People find RPGs to be their favorite type of genre as shown by this poll on this site, but what type of RPG is your favorite exactly? out of all the game genres it's the most varied and has a shitton of options, to the point where it feels like everything is an rpg at times. Just saying RPG is kind of vague, so i thought i'd put up a poll to narrow it down a bit. (you can select 2 btw)

Can't decide, since I love some games on each subgenre but also hate others.

Perhaps my favorite may be the japanese-made western RPG. Things like Dragon's Dogma or even Dragon's Crown (which is basically a beat em up Diablo) are among my favorites, since I love how the japs portray the western medieval fantasy themes. Another similar example of this may be Final Fantasy Tactics.

kind of surprised western RPG is getting so many more votes than japanese, i thought it'd be the opposite :messenger_astonished:
Lot of love for CDProjekt games over here I guess.

If you ask me tho, those are barely RPGs. Their games are wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle, and the same goes for the later Bethesda games, specially Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Not saying they are bad games ofc, I had plenty of fun with most of those games. They just aren't very good when it comes to the actual role-playing side of things.

I love them all!

Only thing I don’t really care for are traditional turn based/RT with pause battle systems (old school FF/DQ or Baldur’s Gate). Turn based is cool in SRPGs though.

I love the options Nioh offered to players.

The first new game playthrough is the classics high stake action and soulslike experience. At higher NG+, it offers more play styles, you can play it as a looter game with good variety of builds and gears and push to even harder contents; or you could just play it as a Musou game and beat the enemy's shits out for giving you hell in previous playthrough.

You know something is wrong when OP splits Wrpgs and Crpg apart, when Wrpgs is a term for when Crpgs started becoming more common on consoles.

Also people thinking having stats means your an rpg, that seems to be something modern gamers have made up that didn't exist decades ago when you had stats in various genres including sports games and no one called them rpgs. But I guess people would consider them to be rpgs now.

Why are Monster Hunter and God of War on there?

And Age of Empires. That's an RTS, not an RPG.

This topic is terrible and OP should feel bad.
look i'd care more but GAF doesn't allow you to edit pre existing poll entries so youre gonna have to live with it

CRPG are the most true to definition rpgs. They usually have the most player choice and build freedom. WRPG is my favorite because they are the most immersive. They have to sacrifice on build freedom and choice to accomplish their scope but I think it’s usually worth it.

WRPGs by a mile. ARPGs are great too, just not what OP has as examples. More like Deus EX HR & MD, AC Odyssey & Origins, HZD & HFW etc.

JRPGs are weeb trash with really bad writing and ridiculous stories, obnoxious combat, horrible dialogue and voice acting, and dumb-looking anime characters. Overall, they just they suck IMO.

Could we consider Heroes of Might & Magic an SRPG? Also, where would you put gsmes like Arx Fatalis or Deus Ex?

Horizon and AC games aren' RPGs. Also, what JRPGs have you played? Not all of those are desu desu senpai kinda stuff you know.

Horizon and the recent ACs are certainly a hell of a lot closer than Monster Hunter and GoW.
WeebRPGs I've played or tried to play: Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, FF15, Tales of Vesperia. Tried to play but couldn't stand them: P5 royale, DQ11, Scarlet Nexus, FF13 and more.

ARPGs (Action Role Playing Games) are games like Path of Exile, Diablo, Chronicon, and Grim Dawn. Not God of War or Monster Hunter.

But I’d say ARPGs are my favorite.

I lean more Western with its darker, and grittier - more D&D approach versus JRPGs and their mostly feminine male characters.

Well if you ask me, neither of those games are RPGs.

Haven't played Lost Odyssey but I heard that one's quite cool! The others are childish or very weeby, that's right. If you ever fancy trying out something different check out DQV (very good story) or the mainline SMT games (specially III, IV and V) which have amazing gameplay. Crystal Project and FF5 are pretty good too.

Whatever genre Divinity Original Sin 2 is. Tactical turn-based CRPG I believe. I mostly play JRPGs for comfort since I grew up with them. Action and turn-based. If something is turn based, I would rather it be turn-based. If not, I massively prefer action.

I like 'em all. Back in the day I didn't notice if it was western or Japanese. Sadly though this topic tends to bring out the worst in being pedantic over genres and definitions thereof. I still think its hilarious that people try to rally against "Japanese" games(role playing or otherwise) with the rest of the world combined. I just step back in awe of the Japanese influence.

Its all a matter of personal preference and taste. Some people think that premade characters and little to no choices or a linear story make it not an rpg. I originally didn't think that. Then in my late teens I went grimdark and western along with my friends. Hated Jrpgs. Then I went back. I don't care what a dev/publisher calls their game. Slight rpg mechanics or super intricate in-depth systems galore. Odds are that with some rpg elements I'm going to enjoy the game more. I don't mind action but love turn based stuff. The two I chose are Jrpg and Srpg.

In the poll options, isnt Western and Computer kind of the same thing?
Seriously, just ignore those categories, they mean nothing.

CRPG was a term used for games that could only be experienced on computer using mouse + keyboard.

Nowadays American and European devs make RPGs meant to be played with controllers mainly, because they release their games on all platforms.

I always thought CRPG stood for Classic RPG :lollipop_tongue:

And quite honestly i think it fits better than Computer RPG, since a term like that won't apply all that well anymore

I voted WRPG. I like some action RPGs as well, although I'm a little foggy on the definition. I've never been able to get into JRPGs or strategy RPGs. I never played a CRPG (although I think of them as WRPG on PCs, before they came to console).
