Nier Automata - does it get better?

People talk about the combat but it isn't very good. It's not bad like the original but it's nothing special.

The story is what carries the game.

I loved how it seemed to almost constantly switch genres, from 3D action adventure to sidescroller to twin stick shooter.

I thought I had figured out how to beat the system, but ending E figured out my tricks and left me with a giant hole when it was done.

I feel like it’s one of those games that has to click with you, like it has some kind of subconscious appeal.

Because I played it and thought it was utter dross, not gonna lie.
Most people get killed by the 1st boss and quit.

I can get that it's bot for everyone, but the game gets so much better once you figure it out

I didn’t get killed by the first boss, and I didn’t struggle to figure it out.

I just thought it was shit.

Ugly dull environments, mindless repetitive combat, off-putting pervy anime vibe, it just really wasn’t for me.
That's fine, I don't expect every game to be for everybody.

Game is awesome but people need to stop playing games and restarting them again and again from the beginning. You could be 10 hours further in the game if you hadn't restarted after 10 hours, obviously...

I tried several times to get into it since it seems to have a special status among a lot of people. But I just didn't like the experience, didn't get it at all. Something may be in there somewhere to those who persist, but it's not for me.

I struggled to get anywhere to OP. Loved the art style. I could feel the FFVII vibes. But it just didn’t hook me at all. Although I can definitely see why so many people love it.

I only restart if I have no clue what I was doing and the control scheme is totally lost on me.

Otherwise I try to figure it out and keep going.

It's worth playing for the music alone. I only played it because it was on gamepass and ended up enjoying it alot!

I absolutely love the popularity of 2B in the nude & sexy cosplay scene, but even though I rank Platinum's Bayonetta 2 as one of my favorite games of its generation, and also enjoyed Transformers Devastation & Astral Chain, Neir Automata is just as tedious and flawed as everybody else here has already stated.

But those nsfw 2B cosplays are more than enough to make me happy the game exists, whooo, great stuff there.

I think it's a great game but... If you're already bored with it now, in Route A, it's not worth continuing in my opinion, and I say this as someone who liked the game.

The reason I'm saying this is because of Route B. The game has 3 stories, the problem is... the second one, route B, is actually nearly identical to the first one, but worse because you're playing with 9S and half of the combat gameplay is removed, replaced by some hacking mini game. It's really bad and very, very repetitive to go through the same thing again but in a worse version.
Route B is really my main huge problem with this game, I will never understand why they did this, because route C, the third story, is actually the real sequel to route A, it's a whole new thing, like the second half of the story, and you get to play with the best character there (A2), but I think a lot of people never even saw this because when they saw route B being the same game again, they probably thought it was just some bonus new game plus that wasn't worth it. Terrible game design decision in my opion.

I still really loved this game, the combats, if you do try to play well and have fun with it, are great. You are never required to do crazy combo and be super skilled, so that may be why people don't think it's that deep, it's only up to you to make your own fun with the gameplay, the game itself doesn't force you to use the whole gameplay. If you're not interesting in having fun with the gameplay outside of what's "required" by the game, then I think it's not worth it to keep playing for the gameplay either, but at the same time, I think someone interested in gameplay in general would be interested in doing fun combos etc in this game without the game forcing you to.

The parts with A2 in Route C were my favorite part of the game, I was just disappointed that route C forces you to often go back to 9S AGAIN, it really felt like the game was trolling me, locking me out of the good gameplay over and over, it was quite frustrating... But there are so many other great qualities that I can't hate the game as a whole, even if I do hate how much the game forces 9S.

My favorite part was actually playing the DLC arena post game with A2, that's where the whole gameplay was unlocked and you could do anything, it was super satisfying. I wish more of the game was like this, because I don't think I would feel like replaying this game again, since the game itself already require you to play in a loop with a lot of repetition before getting to the good stuff.

The true ending is one of the greatest gaming moments of all time, Marianas Trench deep, I'd wager even those who've seen it through don't fully comprehend it. If you fundamentally don't appreciate this brand of hack-n-slash combat though then getting there will be a slog, I personally loved it's relatively simple but satisfying system, chips were cool and I dug the protagonists.

There are some really heavy sidequests to reward those who explore
suicidal robot still resonates all these years later
If you're not feeling it move on, hundreds of other games to play. Oh and Emil's shop music is 💯💯💯.

I'm trying to finish it now on gamepass before it leaves. Honestly replaying the game 3 times to get Ending C, seem's really excessive.

