With the news that the Red Dead remaster was shelved by Rockstar, I finally bit the bullet and got the game set up on an emulator. It's the only way I'm ever going to get to experience it now as a PC gamer.

I've long wanted to play the game obviously and having finally gotten the opportunity, it's kind of crazy how good it is. It lived up to every expectation I had of it. The writing, characters, scenery, music, atmosphere, rock-solid gameplay and controls - everything is so good. I can't even imagine what it was like to play this game in 2010.

Also, as someone who has only played the first three or four chapters of Red Dead 2 without really getting deep into it, it's really made me see that game in a different light, and I'm now able to appreciate the improvements and the greatness of the series as whole a lot more. And the story of course. Its weird how the first game acts like the sequel had already come out. Looking forward to a proper Red Dead 2 playthrough now and seeing all the areas from the first game.

It's also insane to think Rockstar brought Red Dead out the same year as GTA IV's DLC was wrapping up, and just a year before LA Noire.

I always felt like I was really missing out by not getting to play this, and I totally was. I feel like my whole life as a gamer has been a lie. What a series Red Dead is, man.

How i wish we get a remake with the sequel's graphics.I remember finishing RDR 2 in 2018 and immediatelly starting this on the 360 but then there was some heavy rumours that we would actually get the remake and i stopped.Kinda regret it now but i was so sure the remake was real since more than half the game's map is already completed!

I blame fucking GTA Online for everything modern Rockstar hasn't done.

I'm a big fan of westerns and I prefer the first one over the 2nd. RDR1 just felt like a true western with it's environments, characters, story, music. I absolutely hated the ridiculous ass story and tone in RDR2. I loved all the little details and completed almost everything in RDR2, but RDR1 just holds a special place in my heart. Rockstar really went downhill during when GTAV released.

Currently playing it on a PS3 and boy am I having a hard time liking it.

First it looks and run really bad, yes the sunsets and night time are nice looking but everything else is so bleak and empty. Im only 6-7 hours in so maybe it’ll get better.

Second, Im not finding it particularly fun to play. Controlling the horse is a mess, shooting is just ok and melee combat is atrocious. I don’t know, maybe it’s showing its age and Im spoiled by modern games.

Finally, the story and the main character so far are doing nothing to me. Again, Im still early in the game so maybe I’ll change my opinion on that.

I’ve seen so many people praising the game for so long that I can’t help but feel disappointed by what I’ve experienced so far.

Same. A remaster would be ideal imo, but even then, a native PC port would be great to have. At least that way the modding community can actually go on to "remaster" it themselves.
The first game was both critically & commercially successful and is still extremely popular. So I don't understand why they never bothered or aren't proactive about porting it.

I have to agree. I like a lot of Rockstar's output from GTAIV to GTAV, but Red Dead Redemption is easily the high watermark for me. Playing it on Xbox BC is great.

better protagonist and physics. Better ambient music. I prefer the artstyle and aesthetic of the old west desert scene than RDR2s locale. And RDR2s dialogue system isnt even some groundbreaking thing. RDR1 had the same thing

This.. or I'd settle for an enhanced port on PC. Crazy how they've milked GTA V for all its worth but neglect RDR1.

The OST for that game is just sublime.

Tried it this year on Series S and found it incredibly boring. So much horse riding along uneventful paths & braindead easy combat.

If you vibe with the setting & story I can see it being amazing. But the gameplay is nothing to write home about. I think thats why I liked Vice City so much even tho its not that amazing of a game mechanically speaking, cuz of the aesthetics & atmosphere.

After I got to that part of RDR2, I truly thought we would get the first one as dlc. It would look amazing, but unfortunately, that’s not the Rockstar that I know anymore.

Went to the riverside, next to Mexico and just let the sunset do its magic … until a wild cougar jumped me, felled me down the hill I was standing on right into the water. Dead. We both laughed so hard. Great memory.

Personally never cared for RDR1. Felt like a weaker, blander, emptier GTA 4.

Meanwhile RDR2 was one of the greatest games of all time, IMO. Amazing from start to finish.

I replayed RDR a few months prior to RDR2 releasing. I mostly stuck to the story missions and those have aged poorly. I don't think RDR2 is great in that regard either, sadly. One thing that has always stuck out to me in RDR is that it had some great characters but was generally held back by the writing, which like GTA can often feel sophomoric. The best example I can give is one of the first Stranger missions you encounter has you picking flowers for the wife of an elderly gentleman. Once you complete the task, instead of what could have been a sweet moment, you are greeted with the old man and the long rotted corpse of his wife. While I have a ton of criticisms about RDR2, it showed a lot more restrain in that regard. I'll always remember Hamish fondly and I proudly rode Buell until I rolled the credits. Some of RDR2's main cast gets a little cartoonish but the ensemble works better in totality over the original where I only found Bonnie and Landon to be believable, likeable characters.

I loved exploring the world in 2, but 1 as a whole is far more memorable to me. That ride into Mexico is one of my all time favorite moments in gaming, and the ending is a masterpiece.

Red Dead 2 = Red Dead Redemption (1)
Red Dead 3 = Red Dead Redemption 2

Also, the studio that makes Red Dead isn't the same as the one that makes GTA. Two totally different studios, although they will help each other. North makes GTA and San Diego does Red Dead.

I enjoyed Redemption 2 (RD3) but it was tedious and boring at times. Overall I prefer Redemption (1) (RD2) especially with that amazing expansion of Undead Nightmare.
