To me I always wanted an apple, amazon, tencent etc console. More competition means more content for us. Apple investing heavily into the triple A space or amazon going beyond just Luna giving us more content for a dedicated console or even a third party publisher. I just don't understand why so many gamers want there to just be the big 3...I imagine when Xbox got into the console market for the first time there was a ton of resistence, so to me It's just if its not good don't but it IE stadia...but I'm not mad at google for trying.

I wouldent mind them if they do something new or unique. I had no quarms with the Xbox back in the day for example, they had hits like Halo, oddworld Strangers Wrath, Jade Empire and Knights of the Old Republic.

The issue is to create anything worthwhile you can't just throw a few hundred million at it until you establish yourself, it will take 10's of billions to enter the ring. And quite frankly no one seems to take that seriously.

However if someone did and you could easily tell, I'm sure most gamers would embrace them as long as they have the killer apps.

Yeah, we need another contender with the focus of making games more mainstream for oldies.

Not really resistant. But these specific examples don’t do it with any interest in gaming itself and only for business (money). If the 2 go hand in hand, I’m not against it at all. Then again, I can still choose to not buy their products if they wouldn’t be to my liking. Doesn’t really matter in the end.

It would just be more shit to buy. Oh cool, the Apple Excelsior 7000 gets timed exclusive Silent Hills that will come to PC a year later and other consoles two years later. How annoying.

We already see this with TV subscription services. Hulu, Disney, HBO, Netflix, Paramount, AppleTV all have separate rotating catalogs with their own exclusives. Bleh.

I don’t really care either way but i think the 3 console (+ pc and mobile) system works fine for what it is now. Theres not really a huge gap in the market for more consoles.

I think if and when streaming every takes over a lot more people will jump in

Apple has 1.65 BILLION active iOS devices. That's 1.65 BILLION people in their ecosystem. If they release a game console hold on to your plastic boxes...

Not resistant, just sceptical. It takes a multi-decade vision and the appetite to throw tens of billions at it - if you don't see that up front (ala Stadia) then how can we be anything other than pessimistic?

Feels like new consoles are always hitting and failing, i would love to see an apple console but if it’s going to be an Apple TV with mobile games I’ll pass.

They are afraid of competition, it threatens their favorite box or their PC ports.
Just means ive got to buy another box, 4 is enough. I dont have enough hdmi ports as is.

The way things are going though PC is becoming a modern day VCR, id like less not more and might get my wish sooner or later.

The response is usually:

"And those 1.65 billion people overpay $1000 for their devices"

Then in the same breath:

"Who on earth would overpay $1000 for an Apple console. That market doesn't exist."

I'm not resistant to a company actually making an effort to make a good product. I would be resistant to a company trying to cash in by making a phone game console for your tv.

Resistant is probably the wrong word for that. Disinterested and unimpressed are more accurate.

Probably because more companies entering the game industry with hardware is a bad thing for consumers. We all saw want what happened to streaming when more companies tried to get in on it. Streaming started off as a better alternative to cable now it's just as bad. We already have all the hardware we need, if any new companies want to get into the game industry it would be best to just make games for the hardware that already exists.

i only want sega back in console market

I do to but realistically it's not gonna happen.

TBH I think the big reason why is because people are afraid of more industry acquisitions and consolidation, which is fair. If you're a new company stepping in as a platform holder, and you need content for your ecosystem, well companies like Microsoft have shown that you can go after massive 3P publishers to satisfy that need. I know that Embracer and Tencent have been making moves prior to 2020 in that regard, but they haven't really purchased any massive gaming publishers, and they don't have a product ecosystem (be it console or centralized proprietary service) they're using their content as leverage to gain market-share with (i.e they rely on the established ecosystems that already exist between Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft/PC/mobile).

OTOH, if there's one company with the tech & resources to really do something that could positively disrupt the market, it's probably Apple. Their forays into core gaming so far kind of remind me of Sony's with developing the sound processor for the SFC and creating the Sony ImageSoft label for games, building up experience in making & publishing games on other platforms like the Sega CD before finally rolling with their own console a few years later. Apple's movement isn't 1:1 the same, but there are similarities, and lately they're pushing for some big strides in encouraging more core games into the macOS ecosystem. They've been working with developers from the core gaming scene for Apple Arcade with games like Fantasian and Yu Suzuki's upcoming game. They're rumored to be looking into purchasing EA. The signs of interest are there.

Ultimately thanks to the fact they make their own silicon and already have a stable of known product lines, I can see a few years from now Apple just decides to make a "premium" Apple TV device in the $400/$500 price bracket with specs comparable to what you can probably expect 10th-gen consoles to try and aim at matching (or surpassing). A top-end Apple TV device they can advertise as playing a growing list of core AAA games between it and their Mac line of laptops and desktops, with some packaged controller plus support for other controllers, probably a media remote, large enough internal storage for game downloads, and being able to purchase games like RE Village instead of just needing to sub to Apple Arcade to access them (which wouldn't be possible with new releases anyway, unless Apple pays a lot of money to publishers for it). It could probably also have support for whatever VR/AR device they're working on (supposedly) as well.