I just started the second playthrough and i wanna continue but i don't know if its worth it.

Question: Is there a way to start Route C on the series X - skipping Route B would be ideal.

As you can see from the replies, the game is incredibly polarizing. I personally loved it, but that feeling didn't really hit until the start of Route C when things started ratcheting up to a conclusion.

Some people who don't like it quit halfway through because they think you have to replay the whole game 3 or 5 times to get the final ending. If you played through Nier Replicant, it makes sense why you would think that, because you had to play through the second half at least 4 times to get the final ending. It was rough.

In Automata, Route A is played, then you basically retread some of your Route A playthrough in Route B, a new mechanic is unlocked and you get some new context, but by and large, Route B is just a 5 hour version of Route A and is the weakest part of the game. Route C takes place after A and B and is 100% new content. Routes D and E are just the endings.

The E (real) ending is one of the most impactful moments in any video game I've ever played.

I was pretty late to the party as well but It was my GOTY back then. I recommend playing once (A route ) then playing once again (B route) and definitely playing it once again (route C). It truly is an amazing game.

After that (C) buy all the missing trophies :)

No, the gameplay doesn't get better. The plot is nuts but you do have to put up with holding the shoot button and mashing to experience it.

I'm sure the combat is great when you spend hours learning how to do crazy stuff, the problem is that you don't ever need to.

It’s tough if your not liking the combat. Maybe try a higher difficulty? Pretty sure you change change it from the menu.

The story definitely gets better, you also get a lot of customization options to change your play style later. As well as some new gameplay mechanics.

If your not digging the world I’d say mainline the story missions. Hope you end up liking it.

It's style over substance, but I like that in media form.

It has more intellectual and philosophical substance than pretty much any other game in existence.

What's possibly more impressive is how Yoko Taro presents it in a way that never feels heavy-handed or preachy; his purpose is to make a game that entertains and surprises, but along the way he takes on huge existential questions and deals with them in remarkably deft and nuanced ways.

Also Waifu's :D

Still, pretty much Matrix like philosophy, it's not really deep. I did a masters in software engineering in AI among my other degrees, it was based on a child thinking applied to AI, so it's a subject that touches me. If I'd be retired I would do another Ph.D. but in Artificial Conscience.

Honestly no.
I forced myself to go through the game 3 times due to being told the story becomes incredible (trust me, it doesn't)
The only redeeming thing about this game is the ost.
If you're not enjoying it now, you most likely never will.

I loved the first play through, hated the 2nd, and was absolutely furious at the 3rd when I had to play 9S. I wanted to play as hot female androids not creepy little boy androids.

I really liked the game and felt it went at a pretty brisk pace. Combat was fast and never overstayed its welcome. Traversal was similarly fast which made sidequests fun to do, jumping through the apocalyptic ruins and deserts. If you don't like it by the time you finish the amusement park then the game isn't for you.

I'm an outlier when it comes to Nier since so many people think it's some brilliant philosophical opus. I thought it was dumb and it never got better for me.

Hated the combat, story and characters. I found it very repetitious even in the first playthrough. Got much worst as you had to play the same story over a 2nd time with the other character.

I played it all the way to the various ends waiting for the big payoff and it never happened for me. But I do realize I'm in the minority so you should take my opinion with a grain of salt.

How did this post get 14 likes? The game absolutely is a brilliant philosophical opus.
If you're unable to appreciate that, the fault is entirely on your own.

Even from a pure gaming point of view you have to appreciate how Automata's narrative structure is so deeply linked to the medium. It is not only a brilliant story, but one that can only be told in a video game.

Bruh, it wasn’t the game’s fault, you just lacked creativity!

LOL, sorry had to take a shot at a certain other thread about another game from 2017.

Anyway, Automata was my GOTY and in my top 10 of all time. I loved the combat, story, cast, and holy shit the music. Also one of the most unforgettable conclusions of all time for me.

But if the gameplay isn’t clicking for you, that’s all good. Don’t force yourself especially since the story can’t be fully appreciated without getting to Ending E (the actual conclusion). Better to bail now if you don’t like the gameplay but might get frustrated not knowing where the story goes.

And hey, you appreciated the music, so:

It's in my top 3 games of the decade for 2010-2019 and one of the best games I've ever played since the 1970s. So many extras like SHMUP gameplay and 8 bit music thrown in to make it epic.

The best part about this game was when I questioned why 2B was so populating considering... 👀

A2 is the much better character choice. The turn around had me floored.
