I mean, I really loved the original trilogy and enjoyed the ones that came after. The 2018 God of War was refreshing and I didn't mind the fresh take either. I like 'em all. I can't pick one.

I can't believe 2018 is winning. The first attempt at transitioning the isometric hack and slash into a third person cinematic adventure, compared to God of War III, the pinnacle of iteration and best in class at everything in the series.

It's either recency bias or young audience. 2018 was a solid game and is nowhere near the mediocre bracket, but it clearly needs work/better ideas to fully realise the best of the series in this new format.

I'd say the biggest issue is that the world is a bit lifeless.

The first one is short (~8 hours) and has an insane difficulty spike at the end.

It has among the highest amount of critical reception and definitely the highest recognition via game of the year awards. So that qualifies it as an objective statement I reckon.
It's still a collection of opinions. I can see saying that it's objectively the most popular, but best doesn't register. But yeah whatever. Not trying to start a thing.

Difficulty spike or skill check though? You can say the same about Daedalus' labyrinth, or even the Archimedes trials in Ascension (before nerf). Even further back in two you had Zeus and that corridor 'enemy run'. Then contrast it against Sigrun in 2018 so I don't that's a strong point to be honest.

There were also the levels in III in the city with civilians running that you could kill. I don't think 2018 had a construct that had more 'life'. It was basically an empty world for Kratos/Atreus that was populated with only story entities.

Never particularly liked the series in the past, so GOW 2018 didn't have to fight that hard to become quickly my favorite.
And I liked it a lot... Up to a point.
Bar a couple of questionable design decisions (like the shitty "EXP system") it was a genuinely great action adventure... Until the last third where it started to feel really rushed and to bloat its own size with dumb horde modes and other recycled content of questionable quality.

I think I played them all except for Ascension and the best one is GOW 2. The PSP ones looked so good at the time and were super fun.

I don’t care about the reboot. Played it to the end and was bored to death. Dark Souls combat copycat mixed with pretentious “one-shot” mo-capped soap-opera drama. Not good. Sue me.

Toss up between God of War 2 and 3 for me.

God of War 2 on the PS2 simply looked like it could have been an early next-gen game. I remember being in San Francisco and seeing it at the Sony Metreon Store and being blown away. Immediately picked it up and played it. GoW3 was such a great conclusion to the trilogy.

I consider GoW 2018 it's own thing and a spin-off of the franchise considering how different it is. An amazing game regardless, but quite different than the other ones. Feels like a good growth and new direction for the series so I look forward to seeing how Ragnarok will help it grow more.

Loved them all but after Gow 3, the formula became a bit stale, as you can see with ascension. They tried to change some things but it didn't work. The 2018 game I love the most, the world, exploration, lite rpg elements, combat and really loved what they've done with the story.

Hard choice. While I loved GoW 2018, the epicness of GoW III from start to finish is unmatched. I also like the Greek mythology better than the Norse one.

But in the end, none of them is bad. Even Ascension wasn't bad (not counting the tracked on multiplayer).

Whoever voted for Ascension...

2 changed the franchise for the better by adding a counter system. It's still tough to go back to 1 without the golden fleece.

Voting in Ascension should be a bannable offense. I'm glad no one voted for that yet.
You know how the internet works. Pointing it out means it now has votes. Unless this was a chess move and that's what you actually wanted.

God of War 3 is my favorite. Epic boss fights with Chronos taking the crown as the best one. Breathtaking scope all around. The introduction with Poseidon is a bar no other video game has surpassed. God of War 2018 is close second, amazing reinvention of a classic series, keeping it fresh while at the same time staying true to the original franchise.

I'm blown away that people think 3 is better than 2. There's no way all those people have played both of them.

It's between 2 and 2018.

Edit: Yes, 3 has an amazing opening. But it never gets as good again after that. You're just going up the mountain, it feels much less like a grand adventure than 2.

GOW4 but not by much, GOW3 still is more brutal has better boss battles and has the more interesting setup/pantheon but 4 has the godlike new combat mechanics and tons of good interesting rewarding content, too much fun, I do hope Ragnarok can improve in those areas though.

Shoutouts to GOW1 tho that is close to 3 for me because I love its setup, and just how freaking brutal it is, the whole chronos back dungeon in particular was awesome, that whole family died just to make that thing lol.

You had me good on that first sentence. We were holding hands and all, sharing picnic baskets, the ocasional gilete… but you had to ruin it all at the end.

2018 is a very different game, but a very good one.

I'm sorry it didn't work out, we had a good run though!

While GOW 2018 was amazing it just didn't have the epic scale and boss battles of 3. GOW3 was truly truly just epic in size and scope.

I like GoW3 the most. I've tried three times to get into 2018 and I couldn't, it was boring and the amount of time I heard boy really fucking bothered me for some rather then just being a big annoyance.

GOW3 hands down.

A different kind of game compared to Sony's modern take on father figure storylines, but comparing both games in videos, GOW3 is much more gory and fun to watch.

Best boss battles by far in the entire series.

3 and 2018 are flawless. Completely different games too so you can literally play them back to back and not feel burnt out.
