Would you agree that remakes have become a bit of an annoying fad?

I've got nothing against repackaging old games to make them run on modern systems and with some things refurbished (resolution, framerate, controls) so that you could comfortably replay or experience those classics for the first time.

You know, kinda like what Night Dive or Beamdog are doing.

But publishers really need to pack that remake shit in. It's a waste of resources that would be better spent making something new and it's rarely even worth the hassle.

I get why publishers are doing it. To them, playing to our naive nostalgia is

But for someone such as myself, who is just bored of seeing the same shit over and over, it's annoying as hell. I think I preferred when they were making clones of whatever watershed title was popular at the time (COD4, Gears, God of War, GTA, etc.) It was at least SOMETHING. And now they don't even bother with that. They just put fresh makeup on some old corpse of a game and put it out again because they know we're idiots and we'll buy it again.

Yeah I'm with you on this one, we are getting far too many remakes.

Some of them are great, like the RE ones, but others like TLOU or Dead Space seem unnecessary to me, as those are basically the same games but with better graphics afaik.

Reverse groomer.
i especially hate when people say they should 'remake the first game in a franchise to gauge interest in it'
like no.... just make a remaster and if it sells well make a new game. or even make a reboot.
i am a bit hypocritical since there are a few remakes i'm excited for (RE4, Max Payne) but i still want new content

If it isn't stopping devs from releasing new games it's one thing... but as we all know that isn't the case.

Capcom is doing okay. Where they have released a couple remakes, but there's also been new stuff every couple years. Then on the other side of the spectrum you have the shit turds that are Bethesda and Rockstar...

Not a fan of EVERYTHING being remade, but sometimes it can be interesting to play a good remake. I think the most interesting remakes would be ones where the original team decides to remake their old work, rather than a new team remaking someone elses old work, since it would be closer to the original in that regard. Now, if you want to play a remake because it is a bit further from the original, well, I can understand that, too.

The sucker consumers are to blame; not the publishers. I'm a sucker consumer, so give me my damn remaster of Midnight Club 2 and 3! Oh yeah, and a high poly remaster of Unreal 1. Yeah, I know the title is remakes, but wah.

Eh, it depends really.

It doesn't irritate me as much as it does with movies. I feel like game remakes have a chance to improve on things due to what current tech can do, whereas movie remakes generally feel like a massive step back due to a lack of practical effects and they're usually much more tame in comparison to the original.

The thing I do have an issue with is when a remake or remaster comes out and then the original game is delisted. That's complete BS to me. There should always be room for the OG and Remake/Remaster. Classics are classics for a reason and no amount of modern spin justifies erasing the original product.

Eh, I'm okay with it to some degree. I like revisiting my favorite games even without new bells and whistles, so sometimes a re-release is a welcome thing. That said, I prefer remasters over remakes for the most part. I don't necessarily want to see the original game altered - I just want to play it on my current system. It does work out well sometimes, though, (eg. Resident Evil 1 and 2) so I'm hesitant to just dismiss it full stop. I figure this is a trend, and like all the others, it will eventually fade. Or they'll run out of games to remake. Whichever comes first...hopefully not the latter.

It's not that remakes are inherently a bad thing...there are a few problems that plague recent remakes:

In case of REs 2 and 3 reimaginings:
-They cut content
-No options for fixed camera or anything to show how far they've come since the originals thus erasing them

For other remakes, they came too soon. I'd say timing remakes properly should be more of a priority. Reeks of needlessly milking the players

Yes they are annoying and yes I wish all these studio would focus on releasing new games instead.

But I'm not too bothered by it because so far it doesn't seem to be getting in the way of new releases. Yeah I find a TLOU1 remake absolutely unnecessary but Sony still had a pretty solid year of new releases with Horizon, GT7, God of War (+ Ghostwire: Tokyo as a timed exclusive). Square is milking FF7 to the last drop with their multi part approach and now Crisis Core but we are still getting stuff like FFXVI, Forspoken and Octopath Traveler 2 next year , etc.

One could also make the argument that some of these remakes at least have some effort put into them. It's not like we had a lack of re-releases last gen, except they'd just port the game, increase the resolution and call it a day.

I'd say yes but I'm a hypocrite as two of my most wanted games are remakes (RE4, Ishin).

Wouldn't count buying Ishin as hypocrite since it's not only a remake but also the first time the game will be released in the west.

