. if dangerous driving would've been burnout revenge 2 it would've killed the franchise.

edit: seriously, don't buy this game. it's awful. it's the shitty direct-to-dvd version of burnout. get burnout paradise instead. or revenge if you have a xbox. don't buy into the nostalgia. burnout was never this bad. it holds up. dangerous driving just sucks.

What time is it?
I can not recommend Hot Wheels Unleashed enough. I platinumed it about two weeks ago and had a lot of fun. Especially online!

But... yeah... i feel you. Not enough arcade racing games to be satisfied. Let's hope the current generation will be a bit better.

I couldn't get into Hot Wheels Unleashed. As weird as it is to say, it feels stuck between a simulation game and an arcade game while satisfying the itch for neither.

It’s not, but whatever.
its probably the worst arcade racer since flat-out 3, but okay.

The game plays almost exactly the same as Burnout 3 and Burnout Revenge.
just way way worse. burnout 3 (as revenge had more advanced mechanics) played much snappier. and it wasn't full of glitches. and had physics that worked. and takedowns that felt good. and it was fun. dangerous driving isn't.

I thought lastgen had a pretty decent lineup of arcade racers, I don’t mind the genre moving to indie/smaller devs. From what I played last gen on PS4 (off the top of my head):

Excellent:
Hotshot Racing - cartoonish, emphasis on drifting
Gravel - closest thing to a new Sega Rally
Wreckfest - folkrace with superb driving physics
Horizon Chase - oldschool snes style racing
Dirt 4 - not as arcade as dirt3 but still very much an arcade racer, probably the best rally arcade racer in recent years
DriveClub - all tarmac with super enjoyable tracks and cars
Grip - rollcage-like, fast paced with combat elements, really like this game

Good:
Inertial Drift - stylish with unique driftgameplay
RedOut - wipeout/fzero hybrid ish
Dangerous Driving - burnout kinda game, (dont get the hate?)
Motoracer 4 - surprisingly good
Onrush - weird game modes but the driving is good and it’s unique

Ok:
Sonic Team Racing - Allstar racing was better
Trailblazers - kinda only enjoyable in splitscreen
Radial-G - probably better in VR, stil not a bad game
Xeno Racer - didnt really jive with me but ymmv
GRID - should’ve been better, maybe?
Flatout 4 - very avarage but still decent enough
Need for Speed: Rivals - only nfs that didnt suck last gen

Kinda-not-racers but very good games:
Descenders - mountainbike rougelike
Trackmania Turbo - platform/puzzle racer

Terrible, steer clear:
Carmageddon: Max Damage
Allstar fruit racing

Solid remasters/remakes:
Crash Team Racing
Burnout Paradise
Baja: Edge of Control
Wipout Omega Collection
NFS: Hot Pursuit

Looking to pick up Hot Wheels and Gearclub unlimited soon. Anyone got any other recommendations?
