Phil Spencer published a letter today explaining Microsoft's view on the deal once again: 'gaming for everyone, everywhere'

He also confirms that Overwatch, Diablo and Call Of Duty are headed to Game Pass

In doing so, we will pursue a principled path. We’ve heard that this deal might take franchises like Call of Duty away from the places where people currently play them. That’s why, as we’ve said before, we are committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation on the same day the game launches elsewhere. We will continue to enable people to play with each other across platforms and across devices. We know players benefit from this approach because we’ve done it with Minecraft, which continues to be available on multiple platforms and has expanded to even more since Mojang joined Microsoft in 2014. As we extend our gaming storefront across new devices and platforms, we will make sure that we do so in a manner that protects the ability of developers to choose how to distribute their games.

They really want everyone to be sure PlayStation won't lose access to the COD IP i see. Them mentioning Minecraft seems good as well. That's what i thought.

This was a given though no?
There's a plethora of certain folk that think CoD will never go to Game Pass, lmao.

Of course. Sony will make Microsoft tons of money to fund their games and CoD is the main reason to make regulators bat an eyelash in the first place. Easy win here. Now whether CoD is on PlayStation in a decade from now is another point altogether.

Two questions:

As long as their acquisition isn't through this bascially is an independent deal from that?
Like PS recently getting THPS. AB is still doing their business alone. Or is this just a long term promise even if not yet actually through?

And WoW on that picture means it drops its own subscription fee?

Good timing, you can play CoD MW before MW2 comes out if you haven't already.

Thinking back to that thread a while ago, some people arguing that's not what Brad Smith meant.

So not even timed exclusives? Interesting.

But still ... I don't believe new COD games will be available on Gamepass on day one.
That's an odd prediction. One of Microsoft's marketing points for Game pass is Xbox game studio games available on Game pass same day as release. Why would Call of Duty be the exception once it is under the Xbox game studios banner?

What would happen to MS if this deal was passed on the proviso that CoD remains multi platform but in 10 years time they pull the plug on the PS version?
Aren't they going to keep CoD multiplatform? I thought that was their plans. So I guess it wouldn't do anything to them?

It seems CoD will still come to PS5 but Microsoft will just market it as being best played on Xbox and likely make it day 1 release on gamepass so you can either pay $70 to play it on PS5 or get it as part of your GP sub. That's still a huge blow to Sony and I think Microsoft will be happy with that.

The same thing that always happens. Things change, times change, and lawyers get paid millions to go to court and argue their case. If people were paying attention, they'd realize MS said CoD would remain multiplatform since DAY ONE. They also keep reiterating this. Nobody is going to care if, in a decade, they change their mind and there isn't legal stipulation or consessions halting them from doing so, and even if there is, that's what their big money lawyers are for.

Yes what I am saying is in 10 years time when there’s been a near complete overhaul at board level at MS, what if they were to decide they didn’t want CoD on PS anymore. Would they be able to do that if they’ve given assurances at this stage?

If the mentioned games hit Gamepass day 1 then I honestly can’t understand how the service is going to be sustainable?
Because its arbitrage.

Rev cut from increased 'total' store transactions > lost revenue from those games.

Well if Microsoft own Call of Duty they can do what they want with it if the deal passes.

If everything goes through and the sale is finalised in 2023 then Microsoft could pull CoD from PS in 2024. If a condition of the sale being made is that CoD remains Multiplatform then yeah they'd have to follow that but I can't see it happening. This is about competition. If Microsoft own Call of Duty then it's not anti-competitive. Sony would just need to try make a competiting product which they could be doing with the purchase of Bungie.

I have a bad feeling this means I will need Windows 10 to play Starcraft II or Overwatch eventually, but whatever. By the time it comes to pass, I probably won't care anymore one way or another.

Probably? At worst it'll just be a political issue. Don't think there'd be any legal barriers though
