I ignored my own advice, pre-purchased F1 22, and am now paying the price

I'm fairly adamant, and vocal, against pre-purchasing games. Even before the debacles of Cyberpunk and BF2042, I had learned well enough not to do that. It's not worth the risk, because the end result, more often than not, is that I will have paid a company for an unfinished product, so that I might perform QA for them.

Bullshit. No more.

That is, until a couple of weeks ago when I pre-purchased the EA F1 22 Champions Edition on Steam. :pie_mrsmith:

Doing so gave me 3-days early access, which I normally don't give a shit about and would never pay for, but this time means i can play the game today through Thursday, which affords me more playing time vs a Friday release, since my weekend is booked pretty tight. Plus, native VR.

So fuck it. Let's go!

Well, they fucked the Steam launch. Whether it was Steam or EA's failure I don't know, but it released about 10 hours late. It didn't impact me really, since I only would've had time to mess with some settings and shit before starting work, but it screwed the Euros and Brits pretty hard.

What did affect me, and I'm pretty fucking pissed about it, is that wheel support is also quite fucked at the moment. A lot of people, myself included, who have wheel-and-pedal setups aren't seeing the game recognize their hardware, and many of them, myself included, are running the same hardware configurations that worked just fine in F1 2021. Thus, can't play the game.

So, Day 1 of 3 wasted so far, and I feel like an ass.

Never. fucking. again. :messenger_pouting:

The only game I ever pre-ordered was Elden Ring for Steam. Needless to say performance was ass for a while until people figured out work-arounds and patches stared coming out.

Still I'm not upset because I got a discount for pre-ordering, but I can understand your frustration, OP.

I told myself this years ago after fo4 but then of course I pre-order mass effort Andromeda. Fuck I don't think I've even played 10 hours of it.

Unfortunately pre ordering is what feels like a ploy to feed on people's emotions because gaming is usually a passionate pass time and it's very exciting to most people to guarantee the feeling of ownership/access being digital or physical to a new release game.. Something to look forward to!

The gaming industry uses that to manipulate the consumer with fancy edited trailers and special bonuses to get you to pre order, only to find out that they have underdelivered and in some cases provided you with a broken mess of a game. They get away with a lot more now promising patch fixes etc.

And we all just take it because gaming is something we love and sometimes never learn because we are creatures of habit!

I stay away from preordering like it’s cancer, there are however some developers or games that I would give them a shot based on their track record. But even then preorders typically don’t offer any benefit to me personally to preorder even for games I’m looking forward to the most.

Now the important question?....Have you actually learn your lesson?. 🤣😂🤣😂

Yeah, not great when things don't go as planned but it happens....even if you had not pre-ordered it, the launch issues could still have affected you on release day so hopefully you will come out ahead anyway!

Luckily for me I was able to play early on Origin since I have the Premier account since I forgot to cancel it last month. I have all Fanatec equipment and a NLR motion seat which all worked with no issues. I played for a couple of hours and didn't have any bugs or crashes. I tried a couple of races in VR using my Rift S since my Quest 2 was not charged and it wasn't that great. I was able to turn up the graphics to high with a 2080ti and it ran fine, but the draw distance was awful and blurry which really took away from the experience.

So you're a hypocrite, you're dumb, and a liar. Ouch.

More importantly, which wheel is not working? Fanatec DD?
Got some construction work going on at home, so won't be able to touch the game for a month at least, hope whatever issue they have gets solved in the meantime.

Buying it for VR 💪

Why do you thought it would be different this time? Never say fuck it and let's go if you're not ready to bite the bullet.

No matter how good a launch is, remember you'll always get a better version for less money later.

This is very unique to this kind of media and most people seem to except it as 'how it is' and probably wouldn't in other areas. Imagine buying books, where the author and publisher says: "sorry about the 2. act and the messy sentence structure, and missing adjectives, and switched syllables in the prologue. We'll fix it but thanks for moneys, suckers!"

For some strange reason people are still okay with taking (high) chances of a compromised product, game that is, that's preventing their enjoyment a lot or to some extent at least.

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
The last time i preordered was for SIFU. Mainly because i was very excited for the game and they offered 48h early access for 5€ more. Never bought into early availability before. The early access was a mess and i was barely able to play some hours before the official launch.

The game itself however was very good.

Never again!

How much difference is there between F1 21 and F1 22 other than the name and some new cars?
Sounds like the same cashgrab annual releases as Fifa.

Pre-ordering means day 0 $70 next-gen purchases.

I don’t even buy games day 1 let alone pre-order lol.

I feel your pain from past transgressions tho (Mass Effect Andromeda/Madden ‘18). You’ll only learn when it hits you where it hurts and you’ve lost out on an entire $70 to a game you don’t even want.

At least you’ll still get enjoyment of it eventually.

What is even the point of pre ordering digital games? I can understand physical if they come with limited amount collector item but like this...you get a golden gun, 3 extra med packs or in this case an early access lol. Ihavent pre ordered a single game in my life. Its day 0 on the shop or i drive my bike 10 mins to a physical store and get it there.

Catphish Catphish I feel for you. I swore after NMS that I’d never preorder again, then I preordered BF2042 🤕.

It’s rare I get excited over a game these days, but occasionally what appears to be a gem ( or so I think will be a gem) is about to be released my heart takes over and preorders. Like you, never again.

It’s hard to accept, but many of our favourite studios are no longer the talent they once were. Many of the talent that made up these studios have long since departed, leaving nothing but a husk of what they once were.

I just don’t understand why people preorder video games, it literally makes no sense to me. You’re moving money from your pocket to theirs way ahead of time (and usually at a premium) for something that is almost never going to be difficult to obtain. And will likely be far cheaper if you just wait for a couple of months.

The only upside is that you get to play it immediately, which I guess could be appealing if you have the patience of an 8 year old.

But even the limited editions with the tacky plastic statues and stuff, just why?

(Obviously I do actually get why, people are impatient and/or like decorating their home with plastic tatt, but yeah, it’s not something I can relate to at all.)

never go full preorder

the gaming industry doesnt deserve it right now. not until they stop releasing broken games

And thats why we had fallout 76, cyberpunk 2077, etc etc etc ... as long as players dont give a f* about their money, the industry will never change, it will only get worse and worse as they progressively push games as unfinished as possible and fnished it later.

You should try Assetto Corsa F1 mod or Automobilista 2.SO MUCH better and more realistic physics/force feedback
