Insider Gaming: Sony’s next Playstation Handheld (not a cloud-streaming device)

This is more of a PS5 accessory than a handheld. They could even call it a controller...

being that the Dualsense Edge cost $200. I expect the Dualsense Go (yes that's what I am calling it) to cost about the same.

And if sony is smart, they would not market this as anything other than a dualsense controller with a built-in screen for remote pay if you want it.

If this is true it’ll be very sad to see Sony finally try making a handheld again only to fail miserably yet again..

I’d love another serious attempt, but if Vita wasn’t the death sentence for their handheld gaming systems this will be for sure.

It seems like a luxury thing, streaming PS5 games, not something for the everyman.

The big issue here is games. They are not gonna make handheld games, they are dependent on streaming.

The Switch games work seamlessly across handheld and TV, it's not something Sony or Xbox can recreate, you just can't use the PS5 version of Ragnarok on some handheld unless it's a super expensive monster.

To make a Vita sort of handheld is too extreme, they are never gonna start up handheld studios to support it. It's just not possible to make a PSP sort of thing these days that sits next to their consoles, it's too expensive to manufacture.

The Steam Deck is in a unique position, Valve is losing a lot of money per sale because it's so powerful, but they got the Steam store and PC support to earn from. A Sony handheld would need games, which makes it impossible unless they are gonna make something like a PS4 handheld. Even then, converting and selling PS4 as handheld games would not work, people won't buy a handheld to play old games.

I'd rather use a 10 inch android device and Dualsense than this thing. Do not see the target audience..?

Sony should just make a handheld of there last console at the end of its life, its final phase, so a portable ps4 that could stream ps5 games then a portable ps5 that could stream ps6 games. We get so many cross gen games nowadays that it actually makes more sense then ever and would be supported for years after the newest console comes out without the need to worry about putting devs time and cash into it.

Sony should stick to their consoles, they're failing pretty damn hard when it comes to additional hardware and this will be no different.
It seems every generation there's some "thing" that needs to be done other than dedicating all time and effort to the core console experience - the only thing that seems to last in the long term. With the PS3, it was Move. With PS4 it was VR. Now, it's VR and cloud streaming.

To me at least, these are distractions. Sometimes they can have indirect benefits, but they're distractions nonetheless.

If it plays PS5/PS4 games downscaled, like steamdeck ans Switch with 3rd party games, than day one.
If remote play/cloud only for PS5,then no
Wont happen. Sony made the smart play of having only one hardware spec for this gen. One cross gen is gone and buried under cement, the ps5 is all anyone who wants to make a playstation game will target.

Sony can do easily on AMD phoenix make portable. 720p should be enough to play games from PS5, but seems we are going get this cloud sh*t...

This isn't something worth getting annoyed at, but people will get annoyed because of how little we know about Sony's forthcoming games. And that's Sony's fault.

Sony bringing back the Wii U dual screen mechanic.

#SonyAlwaysWins.

I'm actually really interested in this. I never thought Sony would make another handheld and I'm far from convinced that they should. However, I have enough disposable income that was would gladly buy one.

Nah it's people's fault. When Sony and Microsoft showed games far in advance everyone bitched and now that they don't show games 2-3 years out people still bitch.

Maybe a mixture of both then? Sony and Microsoft mightve been feeding the hype beast because that's what people wanted, but no one was forcing them to.

PlayStation and Microsoft totally would prefer to be showing games far out even now, but both are holding back for obvious reasons.

I don't know if this is true, but the idea is so fucking dumb. A handheld that doesn't allow local play is useless for most people. If I'm in my house, I'm lounging on my sofa playing on a 4K TV. If I'm out, I'm surrounded by shitty public open networks.

Also, Sony has Xperia phones that are more than capable of streaming games at high res/high refresh rate, why waste money on this?

Always online looks like a super smart move. You are in the train and suddenly lose connection : the game stops. You are in vacation in the countryside or whatever and connection is super bad : the game stops. Looks definitely like the kind of user experience you want with a handheld.

Makes sense cloud streaming is still hit and miss for alot of people. Sony prob also doesn't have the cloud infrastructure to support cloud streaming on a larger level. So local wifi streaming would be ideal for them. This is prob the reason they put wifi 6 in ps5 and not use it for psvr 2. Create a wifi 6 local streaming device that runs off the ps5.

