343i are introducing a digital currency to the Master Chief Collection

For players who are new to the MCC, or who may not have dedicated much time specifically to unlocking items during the seasonal updates, or are simply completionists looking to catch the last outstanding items they need, we are internally exploring a potential new feature for the future in the form of purchasable Spartan Points.

It is prudent to note here that we are happy with the current system of how players earn Spartan Points, by completing challenges and levelling up through play. This would be an optional, additive alternative for players who might find the vast scope of content to be an intimidating amount of playtime and want to get ahead on (or skip) the grind, or maybe want to grab specific items they want (we all have our favorites!)

If they aren’t changing the system, I’m fine with this. Especially if it means MCC going FTP sometime down the line so that it doesn’t require a Gold subscription and attracts more players.

MCC- still some of the most fun MP around.

... adding micro-transactions to the eight year old last-gen collection of twenty year old Xbox games a year after the latest cross-gen F2P entry came out? A collection so fundamentally broken the CEO had to issue a written public apology and gave away Halo 3: ODST as compensation to stem the mass refunds, that took over half a decade to actually not be fucked?

I'm guessing their metrics look the same as what we can see: Halo Infinite utterly bombed, Master Chief collection is stealing its players and close to out-performing it, and they're missing all of their revenue projections. Adding microtransactions into the game that people are actually playing makes sense if you want to actually make money. But holy cow - no one else but 343i would try this.

Spot on with everything. The bit in bold is definitely what the higher ups think will happen. What will actually happen is that this will be the final spit in the face for the most die hard fans of the series, for some it’ll be the last straw.

If people are dumb enough to buy it more power to them.
For the MCC it would take you literally years to unlock all the stuff from all the different seasons if you just starting playing now.
I put 100s of hours into the game and aint anywhere close to unlocking it all.
Some idiots will buy it. I always said it was like doctors and lawyers buying that shit - people who could actually afford it.

Its like the people who spend $200 to unlock a tier X tank (singular) in World of Tanks - something that takes about 8 months of constant play to unlock regularly.

So I just checked Steam charts, since no one else has balls to show anything, and Halo Infinite has 1,000 more players at the current time over Halo MCC(4k to 3k) one being FTP. It would not surprise me to see EA and Dice do somthing with BFV since it basically has seen a huge resurgence with 20k avg to BF2042 at 8K and dropping like a rock in water.

How about the last CoD where to level guns you have to spend 100'sHrs to level guns so you can use them also in WZ. There is one popular player who pays college kids to do it for him. Thats why all the P2W doesnt bother me, everyone is either cheating or abusing the system to their advantage.

We're back to arcade gaming I see. Wayne and Garth would be fuming.

Next Halo Infinite update video:

343i Guy: "So we're changing Master Chief into this gelatinous green cube and he's going to be eating warriors... in a medieval village... and theres going to be sort of a chieftain to all these warriors..."
Danger-haired woman: "Gelatinous cube eats village, I think its terrific"

That sounds awful - either way its fucking dumb. The way these modern games basically force you to play them constantly to unlock shit - some people dont have the time and they just pay up in real money - its madness to me.

For Halo in particular though, all the unlocks are ultimately for worthless cosmetics - so if people want to buy this shit let them be dumb.

Halo Infinite isn't making as many Spartan Bucks™ as we'd envisaged. So we're going to be making bank on our other Gamepass Halo game that might just have a larger sustained population.

Jokes aside I don't really mind as they're leaving the free to earn stuff well alone by the sound of it. I know I probably would have shelled out a couple of bucks for the specific armour I wanted rather than working through the mountains of content MCC has these days.

Bolder wouldn’t bother me. Love MCC so much

Thinking about it this might just be the MTX modus operandi kick 343 need to go back to the Bungie era before 4, 5 & Infinite. Reextended like they did with H2A rather than the divide of esports vs BTB 343 seems stuck on with 5 and Infinite. Make a Battle Royale off of H2A. Fuck Infinite.

Secretly I want Hoberman's BR game to be an evolution of H2A over Infinite, that would make my gaming year.

Poor Minty having to roll out of bed to this possibility -

343i are obviously sick of people negatively comparing Halo Infinites cash shop to the MCC.

So instead of improving Infinite they decided they want to make MCC worse... and people call it "concern trolling" when you bring up the slippery slope argument, well fellas here's it is.

If 343 where really invested in "improving the new player experience" they could let players earn points past rank 100 again... boom done, steady trickle of tokens but no... let's charge for it.

343 trying to nab those whales but I don't think whales are playing MCC.
Only the finest gamers play MCC.

In all seriousness, I don’t mind as they’ve more than made up for the broken launch. They went back and meticulously fixed decade old PC ports, added features and pushed out the draw distance. Even with Infinites downfalls, MCC makes me a happy Halo fan.

this is a very rare occasion where I honestly have no issue with this.

the issue with such currencies being purchasable with real money is usually that it automatically means that you can't be sure if the systems in the game haven't been designed in a way to make you buy shit with real money.

in this case we can be sure that it wasn't designed that way because the system they have in place has been there for years at this point and the purchasable currency is clearly an afterthought and was not part of the design process.

and also, at this point, I'll take anything that has the chance to make MCC more relevant again. while it is gaining players this might actually help bring in more people with money to spend that were too intimidated by having 7 full battlepasses to complete to unlock shit.. and if they wanna waste their money while helping MCC's population by doing that, so be it

we're almost there guys!
