Xbox players are greeted with a full-screen pop-up ad for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III when they boot up their Xbox console

Thats Advertising for you. You don't see adverts for blow jobs do you?

Nobody wants to see a foot fungus ad. But some need the medication.

That's how I learned that little green people live underneath your toe nail.

Edit: It's actually an ad about nail infections. Don't know if that makes it better though.

Drama queens everywhere!

Cancel out, move on. If you have toddlers/kids around and can’t be bothered to store your controllers out of reach, password protect your purchases.

(I do agree it should be on the close button by default)

This is just the beginning. Remember when we only had one ad that we can skip with Youtube? Next it will play a video you can skip after 5 second, then it will be multiple videos, then a full video and multiple ads you can skip after 4 seconds. I hope Playstation never do this.

Just received the greeting when booting up my Xbox. I feel honored and pleased that MS are taking the time to remind me that a big game is about to be released. I am not too fond of CoD, so I might have forgotten about it otherwise.

This is a Nothingburger, medium rare, with no side of fries.

Just say no thanks unless you want to but it.
'They do this because people like you don't push back. I say this about a number of topics. Just because you say "meh" well they will push harder. Ads in game next. Ads between games. Anything for a buck.

Also this isn't what people signed up for. You should go right to your menu when signing in or powering on. This wouldn't fly on pc but xbox people ride Phil's dick so much they think they can do it. Just look at all the ball grease they were guzzling hoping for them to spend billions on nothing but taking a publisher away from others.

Also this defaults to buy. It would be simple for a kid to accidentally hit x 3 time and buy it because they aren't reading as kids on xbox don't read. Then it hits the stored credit card and bam, you have a game you didn't want.
But really, people need to say no to this shit.

If we don't allow MS to put pop-up ads in their console UI, how else are they going to compete with Sony?

This is Microsoft flexing and making a statement that they now have the most important IP. This pop-up ad is actually the most exciting piece of content seen on an XBOX fans screen in 2023. Just another sign that the acquisitions are real and show that GamePass is becoming the industry.

I guess since they can't print it on the console box they're settling for taking over your dashboard.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Next year, baybay. This is probably all they can do legally/contractually this year, since it's still got marketing rights for PS4/5.

If you have fungus go to the doctor, trust me the shit they try and sell you doesn't work.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
They also should advertise during gameplay, imagine how awsome that would be. Can’t wait!!!

Boy, you're in luck, because that's what MS is currently investigating!

Since its launch in 2017, Microsoft has convinced over 25 million people to pay a monthly subscription fee to access a substantial library of Xbox Game Pass titles. For those not as interested in a monthly subscription, though, Microsoft is now floating a potential model where players could view an ad in exchange for a short period of game time.

The nod toward potential ad-supported game time comes from Xbox Corporate VP for Game Creator Experience and Ecosystem Sarah Bond, who told Rolling Stone UK that she's constantly looking to "introduce more business model diversity" for game developers.

"We’ve talked about how we’re experimenting with other models, like what does it mean for advertising in games which is more prevalent in mobile—are there models of that that work well in PC and console?" Bond said. "Are there other models where you might have timed slices of games and stuff like that?"

Bond's tease comes a few months after some Game Pass players noticed a Spanish-language survey gauging their interest in a cheaper Game Pass tier that included "advertisements before the game" (reminiscent of Netflix's recent ad-supported tier rollout). And Insider reported last year that Microsoft was working with ad agencies to "let advertisers place ads inside free-to-play Xbox games" (expanding on the current practice of ads running on the Xbox dashboard).

Microsoft's signaled interest in attaching ads to games isn't new; the company bought in-game ad network Massive in 2006 before shutting it down in 2010. That effort was part of a rising wave of in-game ad interest that crested during the early years of the millennium.

Nothing screams “pro consumer” like shoving MW3 down everyone s throat.

Is this age restricted?

Really ... That is a really bad idea. Especially as the "buy" button is highlighted directly.
Really a dick move. Who at Microsoft thought that this would be a good idea?

Mandatory Singstar in the PS3 dashboard paved the way for all of this modern shit.

That's why playing offline is better. Why connect my console if it is only to have ads displayed everywhere ? The dashboard is cleaner when offline.

I'll train my dog to shit in front of your house, about 3 meters away from the entrace to your front yard. It's a total nothingburger so you'll be fine with it. Two weeks later, I'm gonna let it shit in your front yard, but somewhere far away from your way to the front door so it'll be a total nothingburger, too. Another two weeks after it's gonna shit next to your door - still a nothingburger, you can just ignore it since shit doesn't lie exactly in the way you usually take in and out of your house. Add another two weeks and shit's smeared all over your doorknob. I guess that's still a nothingburger lol, you can just use a papertowel to protect your hands when you want to get into your house. I can only imagine at what point nothingburgers stop being nothingburgers to you, maybe when the dog shits in your bed?

That's complete garbage. Fuck that.

I was just coming around to dealing with this shitty UI change they did for the system. Ads like this are completely out of line. I don't care if you do that shit to casual gamers that don't know up from down, but there must be an opt out or I will be pissed. Same shit on my fucking Vizio TV now too.

The default option is buy now? So a fucking toddler can turn your console on and just hit A 3x and blow $100.

You're correct 100%. This type of behavior by companies should be pretty much illegal. Once you pay for your console or really any sort of product, you should be able to enjoy it without these predatory tactics.

Samsung does the same thing with their TVs so I keep them offline and use third party devices for streaming purposes. On consoles this is worse because usually we have payment methods attached to our accounts.

To be fair, upon launch on steam you do get a popup of a bunch of ads for discounted games or new games
You don't on Steam OS. On steam the computer application it would be pretty much expected since its a storefront. You can launch steam games without launching the store iirc.