Without knowing the price and the capabilities of this accessory, it's impossibile to judge...

As this REQUIRES a PS5 console, I expect the price to be very competitive from Sony. It's not a stand-alone device

Tom Henderson asserting his dominance over Jeff Grubb if this turns out to be true. How embarrassing for Grubb.

I didnt read shit. but here is an idea for Sony/MS:

using GamePass/PS++ as the selling point for a handheld just for Indies. (reduces cost of the hardware and keeps expectations in check)

sony always was obsessed to make a "console experience on the go" offering AAA kind of games for the PSP. I think thay idea is wrong/dumb.

Indies is the way to go.

EDIT: and you could even call it: The Indie Station🤣

Look at all the naysayers.. You should look at it from a different angle. I mean, if this is 40 dollars it might survive a couple of months.

I mean it can't be more than 100 dollars as a pure PS5 "client"...

And the fact that it has an LCD screen tells me that Sony is launching it targeting very aggressive pricing....

i would love another real handheld from Sony

I was so stoked to read this, and then I was so colossally let down. I get that they want to sell a handheld without cutting into PlayStation 5 console sales, but the way that it appears they are going about this is ridiculous. An always online handheld that requires you to own a PlayStation 5 to use it? Why make something portable with the restriction that you always have to be on the internet in order to use it? And why are you expecting gamers to buy two pieces of hardware (one that is expensive, and the other that is likely expensive - although we don't know the price yet) to play games on the go... or on the toilet? Am I expected to use my phone's hotspot to play this when I'm traveling for a trip? Can I just not use it if I'm flying? This insider reveal really bummed me out.

Granted, this isn't coming directly from Sony. Being an insider reveal, it's possible that the announced product will be different. I'm not holding out a lot of hope for that (because I don't want to be crushed), but this is still a "take it with a grain of salt" announcement.

Its competitors don't do PS5 quality graphics. Also we have no idea what this thing is yet. Next theory?

I don't think the accessory described does PS5 graphics either.

Remote play for the PSP/Vita is a cool bonus feature that extended the usefulness of Sony's handhelds. A dedicated screen which can only do remote play sounds pointless now that remote play can be accessed on other devices. Why would I spend any amount of money on a remote play peripheral when I can buy a cheap tablet that has multiple uses? There has to be more to this leak.

I mean a cheap tablet is not really comparable to a dedicated device that has a Dual Sense controller integrated....

There has to be some sort of additional hook to this. Well, let’s see. Not about to write it off yet. A great screen screen with solid audio is key though.

So from my understanding this will only have the remote play app and nothing else!? Can't even stream PS Premium games!? Is this a late April Fool's joke?
If it is, it will be a big L for Sony. This after the VR sales disaster.

All I saw is "coming before the PS5 Pro" and I'm honestly annoyed by this "Pro" crap. I KNOW that if they actually do create a PS5 Pro, I won't be able to resist getting it, and it's not about being able to afford it, it's about hating this whole mid-gen refresh baloney. Slims are fine, mid-gen upgrades are just......annoying. The whole reason I went back to consoles from PC for gaming is to avoid the constant upgrades.

As for the rumors of a new handheld......I have no use for them anymore. I have a PSP, a Vita and an old Nintendo DS, and they collect dust in a drawer. I'm not sure whether to say I've outgrown handhelds or just never encounter the conditions required to need one, or both, but I just never touch them.

So its just a remote play handheld. Will it make remote play better than the regular remote play that is on my phone attached to the PS5 controller is the question. If so, i would buy this day 1 because i been trophy hunting lately and its very convenience hunting for hours after 10pm in bed.

Also, it has to be very light because my phone attached to the PS5 controller is slightly heavy.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
This is what the showcase will be about.
PC ports Announcements & This....
Seems to be par for course with Sony at the moment.
Throwing expensive accessories & hardware at us while actual game development for the past 3 years is dedicated to PC ports.

"Look! PC ports!
What about PS5 owners you say?
Well...umm we got no new games to announce but we haven't forgot you, how about this new expensive useless PS5 accessory to fund those ports!"