The release timing I think would be the potential disruption, because while I don't see 10th-gen consoles launching until near the end of this decade (2028 earliest), some type of Apple TV device that's potentially more capable than the rumored PS/Xbox mid-gen Pro refreshes could definitely launch around the same time as those, say 2024-2025. Even if it ultimately got outsold by those (I don't think it would, TBH), Apple could still depend on loyal customers to support it and knowing them it would not so much lead in marketing as a gaming device but more so a very capable premium entertainment device that can also play current AAA games.

Of course I think the real question from there though is, would Apple invest in actual game software development internally? I think they would at least continue to fund and sign deals for some exclusive content like they've been doing for Apple Arcade, but actually developing their own AA or AAA 1P software? That's ultimately still an unknown. It's not like they lack the money to do so, but that's the least complicated part of the equation. Which is why if that's their aim, the quickest route would be to acquire a publisher.

And that takes it back to the acquisition side of things, something a lot of people are tired seeing happen. Personally, I think it depends on who's doing the acquiring and at what frequency. I don't think a company like Apple would need more than a single publisher, I don't even think they would probably feel the need to keep all of that content exclusive. So you would see them do basically what Microsoft is looking to do now with ABK, or Sony with Bungie, and if Apple were smart they'd keep exclusivity locked down to only the more obscure or any brand new IP.

Regardless, it's a really interesting potential and I think more people need to pay attention to what Apple's doing WRT gaming more closely, and seriously.

Who is resistant?
Which gamers are resistant....is there a thread or something that can give some context to the whole premise of this thread?

P.S Bring them all in.
As long as they still port to PC.
Buying all the consoles would end up costing me as much as a good PC, so id rather just have a good PC and play all the games in one place.

I am ok with it but they know their own risks and they have calculated it. Microsoft was the only one that truly brute forced it's way into relevancy.

Just more exclusivity bullshit you have to deal with in order for them to get you to buy another ugly piece of plastic to sit under your TV. It's just not needed (for me at least). This is why I've moved over to being mostly a PC gamer over the past 5 years.

Imagine Apple's console - you have to buy a controller separately, an hdmi cable is not included in the box etc. Games cost 100€ each. That would certainly be something.

I already invest in two ecosystems. I don’t need a third.

The only way I’d remotely consider it is if they came out with a box that smashed both PS5 and Xbox specs and have the games to prove it. A new console on the market would need buy-in from publishers as well.

I'm perfectly happy with my Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. I don't need nor want any other company especially Apple, Amazon or Google to ever enter the console gaming market. Let them stay the way they are and keep doing what they're doing which for me is nothing.

That's my main gripe against a potential Apple console. But you're being generous saying they would use titanium. It would be aluminum and still priced the same.

Gamers are hesitant because everyones been brought up to cheer for team sports. " our teams going to win!! yay!" In reality its the best time to have multiple devices to play the same games as everyting is standardized now.

business wise it doesn't make sense to anyone but companies with large installed user bases like apple and google.

More competition means more content for us

100% untrue. Right now you get all of their (amazon, google, etc) content on boxes you already own. If they released their own box they wouldn't suddenly have or make more content out of nowhere. They would buy or moneyhat content away from other boxes. There is no such thing as 'more content' out of nowhere. All it would result in, is having to buy one more box to play the same content you always have.

Now I'm not against more competition, I don't care which multibillion dollar company gets my money. But on a personal level I don't need yet another box. I dislike needless clutter so I generally focus all my gaming on a single console. Even if money is no issue, I don't really have the time or patience to invest in multiple ecosystems.

Also, I dislike switching from one controller to the other :p Going from the Switch to the Xbox or vice versa always takes me a little time to adjust to the reversed face buttons.

The only thoughts I'd have is that in order for somebody to seriously break into the console market as it exists today, they'd have to buy a couple massive companies (EA/Ubisoft/Take Two/etc.) or tons of midsized studios. So if they're not fully committed or immediately successful they could trash a bunch of studios in the process. A 4th company coming in with a serious effort into the gaming business, I'd be excited because new companies bring new ideas and competition brings out the best in everybody. I just don't want another big company to come in and then get bored after a year and give up

Do people actually think apple would make non family friendly games? Or have a half decent store (Fortnite and other pulled apps ring a bell??).

Plus they would be worse than Nintendo when it comes to pricing/sales in in store. I just don't see them adding anything of value to gaming, as they would more than likely make big games, exclusive to their eco system (laaaaame)

As a consumer, there is always the risk that a new console won't be supported after a couple of years, and we end up with an expensive brick.

the companies you mentioned have no Idea what they're doing when it comes to games and they'll fudge it somehow...
Plus in this age of consolidation its always a fear that they come in buy a publisher and really mess things up.

Nah, i don't think anybody mind more companies entering gaming, it's just that the ones that are entering or want to enter recently are horseshit (Google, Apple, Amazone ect)

I mean isn't that kind of what the Apple TV is? I have children and pay for Apple Arcade. One subscription lets all of use download as many ad and microtransaction free games as we like. It's been great. And there have been a few occasions where we all wanted to play something together so we will just pick up the same game we were playing on our devices and play it on the apple tv with bluetooth connected controllers. It's been great. A lot of these IOS games translate really well onto the tv.

Just for the design factor I'd be interested in an apple console. My main worry would be if it was an apple arcade machine and not a true console. But if they entered the AAA console market I would be interested.

I voted no. I just don’t want to see more 3rd party games go exclusive if Apple or Amazon needs a hook to sell consoles.