Problem with this argument is that there is a whole generation of people that haven’t played these games and so these are new titles. So to you and me it may be annoying, but to the younger generation it’s just a new game.

It’s easier money for a company to do this as well. This isn’t going away. It’s not a fad.

I think they do need to wait a while longer before some of these cash grabs (looks at Sony).

Depends, remake of old games like SH2 or FF7 are great. Remake like TLOUR is a joke and unnecessary.

Of course you have also cases like RE3 remake, where it was worth to remake, but Capcom blew with this one (already said why many times), that's why i'm not preordering RE4 remake this around.

Thats just another reason why I liked RE8 Village. Many fans hate on it, but if it wasn’t for Village we would have THREE remakes in a row. Its good for devs to make new stuff too.

Holy shit YES!!

Current generation is probably one of the most boringly stagnant ones so far.
Some socks are in definite need of being yanked up into their appropriate position.

Fuck, yes.

Sign of an industry lacking enough creativity and experimentation.
Came here to say this. Creatively bankrupt and relying on people buying old games with a coat of paint.

Games like RE2 Remake aren’t quite as bad as they are a modern take on an old game rather than it just being prettier.

Actual remakes? Not at all. I love them.

Almost all of them have been games i love and still replay. Having remakes of them is even better.

Speaking of which, where is my Dragon Quest 3 remake? Hurry up, SquareEnix.

No. Not really.
There are NOT THAT MANY.... 1-3 games is not that much.
I would prefer MORE ports/simple remasters that do 4k60 and put the game on latest systems.
Remakes are a hit or miss due to changing art style and so on.

That said. I prefer either real remake that changes a lot of stuff and not just graphics or a simple remaster

Yes and no. Most of the time I would prefer the effort go to making new games over remakes or remasters. But some games are so good or underrated that they deserve to live on.

I think releasing The Last of Us part 1 for the third time was a blatant cash grab. Especially when the PS4 remaster already works on PS5. It will sell well, but I'm not buying it again. I think anyone who pays full price for it 3 times is a moron. Sorry. Same with the Uncharted games on PS5. Games you can't play on PS4 I can see the investment.

I think redoing Demon's Souls was a great idea because it never achieved it's full potential on PS3. Sony was smart to redo that one.

I think the idea of the GTA definitive edition was great. The execution was bad and Rockstar should feel bad. These games deserve a new generation of players but not like this.

I was thrilled with Mass Effect Legendary Edition because those games also deserve a new generation of players.

So I guess from a preservation perspective I'm ok with it. From a gimme money perspective not as much.

I have no problem with remakes as long as they're improving on the original title, that just rarely happens is all. The first two REmakes have come the closest to actually doing that but still didn't quite manage it.

I don’t full agree with that, my problem with TLOU and Horizon remakes are that these games still can be played on PS5 but not with Dead Space.
Good point bro, although if you ask I'd have prefered a "remaster collection" rather than a full on remake.

In any case yeah, it may be a bad example since it hasn't come out yet. Maybe they added some new stuff?

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
The Last of Us Part 1? yes
Resident Evil 2/3 Remake & Silent Hill 2? No
Those games are over 20 years old so I'd say it fair or worth Remaking so new and old gamers can experience them in again or for the first time without the distraction of them being dated technologically.

They suck if somehow are Xbox related remakes they fucking rule if they are Playstation related remakes. I mean who gives a fuck about microsoft games nowadays. I mean who wants a remake of an Xbox game.

Yes.

Especially considering that those remakes are just quick, easy money grabs of recent games. Just slap a quick coat of paint and sell it as news to morons.
Nothing against remakes of old games, you know, the ones who actually need it.

FF7 Remake was a rollercoaster and a blast. Replayed Intergrade recently on PS5 and enjoyed it even more the 2nd time round and seeing the world and characters of FF7 on modern hardware. A very special experience.

But yes, TLOU1 and a few others, I agree completely unncessary.

I want a King’s Field 4 remake more than a Bloodborne one, so no…

Also, where are all my Metroid Primes? I only kept my Switch for these games and they are nowhere to be seen. Nintendo has sold remasters of everything except for their best IP.

Yes. Resident Evil remakes lose the fun and challenge of the old control style. Not into it. Not every game needs to be modernized, let them grow old.

Would love to see Quantum Break rereleased at a higher resolution than 320x240.
