Are we witnessing the end of consoles?

How can they compete with the popularity growth of the PC gaming juggernaut?

steam.jpg

1) With the last few years and inflation people have less disposable income to buy things like AAA console games or even the console it self. Almost everyone has a computer of some sort as they are needed for work and stuff.

2) Steam is free, has free games and a massive catalog of games that can run on a potato allowing pretty much anyone that wants to game the chance to.

Even IF one day all ps5 games are day one coming to PC ( which is not ). Consoles will not die.

People been talking about the death of a console since the ige age. Please shut up about it. More like STFU to be honest. This goes to all future media articles that think about writing this crap in the future.

When you find a PC built from the ground up and as powerful as a 2070/ 2070s with nvme pcie 4 at least for 400$,. Come and to me. Otherswise please shut the hell up with this crap because I spent almost 200$ on fucking lian LI fans alone . Let alone a whole console.

Console will not go anywhere. If you grew out of it doesn't mean the rest of the world did. And even if you have money soms people like to press one button to start the console and start playing without optimizing and looking at msi after burner frames every 3 seconds.

Consoles will stay and will be the still the primary easy gaming system.

Signed : PC gamer only

What? More people have PCs or laptops compared to gaming consoles I’d imagine. Doesn’t mean all of those have gaming PCs. Could be playing anything on there.
Could be playing anything, but they are playing CS:GO and Dota 2 just like they did every day for the past ten years.

You know that Sony sold 30millon PS5s and has 45.4 million Playstation Plus subscribers.

How the fuck is this an indicator of the end of consoles??

If I were to use your moronic logic then it would be more like pc gaming to be in distress.

They have more subscribers than steam has active users.

The image OP clipped shows concurrent users not active users. Steams currently hosts more than 130 million monthly active users. I always know the conversation is going to be garbage when a post starts with a current user clip.

We just had a thread for 32 million. Do we really need constant updates on this? I mean, I'd get it if they hit 40. But 33 after the last thread is barely 2 days old?

Is that number really that impressive? What % of that are people just online but playing on other platforms, AFK or snoozing? I always have Steam running when I'm on PC but I haven't played shit in months.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
I thought PCMR supposed to be the good guys, and console peasants all they do is console warring?

whats up with this thread?
Since when the growth of one thing means the decline of the other?

The same ratio as when it was 10 mill.. I mean, op's dumb trolling aside, when people say "impressive" they are usually talking about Steam growth as an indicator of platform growth. PC gaming has had a rapid growth the last few years. But Steam is not a PC, just a single storefront, so the absolute numbers for the PC platform is much higher. And remember also that concurrent users is not monthly users, which is much much higher.

Worldwide there's estimated to be about 1.8 billion active PC gamers. Of course, on gaf that's gonna be "gamers", because naturally that's going to include gamers not commonly seen on gaming forums, like people who only play Solitaire on a shitty PC etc. But, again: Growth is the point, and the base is huge.

And for the record: Mobile gaming is even higher with a number around 2.5 billion ;)

In terms of the absolute number of Steam members or online users at any given time, that number can be debated whether it's good or bad.

But one thing that is impressive is number of PC users and online usage increases over time. So as a platform, it consistently grows. When was the last time Steam said usage dropped like a rock because everyone has decided to go mobile or console? Probably never.

Sony, Nintendo, MS user bases go up and down pending how successful their platform of the generation does. And because people have surely trended more to PC, mobile, as well as Switch's hybrid model, the amount on console gear sold has dropped. The peak era was the 360/Wii/PS3/PSP/DS era. So despite gamer count and revenue rising the past 15 years, console hardware is actually down. You'd think hardware would keep rising consistently like PC Steam members, but it fluctuates wildly. Even if you exclude all the portable gear because Switch covers it, the amount of console hardware sold is no better than 15 years ago.

This is low bait quality.

Everyone knows about the stock problems with the PS5, if you didn't know then the only excuse is if you went into coma shortly after the release of PS5 and just woke up checking Gaf as the first thing after your hiatus.

If that's the case, then I'm sorry and take everything back.
That explains the brain damage.

Nope. Playstation is the red bar, Switch orange and Xbox blue.

Got to be the worst colour choices ever seen in gaming charts.
But what Nintendo games are published on PlayStation or Xbox for the Nintendo published games bar to have significant Xbox and playstation percentages?

I misinterpreted your post. I think you just meant the Nintendo bar.

I think what that chart means is how much of each publisher (left margin) has platform gamers spending. So for Nintendo, it's a heavy multi-console kind of platform where gamers own Xbox or PS, but they also buy Nintendo games for Switch too. So those gamers spend a good amount on Nintendo games too.

I might be wrong in my interpretation though, as that Nintendo bar is confusing. But I found the link where it came from with the details.

Figure 2: Chart shows online customer spend on console and PC games by publisher and platform from January 1 - February 28, 2021, according to Edison Trends. The platforms studied are Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and PC. The publishers studied are Ubisoft, Nintendo, Activision, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Take-Two Interactive, Ultimate Games, Aquaplus, Sokpop Collective, and ShriaVN. Note: the highest total spend per publisher was set to 100, and all other values scaled accordingly. This analysis is based on over 200,000 transactions, and includes full game, currency and add-on purchases from Sony (PS Store), Microsoft (Xbox Live and Microsoft store), Nintendo (Nintendo Store) as well as digital sales from retail stores (e.g. Best Buy, Walmart).

PC attach rate still abysmal

gaming-publisher-sales-chart-4.jpg
That's not technically attach rate. Anyway, this chart might make sense if you want to map and indicate the console market with its front loaded top of the pops charts which is dominated by big publishers. But it makes less sense when describing the general pc market which by nature is a completely different beast with its 1.8 billion hyper-diversified user market. Even Steam charts will often be able to give a few hints in that regard.

That's actually a really weak number considering many users are once in a blue moon or an old 2d game. I'm considered a user even though I barely touch pc games.
The console space as a group destroys this.

Serious question do consoles ever give out numbers like this? I would really like to know how many people per day on average play Xbox or Playstation.

A lot actually.
Xbox did in the past and the ratio was roughly 20:1.

Apply that ratio to the total PS5 sales and we get about 1.5m concurrent users which is absolutely pathetic in comparison.

Let's just say people are more often online these days so let's double or even triple that 1.5m and it is still a pathetic number compared to Steam which is just one of the many platforms that PC gamers use.

Most people are too dumb to grasp the enormity of the numbers that Steam puts out year after year.

end of consoles? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

if you play any sort of games on a pc, you have steam.

its always as much of a monopoly as xbox live and psn are on their own platforms.

Yeah the OP was dumb but no need to compound it.

Not sure the exact number but a lot. The PC has many more exclusive games over console.

Boys im speaking per year…. A lot of exclusives? Bc i never hear of many of them. And im speaking about exclusives on the level of Playstation and nintendo
